Kinds of Mental & Emotional Disorders

Mental & emotional disorders are as real as physical disorders *Myths: - They are not true illnesses, people can "snap out" of them DISORDER: a disturbance in the normal function of apart of the body

Anxiety Disorders* Anxiety and worrying are normal in certain situations* Problem when it is frequent and unreasonable

- Could be a sign of ANXIETY DISORDER (disorder in which intense anxiety or

fear keeps a person from functioning normally) * 5 types

- Generalized Anxiety Disorder - Panic Disorder - PHOBIA: intense or exaggerated fear of a specific situation or object - Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder - Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Personality Disorders

PERSONALITY DISORDER: psychological condition that affects a person's ability to interact normally with others - People have a basic need to belong and be accepted - Some people struggle with this |- Ex: passive-aggressive (trouble cooperating) & borderline (trouble with relationships)

MOOD DISORDER: disorder in which a person undergoes changes in mood that seem inappropriate or extremefeeling sad over a long period of time for no explainable reason- being overly happy, giddy, or energetic for no

apparent reason- - EX: bipolar disorder MAJOR DEPRESSION: very serious mood disorder in which people lose interest in life and can no longer find enjoyment in anything- occasional sadness is normal

Depression Among TeensTeen years can be difficult * Relationships change and may seem more complicated * Depressed teens may seem moody, angry, hostile, aggressive, irritable * May turn to alcohol or other drugs to "treat" * Can worsen if untreated Warning signs: * Irritable, lack energy, change in sleep patterns, inability to concentrate, blaming others, feeling worthless, indifference to things they used to like, physical problems, thoughts of suicide

Schizophrenia

SCHIZOPHRENIA: severe mental disorder in which people lose contact with reality

May have hallucinations where they hear/see things• Often unable to tell the difference between real

Emotional pain can become overwhelming when depression lasts for weeks or months making life seem hopeless

Causes of Teen Suicide

Teens sometimes consider suicide because they cannot handle the pressures they face at home/school * New challenges or responsibilities * Life-changing events (divorce, death, moving) * Alcohol dependency in the family * Domestic violence * Feel disconnected from or rejected by peers

Warning Signs of Suicide

Teens often share plans openly or drop hints

Warning signs include:* Sudden fascination with the topic of death

* Dramatic changes in person's appearance * Self-destructive behavior * Withdrawal from friends, family, and regular

activities * A sudden change in mood

Providing Support

Warning signs are often a call for help - they don't really want to die

You can provide help/support:* talk to the person

* showing interest in their problems * ask if they plan to hurt themselves * urge them to share their feelings with an adult * NEVER promise to keep suicide plans a secret

Dealing with Depression

If you find yourself thinking about suicide, remember:

* suicide is never a solution to depression * feelings of depression don't go on forever * you are not alone SPAN - Suicide Prevention Action Network * Organization that helps teens deal with suicidal thoughts

If you have been experiencing these signs, seek help:
