• Substance Abuse – Any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for nonmedical purposes
• Synthetic Drugs – Chemical substance produced artificially in a lab

• Tolerance – how much your body can handle – The more drugs you do the higher the
tolerance– High tolerance results in use of more drugs

• Why people use: – Stay awake (truck drivers) – lose weight– improve athletic performance
• Can produce a temporary high
• Always result in a “crash” or exhaustion
• User will develop a psychological dependence

Methamphetamine
• Made in labs and therefore readily available
• Can be swallowed, injected, or snorted
• Increased activity and loss of appetite
• Caues addiction, anxiety

• White powder
• Rapid acting and highly addictive substance
• Effects:– Weight loss – Destruction of the nasal cavities physiological

• Cause a sedative effect

Codeine
• Intended for short term pain relief
• Can impair driving and other motor/perception function
• Highly addictive
• Effects: lightheadedness, nausea, shortness of breath and sedation
• Mental and physical addiction can occur if used for a long time

Heroin
• Injected, smoked or snorted
• Addiction and tolerance develops. – More and more of the drug is needed
• Collapsed veins, abscesses, infections in the heart, and liver disease
• Withdrawal occurs after only a few hours– Person will crave the drug and feel restless
