Q4 Give an example to show that physical and chemical changes can occur together. Ans – burning of candle is both physical and chemical change . burning of candle melts the wax and hence physical state of wax has changed from solid to liquid . again the wax combines with atmospheric oxygen and change to carbon dioxide, heat and light thus both the changes are accompanied in the burning of candle.

Chapter 5 Give reasons:

1. Carbon dioxide gas is used in fire extinguisher. Ans – CO2 is used in fire extinguishers because it is non-combustible and it displaces the oxygen that is necessary for burning.

2.Nitrogen gas is used in packaging of food. Ans- nitrogen is an efficient , cost effective way to displace oxygen and moisture . Ntrogen reduces the oxygen content in the food packaging and to avoid product deterioration. 3 we should breathe in through our nose and not through our mouth. Ans – nose is lined with tiny hair which act as a strainer and prevent dust entering the lungs. Besides that, breathing through your mouth can cause dry mouth, dry lips and dry throat. Answer in short: Q1. How will you show that oxygen is required for burning?

Page 22: Chapter 7 The Emperor’s New Clothes · What makes Beowulf a true hero? Apart from the fact he rid the land of Grendel and his mother, Beowulf was a true hero because he was fearless

Ans – light a candle and place it on a table with a glass tumbler over it. You will see the flame becomes smaller and smaller and finally goes out. The candle is not getting oxygen from any source. This shows that oxygen is required for burning. 2 How is the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide maintained in the nature? Ans. The balance of oxygen and CO2 is maintained in the nature by the oxygen released by the plants during photosynthesis and CO2 released by humans, animals etc in the nature. 3 what are the condition required for rusting? Ans. The important conditions for rusting are

a. Presence of air b. Presence of moisture. 4 Why drops of water are seen on the outer surface of the glass containing chilled water? Ans . because there is moisture around us and when we place a glass containing ice-cold water, the vapour cools down and forms a thin layer of water or water droplets on the surface of the glass. 5 Do you think that planting more trees reduce pollution of air ? give reason. Ans . plants are useful to reduce air pollution. Planting trees will help to prevent global warming. They reduce the amount of CO2 in the air and replenishing the oxygen in the atmosphere. Answer in detail.

Q1. Why is percentage of carbon dioxide more in exhaled air than in exhaled air? How do we test the increase in percentage of carbon dioxide in exhaled air? Ans. There is more CO2 when we breathe out because CO2 is an end -product of the metabolism in human. Sugar, fat and amino acid are broken down to produce energy for the body and CO2 is an unwanted by-product which is returned to lungs and exhaled.

Q 2 . what is photosynthesis ? Name the gas absorbed during photosynthesis. Also name a gas released as a result of photosynthesis. Ans. Green plants use CO2 from the air, water from the soil and light from the sun to make their own food in the form of sugar or starch. this process is called photosynthesis. 6CO2 +6H2O → C6 H12 O6 + 6O2

During photosynthesis plants absorb carbon dioxide and emit oxygen gas. Q 3. How will you prove that oxygen constitutes one-fifth of air ? Ans . To show that oxygen occupies one- fifth of air by volume. We shall do this experiment. Fill a trough with water . take a lighted candle and place it carefully at the centre of the trough . now take a glass tumbler and use a marker pen to mark five equal portion on the tumbler. Invert this tumbler over the burning candle you will see that the candle burns for some time and then extinguished. The water rises from the edge of the inverted tumbler to occupy about one-fifth of it. So we can say that oxygen constitute one-fifth of air. Q4 . What are the similarities and differences between combustion and respiration? Ans - Similarities between combustion and respiration- Both of them: 1- Release energy 2- Use oxygen 3- Produce oxides Differences-

1- Combustion is fast process. Respiration is slower than combustion.

2- Combustion may be internal or external. Respiration is always internal.

Chapter 2 MEASUREMENT - I

Short answer type questions 1.) What is measurement ?

The comparison of an unknown quantity with a known fixed quantity of same kind is called measurement.

2.) Define length. Name instruments used to measure it. Length is the distance between any points or places. The most common instruments used to measure length are the metre scale, measuring tapes and ruler.

3.) Name a multiple and a sub multiple of metre and state their relation with metre.

