Character Profile: Jade: Jade is a 17 year old girl who lives at home with her mum and Millie her sister. Jade is hiding the secret from her family and friends that she’s a lesbian, but she finally builds up the courage to tell her mum. How will her family take it as they currently believe that she’s a typical teenager girl who loves dressing up and wearing make-up? Applying to my characters to the theory of Erving Goffman’s theory, Jade would be seen as the protagonist also known as the leading character as throughout the short film the narrative based upon her. Millie: Millie is a 19 year old girl who lives at home with her mum and her younger sister Jade. Millie is a confident and popular student at university who socialises well with her friends at university but struggles to cope with the distance between her and her boyfriend. Will the distance between her and her boyfriend become too much along with the events happening at home? Although Millie does play a vital role in the storyline, the narrative isn’t based around her and therefore Millie would be seen as the ‘deuteragonist’ also known as the secondary character. Carol: Carol is a single mum of her two daughters Jade and Millie. Carol owns her own bakery shop, and is happily single, but nobody quite understands why she her last relationship ended and why she refuses to have another one. What does her letter to Jade reveal and how will it affect the rest Jade’s live? According to Erving Goffman’s theory, Carol is also seen as the ‘deuteragonist’ (secondary character), although Carol is only seen in one scene of the short film, she still plays a major role in the narrative. Cara: Cara is a 17 year old girl who has revealed to family and friends that she’s a lesbian, but what people don’t know is that Jade and Cara have been secretly dating for the past few months. However, Cara no longer wants to keep it a secret and reveals to Jade that she cannot continue and will end their relationship unless Jade can build up to courage to reveal her big secret. Cara is also seen as the ‘deuteragonist’ character in the eyes of Erving Goffman’s theory, Cara is seen in a few scenes but plays a major role in the reason to why Jade writes the letter to her mum revealing her secret and therefore is seen as the secondary character.

Family Liaison Officer: The family liaison officer is only seen in one scene in the short film, and he is the person who has to reveal to Jade that her mum has died in a car crash. Due to the family liaison officer playing a small role, he is seen as the ‘bit player’ in Erving Goffman’s theory. He is seen as the ‘bit player’ due the minor role in the narrative and the background of the character isn’t revealed to the audience and therefore have a very basic knowledge of him.
