-Came hoping for opportunities to make better lives for themselves

and their families.

- many were escaping poverty, hunger, or lack of jobs.-farms and factories offered the hope of income, food, and work

- Some were escaping violence, war, or injustice.

- Jewish immigrants left Europe to escape mistreatment because of their religion.

- Most didn't expect to find easy riches. They expected to find jobs,

political and religious freedom, and even some adventure.

-Most ships carrying immigrants from Europe landed in New York City.

-Most were taken by ferry to Ellis Island- an immigration station -an immigration station is a place immigrants go before getting

permission to enter the United states.

- Doctors checked for dangerous diseases. Government officials asked questions about where they were from, the work they

did, and where they planned to live.

-Immigrants often spent an entire day in long lines at Ellis Island.

-Once the examinations were over, the immigrants took a ferry back to New York City to begin their lives.