Kilometer is a multiple of metre and centimeter is a sub multiple of metre. 1 kilometre = 1000 m 1 centimetre = 0.01 m

4.) What do you understand by area ? State its SI unit. The amount of substance covered by an object or place is called area. Its SI unit is metre square (m2).

5.) What is volume ? Give its SI unit. The space covered by a substance (solid, liquid, gas) is called its volume. The SI unit of volume is cubic metre (m3).

6.) Name four kinds of apparatus used for measuring the volume of liquids in the laboratory.

Measuring cylinders, measuring flasks, pipettes, burettes etc. are used for measuring the volume of liquids in the laboratory.

7.) State two devices used to measure mass. Beam balance and physical balance are the two devices used to measure mass.

Page 28: Chapter 7 The Emperor’s New Clothes · What makes Beowulf a true hero? Apart from the fact he rid the land of Grendel and his mother, Beowulf was a true hero because he was fearless

Long answer type questions 1.) What are standard units ? What is the need for standard units of measurement ?

A standard unit is a unit which always has the same measure for everyone. If there is no standard unit it becomes difficult and boring to communicate and compare with others that use different units.

2.) List the precautions to be taken while measuring the length of a wooden block using a meter scale. i.) Always place the object is to be measured on a flat surface ii.) Always place the ruler along the length of the object to be measured.

Iii.) Keep your eye vertically above the point from where you have to measure. iv.) If the ruler is broken, take the measurement of the object from either one cm or any other convenient mark on the ruler.

3.) Describe an activity to find the area of a rose petal. Place the rose petal on the square centimeter paper and draw its outline. Now count the number of complete or almost complete squares within the outline. Add both the numbers. This gives the approximate area of the leaf in square centemetres (cm2).

4.) How would you measure the volume of an irregular solid which is insoluble in water, using a measuring cylinder ?

Pour suitable quantity of water in the measuring cylinder. Note the reading of water level, say R1. Tie the given solid to a thread and immerse it completely into the water. You will observe that the level of water rises. Note the new reading of water level, say R2. The difference between R2 and R1 will give you the volume of the given solid.

Challenge Questions 1.) Earlier people used body parts to measure length. Why is this not an accurate way of taking measurements ?

Page 29: Chapter 7 The Emperor’s New Clothes · What makes Beowulf a true hero? Apart from the fact he rid the land of Grendel and his mother, Beowulf was a true hero because he was fearless

The lengths of various parts of the human body differ from person to person so the measurements won’t be accurate.

2.) Why do we need multiples and submultiples of fundamental units ? In SI system, some units are not convenient to measure certain quantities. Hence multiples and submultiples of fundamental units are used in measurements

3.) Why do jewelers use a physical balance instead of a common beam balance to measure the mass of gold ?

Jewelers use a physical balance instead of a common beam balance to measure the mass of gold because physical balance is much more sensitive and accurate than a beam balance.

Chapter 3 Measurement II

Short answer type questions 1. What is the SI unit of time? How is it related to a mean solar day?

The SI unit of time is second. 1mean solar day= 24hours= 24* 3600 = 86400seconds

2. Explain the difference between a 24 hr clock and a 12 hr clock In a 12 hr clock time limit is from 12am to 11pm .Am and Pm are used to identify time. In a 24 hr clock time limit is from 00 to 24. Am and Pm are not used in it. It avoids confusion in identifying time.

3. What is temperature? State its SI unit Temperature is the degree of hotness or coldness of a body. SI unit of temperature is Kelvin.

4. Explain the purpose of a constriction in a clinical thermometer. A slight bend or kink in the capillary tube of a clinical thermometer is called a constriction. It prevents the mercury level in the stem from dropping even after the thermometer is taken out of the patient’s mouth.

Page 30: Chapter 7 The Emperor’s New Clothes · What makes Beowulf a true hero? Apart from the fact he rid the land of Grendel and his mother, Beowulf was a true hero because he was fearless

5. How can you check if a meter scale is accurate?

A correct meter scale has arrow marks on both ends. A meter scale with arrows missing from one or both end is likely to be incorrect.

Long answer questions 1. What is the difference between a laboratory thermometer and

a clinical thermometer? The thermometer used to measure the room temperature or the temperature of hot solids and liquids in a laboratory is called the laboratory thermometer. The stem of the laboratory thermometer has graduations usually marked in degrees from -10 to 110 degree Celsius. The thermometer used by doctors to measure a person’s body temperature is called a clinical thermometer. The capillary tube of a clinical thermometer has a slight bend called constriction.

