Chapter 6 – Cubix SP1 Blade Server Introduction Cubix designed the SP1 Blade Server to fit inside a BladePoint or BladeStation enclosure. The Blade Server features the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor, the Intel 865GV chipset and up to 4GBytes of 400MHz PC3200 DDR memory. Integrated on each Blade Server is Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video. Each Blade Server provides two integrated Gigabit Ethernet ports. The SP1 Blade Server also supports either one or two Serial ATA (SATA) drives and one to four PCI adapters. Cubix Blade Servers support most popular Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. The illustration below shows a singlewide Blade Servers in a BladePoint with AC power. Cubix SP1 Blade Servers for BladePoint are available in a singlewide blade carrier. The singlewide line is 2.5 inches (63.5mm) wide and provides a single, PCI expansion slot and one or two SATA drives. The singlewide blade fits in BladeStation as well as in BladePoint. Cubix Blade Servers are available in two models: SP1 and SL1. The SP1 provides one to four 3.3Volt, 32-bit PCI slots at 33 / 66MHz for high-speed communication and data transfer. An SP1 Blade Server also provides a DB-15 video port for a local monitor, a DB- 9 COM1 port, miniDIN-6 PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports and a dual USB 2.0 port (total of two USB 2.0 ports) for connecting peripherals such as USB floppy or CD-ROM drives.

Warranty / Period Parts & Labor Return to Mfr / 3 years Blade Server Ports Blade Servers provide ports at the front for connection to data and management networks, USB peripherals, COM1, video, PS/2 keyboard and mouse. The illustration on the following page shows all of the ports provided by the SP1 Blade Server. The ports are the same for the singlewide and doublewide lines as well as for the SP1 and SL1 models. COM1 is a DB-9 port. It supports a maximum transfer rate of 230Kbps and the RS-232 standard. VGA is a standard DB-15 port. It supports local video connections. A dual USB 2.0 connector provides two ports for local floppy drive or a CD / DVD drive and other USB peripherals. Two 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports and a single 10BASE-T port dedicated to management provide support for connection to various local and enterprise networks. The Gigabit (1000Mbps) ports use the Intel 82541GI chip.

All Ethernet ports use the Intel ProSet II driver set. Use Category 6 or 5e (CAT6 or CAT5e) Ethernet cables for the Gigabit port and at least CAT5 cables for Fast Ethernet port. The singlewide Blade Server features one PCI expansion slot. Each PCI adapter will provide its own unique port(s) and cable(s). Most third-party rack mount networking equipment provides ports at the front. Examples are network hubs, switches and routers. Connect USB Peripherals Cubix Blade Servers provide a dual USB port at the front of the blade for a total of two USB ports. Cubix provides these ports for connecting either temporary or permanent devices. To leave the USB devices connected permanently, ask your Cubix sales representative about the Cubix rack mount peripheral shelf. See the illustration above for the location of the dual USB 2.0 port. Push the device’s USB cable into the port when the Blade Server is running a plug-and-play (PnP) operating system (OS) and you will see the device pop up on screen. Examples of PnP OSs are Microsoft Windows 2000, XP and 2003. A non-PnP OS such as Windows NT 4.0 does not provide native USB support. Connect Local Keyboard, Video and Mouse (KVM) Cubix designed SP1 Blade Server to provide ports for keyboard, video and mouse at the front. The video port is the fourth port down from the top of the blade. Plug a DB15 video connector to this port. PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports are located three ports from the top of the blade. The keyboard port is at the left (closest to the blade) and the mouse is at the right (farthest from the blade). For the location of the PS/2 ports, see the illustration on the preceding page. You can also plug a USB cable into one of the four USB ports provided just below the video port at the front of the Blade Server. Use a PnP OS such as Windows 2000, XP or 2003 that supports USB devices. Options Cubix offers multiple options for its Blade Servers. Options are available for memory, drives and PCI expansion slots. See the following table:

Memory Options Cubix SP1 Blade Servers provide four DIMM sockets, which support up to 4GBytes of PC3200 DDR RAM. The Intel 865 Memory Controller Hub (MCH) provides two channels for memory. Even though each channel is separate, the two 64-bit channels are logically one 128-bit wide bus in dual channel mode with identical DIMMs in each socket. The 865GV supports single-channel with different DIMMs in each socket or with only one DIMM in a socket. Memory transfer rates always default to the slowest DIMM speed. The SP1 blade supports only unregistered, unbuffered, non-ECC memory. It does not support registered, ECC memory. Drive Options SP1 and SL1 Blade Server supports one or two Serial ATA (SATA) drives. The default drive for Blade Server is the 3.5-inch SATA drive. PCI Expansion Slot Options The SP1 Blade Server provides the 3.3Volt PCI expansion bus for modern adapters and the SL1 Blade Server provides the 5Volt PCI expansion bus for legacy adapters. The singlewide line provides a single PCI slot and the doublewide line provides as many as four PCI slots. Change Jumper Settings JP1 – Front Panel Reset Button The recessed reset button on the front panel always applies to the blade. If a Cubix Management Controller (CMC) is mounted on the blade (which is the default),

leave the JP1 jumpers on pins 1 and 2 (see the illustration at the right). This enables the CMC to reset the blade. If the CMC is not mounted on the blade, move the jumper to pins 2 and 3. This enables the reset button to reset the blade directly. The reset button is located near the top the front panel. Cubix sets JP1 to pins 1-2 at the factory so that the reset function goes through the CMC module. To force the reset button to apply to the Blade directly, move the jumper to pins 2-3. JP4 – Flash BIOS Flash BIOS upgrades usually arrive on a floppy disk. Apply the upgrade by setting the jumper JP4 to pins 1-2. When you have completed the upgrade, protect the system from accidental erasure by moving the jumper to pins 2-3 or removing it altogether. See the Illustration on the following page for the location of JP4. To flash the BIOS locally, use the following procedure: 1. Shut down the blade and remove it (see Chapter 3, Insert / Remove a Blade). 2. Set jumper JP3 to pins 2 and 3 as shown in the illustration above. 3. Replace the blade and power it up. 4. Run the update executable file. 5. Remove the blade and set jumper JP4 back to pins 1 and 2. 6. Replace the blade and power it up. JP6 – CMOS Memory Clear Use jumper JP6 to clear CMOS memory. This is useful if someone has set the password protection for CMOS access and you need to access CMOS without the password. Cubix sets the jumper to pins 1-2 to disable CMOS memory clear. To clear CMOS memory, set jumper JP6 to pins 2-3 for 5 seconds and then return the jumper to pins 1-2. See the figure at the right for the location of JP6. JP7 / JP10 – Ethernet The SP1 Blade Server provides two RJ-45 ports for Ethernet 10/100/1000 BASE-TX network connections.

Jumper JP7 corresponds to the top port designated Port A. JP10 corresponds to the bottom port designated Port B. Cubix enables both 10/100/1000 ports by setting the jumpers on both ports to pins 1-2. Disable either or both 10/100/1000 ports by moving the jumpers to pins 2-3. See the figure above for the locations of JP7 and JP10. Note: If you connect only one Ethernet port for a Blade Server, use one Ethernet 10/100/1000 BASE-TX port and disable the other. This may improve boot times. The following table provides all jumper settings on the SP1 blade:

Install a PCI Video Adapter Install a third-party video adapter in the SP1 Blade Server PCI slot using the following procedure:

1. Install the video adapter in the PCI slot. 2. Power up the blade. 3. During the memory check, press the Delete key to edit CMOS. 4. Navigate to the Chipset menu and select Northbridge Configuration. 5. For Init. Graphic Adaptor Priority: PCI/Int-VGA 6. For Internal Graphics Mode Select: Disabled 7. Save settings and exit. 8. Once it boots, apply the video driver to the Operating System (OS).

If you were running the on-board video adapter, use the following procedure:

1. Once the OS boots, disable the on-board adapter (for example, in Windows, use Device Manager).

2. Install the video driver(s) for the third-party video adapter. Go to Chapter 7 – Install Software or Return to Table of Contents
