Ramblings From Your Editor

We had a great time at our Chapter W picnic

As you can see from the smiling faces of those who attended a great time was had by all. We had great food and great company. The hots and hamburgs were handled by chef Rick. Beans, salads and other goodies, included some fabulous deserts rounded out the menu.

Featured Chapter W Member: Dewey VanNort

This month’s featured chapter member, Dewey VanNort, is a man of many experiences, talents, and interest. He was born in October 1940, in the town of Ilion, NY. He was the middle of five children, an older sister and brother and two younger brothers. His parents owned a small dairy farm, and his father also work in a factory in Utica, NY.

Family dynamics played a major role in shaping Dewey’s future life. He was his mother’s favorite child; she always defended and aided him, giving him her unconditional love. On the other

hand, his father’s response was always anger, resentment, and physical abuse. No matter what happened on the farm, Dewey’s father blamed him and would beat him.

Dewey recalls a time that the children got the scythe from the barn loft to cut some hay. The scythe was not put back where it belonged. When their dad came home from his work in the factory and found the scythe, he lined up all five children and began to go down the line to see who had used it and not put it back. He questioned the sister and hit her; Dewey spoke up and took the blame to protect his sister. This got him another beating. These beatings were so bad that the neighbors called the police to investigate.

His older brother enlisted in the Marine Corp when he was 16, with his parent’s approval. Dewey was present and tried to enlist, but he was only 14 years old, and was rejected. The strife between his father and him escalated until his father took him before a judge to be placed in a reform school. The judge, wanting him to finish school, placed him through social services, in a foster home, in Edmeston, NY. Jim and Jackie Mayne, also farmers, took this young 14 year old and treated him like their family. After three months, he was no longer eligible for social service placement and was to be moved. Since he wanted to stay with the Maynes, they offered to pay him $5.00 weekly, and he would go to school and work on the farm when not in school. He stayed with them until he graduated from high school, in January 1959. Jim and Jackie are both living today, and Dewey visits them when he can.

In February 1959, Dewey joined the Marine Corp and headed to Paris Island for his training. Upon completion of Boot Camp, he was sent to North Africa where he served for 19 months on a Naval Communication site, in French Morocco. He has fond memories of visiting many surrounding countries during his stay there.

In December 1960, Dewey lost the one person who loved him unconditionally, his Mother. She died of cancer, on December 22, 1960. He came home for the funeral on a 30 day leave, which put him out of rotation with his unit. Not knowing what to do with him, his superiors sent him to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, as part of an artillery unit. They put him to work for a short period of time as a mail orderly, before moving him to Norfolk, VA. He remained at this base, serving as the driver for the Company Commander, until he was discharged on February 2 1963.

Returning to Utica, NY, he rented his own place and worked two jobs in two different factories, to make ends meet. He did this for eleven months before moving to Rochester, NY, where he was told there were plenty of good jobs that paid well. Upon arriving in town, not knowing anyone or the area, he went into a café on Stillson Street. He was sitting at the end of the counter when the cook came out, looked around, walked to him and asked, “What’s wrong young man?” Stunned, Dewey replied that nothing was wrong, but at the cook’s insistence told him he was new in town, looking for

a job and a place to live. The cook returned to work, and a short time later returned with a paper with a list of places where he could apply for a job.

Dewey rented a tiny, closet size room, in a house at 1328 East Main St, for the grand sum of $8.00 a week. He quickly made application at the Rochester big five, Bausch and Lomb, Kodak, Xerox, Delco, and Gleason Works. Bausch and Lomb hired him to work on the assembly line, assembling microscopes for schools. After a week’s work, he eagerly returned to Utica to see a special girl.

He had started dating the love of his life, Margery, while he was still in the military. They had a long distance romance until he returned home. They dated for four years before they married in August of 1965, with the wedding at her parent’s house. They rented a three bedroom house on Tarrington Street, in Rochester, for $135.00 a month, plus utilities. (This house recently sold for $82,000.) They had one daughter, Christine, who currently lives in Arizona. She has blessed Dewey with three grandsons and one granddaughter.