2. Draw a labeled sketch of a thermometer and mark on it the boiling point of water , melting point of ice and normal human body temperature. [Fig 3.8. Page 32]

3. What do you understand by upper fixed point and lower fixed point of temperatures? State the two fixed points in different scales. The lower fixed point is the temperature at which pure ice melts. This is known as the melting point of ice. The upper fixed point or boiling point is the temperature at which pure water boils. [Draw table 3.3. Page 30]

4. Explain how you will record the body temperature of a patient.

Page 31: Chapter 7 The Emperor’s New Clothes · What makes Beowulf a true hero? Apart from the fact he rid the land of Grendel and his mother, Beowulf was a true hero because he was fearless

Take a clinical thermometer and check the position of mercury in the stem. Give the thermometer a few jerks firmly so that the mercury falls below the constriction into the bulb. Wash the bulb of the thermometer in running water. The place the bulb gently below the tongue of the person. Let the thermometer remain there for a minute. Take out the thermometer and carefully note the reading of the mercury level in its stem. This gives the body temperature of the person.

5. Explain how the department of weights and measures , govt. of India, helps people? The department ensures that we buy the correct measure corresponding to the amount we pay for an article. The department ensures the both sides of a meter scale has arrow marks. The department puts its stamp on both sides of the central axis of a beam balance and ensures no manipulations are made on it. The lead in the hole of standard weights is stamped by the department to ensure the correctness of weight.

CHAPTER 4 FORCE

Long answer type questions 1. State and explain any four effects of force on an object.

Force produces motion in a stationary object. When you pedal a bicycle, you exert force on its pedal and it starts moving. Force can stop a moving object A cricket ball is stopped by a player by applying a force in the direction opposite to the direction of motion of the ball. Force can change the speed of a moving object

Page 32: Chapter 7 The Emperor’s New Clothes · What makes Beowulf a true hero? Apart from the fact he rid the land of Grendel and his mother, Beowulf was a true hero because he was fearless

If someone gives the swing a push in the direction in which it is moving, it will move faster. Force can change the direction of a moving object If you apply a force on a football by using your foot, the direction of the football changes.

2. Explain gravitational force with an example. Every object in the universe attracts another object with a force called gravitational force. The gravitational force between the sun and the earth helps the earth to revolve around the sun.

3. Define frictional force and list its properties. The force acting between two surfaces in contact and trying to oppose the motion of one surface over the other is called frictional force. Frictional force is produced only when one surface moves over the other The frictional force always opposes the motion of one surface over the other and tries to stop the movement. It depends on the nature of the two surfaces. It depends on the mass of the body. It does not depend on the area of contact of the surfaces.

4. Describe through an activity that frictional force depends on the nature of the two surfaces in contact. [ACTIVITY 3. Page 45]

5. What are the various effects of friction? Friction opposes motion. A ball rolled over the grounds stops after some time due to friction. Friction produces heat.

Page 33: Chapter 7 The Emperor’s New Clothes · What makes Beowulf a true hero? Apart from the fact he rid the land of Grendel and his mother, Beowulf was a true hero because he was fearless

When you rub your palms together for a few seconds, they become warm due to friction. Friction causes wear and tear. The tyres of vehicles get worn out wit time because of the friction between the tyres and the road.

6. Give three examples where you think friction is useful We can write on paper due to the friction between paper and pencil. Vehicles can move on the road because of the friction between the road and the tyres. Parts of machines move on each other because of friction.

Short answer type questions 1. Name two types of contact forces.

Muscular force and frictional force.

2. What is electrostatic force? Give two examples. Certain objects when rubbed with some other object, develop the property of attracting or repelling some bodies. This is due to electrostatic force. It is the electrostatic force which makes cereals and pulses stick to the inside of the polythene bags in which they are sold. The electrostatic force is used to separate solid pollutants from smoke coming out from factories.

3. Define frictional force. Give two examples. The force acting between two surfaces in contact and trying to oppose the motion of one surface over the other is called frictional force. When we write, a friction is developed between pen and the paper. A friction is developed between the road and the tyres when vehicles move.