After five years of marriage, Margery and Dewey divorced and Margery and Christine moved back to Utica. Dewey purchased the house in which he currently lives. He remained single for two years before marrying Sandra. They were married for seven years, and gave birth to one son Daniel. Daniel lives in Rochester and has blessed Dewey with two grandsons.

Sandra had a daughter that Dewey adopted, Vicki, who lives in California. She blessed Dewey with three granddaughters, of which only one is living. One teenage granddaughter was walking down the side of the road and stepped out in front of a moving car and was killed. The other died from an asthma attack at age 21.

After divorcing Sandra, Dewey never remarried. Always being in love with Margery, Dewey reconnected with her. Since she prefers not to live in Rochester, Dewey drives to Utica every weekend to be with her.

Dewey worked one year at Bausch and Lomb before working three years on the assembly line at Xerox. He made good money at this job because he was fast and got paid by the piece. Even with a job that provided well for his family, Dewey was not content because he always wanted to be a State Trooper. While in his last year in the military, he took the trooper exam and passed it, but could not get leave time to take the physical. While renting the house on Tarrrington Street, their landlord, a city motorcycle policeman, encouraged him to take the exam for the Rochester city policeman. Instead, he took the exam for the State Troopers and the City Policeman. He failed the Trooper exam ( made 74.25 and had to get 75 to pass) and passed the City Policeman exam. On June 26, 1967, he started on his path as a Rochester City Policeman, where he served for the next 26 years.

One can imagine the experiences that Dewey has had as a Rochester City Policeman. The following is his response to questions about his experience.

1. What is the best thing about police work? Helping people2. What is the worst thing about police work? Not being backed up by the higher-up

bosses.3. What is an unexpected arrest you made? A woman robbed a bank on East Ridge

Road. Her description went out for her arrest. The lady went into Harry’s Hots to eat. Dewey parked his motorcycle and entered the café to eat. He saw the lady sitting in a booth, called the police who surrounded the place and arrested her.

4. What is a funny situation you remember that led to an arrest? Dewey was on

patrol in the afternoon. He was on St. Paul Street where there is no parking between 4-6 PM. A man was sitting in his car; Dewey pulled in behind him and waved him to move on. The man did not respond. Dewey blows his horn and waves the man to move on; no response. Dewey pulled up beside him, gets out and puts a parking ticket on his windshield. He later learned that the man’s partner was in Ralph’s Café robbing the place. Two or three days later, his superiors contacted him about giving a parking ticket that day around the time the place was robbed. Dewey checked his copy of the ticket, gave them the license plate number of the car, and the robbers were arrested.

Dewey’s first motorcycle was a 1966 Harley Davidson FL police bike. He purchased it in Rome, NY, for $1000.00. Margery was not for him getting the motorcycle, but once he had added a sidecar, she and Christine would ride with him. Margery rode with him when Wing Ding was last held in Billing Mt. They had a wonderful, fun trip.

Dewey’s passion for bikes expresses itself in the number he has owned.1966 bought a Harley Davidson; has owned 11;1972 bought a Moto Guzzi; has owned 7;1975 bought a BMW; has owned 3;1986 bought a Gold Wing; has owned 3.

Dewey says his favorite bike is the Moto Guzzi because it is simple and dependable.

Dewey is one of the original members of the Chapter W Gold Wing Club. He rode with Billy Kleisle and Charlie Fedeli when they were members of Chapter E, and moved with them when they formed Chapter W. Presently, Dewey is experiencing health problems, but still enjoys riding his motorcycle and fellowshipping with fellow bikers. Dewey has a remarkable memory of dates, events and facts. If you want a pleasant evening, have him over and enjoy unlimited stories of his life experiences. You will soon learn that underneath Dewey’s gruff exterior beats a heart of love and kindness.

Told to Nancy MotleyMembership Enhancement Coordinator

I have heard some members saying that they are having a hard time checking their tire pressures and doing routine maintenance on their bikes. I’m willing to help you with small things on your bike for the nominal fee of participation in chapter events.

I will help you to maintain your bike if you are active in the chapter. This offer does not mean major mechanical repairs. This offer means checking tire pressures, inspecting brakes and similar things. I do not want to compete with the dealerships and the key idea is help you with the maintenance.

If anyone wants to take me up on this offer please talk to me at one of the chapter events or give me a call at 585 967 0876.
