John Allison, the Elder
Chapter 2: The Second Generation
All of the children of John Allison the Elder were born in Ireland and most of them moved to
Pennsylvania in the early 1700’s, except for Jean (AD), who appears to have stay in Ireland. Then
the second generation moved to America is unclear. Did they all come to America, when John
Allison the Elder arrived? William Allison's biography in CBEJV stated he arrived in 1730.
James, Patrick, John, and Robert seemed to has received early patents on land, however Robert
was only 15 if he arrived in 1722. A probable scenario is, the first group of this Allison Family to
arrive in North America landed at Philadelphia or New Castle on the Delaware River and remained
in that area for a time looking for a place to settle, and as time pasted additional family member
remaining in Ireland came to America. I find roots of this family in the Cecil and Kent County,
Maryland and vicinity. All of John the Elders children appear to have eventually settled in
Donegal Township of Lancaster County near or with their father, but as time passed some moved
to other counties and some to other states.
II-1. James Allison AA (John, I-1) The CBEJV lists James as the eldest son of John the Elder and Jannett and born Nov. 12, 1693 in
Ireland. In his father’s will of 1728, John the Elder, mentions James (AA) as his eldest son.
James’ will dated Aug. 31, 1762, suggests he lived to an age of 69 years.10
The will mentions his
wife Rebehak, Executrix; son James (AAA); grandsons (he called nephews) John DeFrance
(AABA) and James DeFrance (AABB) sons of his daughter Anna DeFrance (AAB); daughter
Janet Watts (AAC) and her husband William Watts; daughter Margaret Bowman (AAD); daughter
Sarah (AAE); and daughter Rebecca (AAF). In the Lancaster County Miscellaneous Book of
1768-1772 page 41, William Allison (AB) reports to the court as executor of his brother Robert’s
will that he has made the distribution of the legacy, to James (AAA), son of his brother James
(AA).
James’s wife, Rebehak, maiden name is unknown, her will is dated Jan. 10, 1764. The will names
daughter Sarah (AAE), Rebehak (AAF), Jean (AAC), and Margaret (AAD).11
She does not
mention her daughter Anna (AAB), she died two years earlier, she does mention Anna’s children
John DeFrance (AABA) and James DeFrance (AABB). She also mentions her son James (AAA)
and brother John Allison (?). I had originally thought that when Rebehak mentioned her brother
John Allison, she really meant to write brother-in-law John Allison, should be investigated and

correlated with other John Allison's of the period, since marriage with close relatives was not
uncommon at that time.
III-1. James Allison: AAA (John, I-1; James, II-1) According to his will he died circa
March 1776 unmarried.
III-2. Anna Allison: AAB (John, I-1; James, II-1) Anna was born circa 1736 in Donegal
Township, Lancaster County, married John Henry DeFrance, had two children, she died
1762 in East Heidelberg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
III-3. Janet Allison: AAC (John, I-1; James, II-1) Janet married William Watt and moved
to North Carolina.
III-4. Margaret Allison: AAD (John, I-1; James, II-1) Margaret married Hugh Bowman
and moved to North Carolina.
III-5. Sarah Allison: AAE (John, I-1; James, II-1) Sarah remained unmarried.
III-6. Rebecca Allison: AAF (John, I-1; James, II-1) Rebecca married Hugh Caldwell and
had a daughter Jane.
II-2. William Allison AB (John, I-1) The CBEJV lists William Allison of Greencastle as the second eldest son, but does not mention
him as the son of John Allison the Elder and Jannett, born June 17, 1696 in Ireland. In his father’s
will of 1728, William is also listed in this document as his second eldest son and he receives a
plantation, a horse, plow, and harness. William married Catharine Craig in about 1737. William’s
will matches CBEJV listing of the children of William and Catherine.12
The children and relatives
of William and Catharine Allison mentioned in his will were; son William (ABE), son John
(ABA), son Patrick (ABB), daughter Agnes (ABC) son Robert's (ABD), daughter Catharine
(ABDA), grandson William McCrea (ABCC), grandson William Allison, could be (ABAC) or
(ABEA), nephew John Allison (AEE), and William’s deceased brother Robert Allison (AF).
William’s brother Robert names William as his executor in his will of 1762. In the Lancaster
County Miscellaneous Book of 1768-1772 page 41, William Allison reports to the court as
executor of his brother Robert’s will that he has made the distribution of Robert’s legacy to his
(William’s) children. William’s (AB) will, dated December 14, 1778 means William died at the
approximate age of 82 years.
To each of their four sons of William and Catherine Allison gave a choice between a legacy of
farmland or a liberal education, the family estate not being deemed sufficiently large to do both for
each son. Their oldest son, John chose the legacy and becomes a large landowner/farmer in the
area; he receives 5 pounds in his father's will. Patrick graduated from the University of
Pennsylvania, entered the ministry, founded the First Presbyterian Church of Baltimore and
receives 100 pounds in his father's will . Robert, the third son became an attorney and lived in
Alexandria, Virginia. However, Robert receives 1000 pounds in his father's will. William, the
fourth son apparently chose the legacy and became a farmer living in the old family farmstead. In
his father's will he receives all remaining estate in his father's name.
III-7. John Allison: ABA (John, I-1; William, II-2) John was born Dec. 23, 1738 in
Lancaster County and died June 14, 1795. He married Elizabeth Wilkins Nov. 3,
1768 in Baltimore, Maryland, assumed by his brother Patrick (ABB).

III-8. Patrick Allison: ABB (John, I-1; William, II-2) Patrick was born, Nov. 7, 1740 in
Lancaster County and died Aug.21, 1804 in Baltimore, Maryland. He married Wellary
Buchanan in Baltimore Maryland in March of 1787.
III-9. Nancy Allison: ABC (John, I-1; William, II-2) Nancy was born Feb. 26, 1743 in
Lancaster County and died circa 1813 in Wilkes County, Georgia. She married Robert
McCrea.
III-10. Robert Allison: ABD (John, I-1; William, II-2) Robert was born Feb.4, 1745 in
Lancaster County, he married Ann Ramsey. Lived in Alexandria, Virginia for a period,
then moved to Fauquier County, Virginia.
III-11. William Allison: ABE (John, I-1; William, II-2) William was born, Nov. 15, 1749 in
Lancaster County and died Sept. 4, 1825. He married Mary McLanahan.
III-12. Catherine Allison: ABF (John, I-1; William, II-2) Catherine was born circa 1751 in
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and died circa 1824 in Wilkes County, Georgia. She
married James Hendricks.
II-3. Patrick Allison: AC (John, I-1) The CBEJV lists Patrick as born Feb. 21, 1699 in Ireland. In his father’s will of 1728, Patrick
seems to be slighted, he only received a young horse. In Lancaster County Deed Book CC, page
123, states that the sons of William Penn sold to Patrick Allison, then of Lancaster County, and in
Donegal Township, by Conewago Creek, 175 acres.
The following are excerpts from a Maryland Court Record of a lawsuit between Patrick and his
father-in-law. This and his will are only record I have of Patrick, but a lot of details are available.
Patrick Allison sometime in the late summer of 1734 went to Somerset County, Maryland. He
professed to teach dancing and set up a dancing school in a short time afterwards, the school was
kept at Capt. John Scott’s home about four miles from the John Fleming house and Elizabeth, his
daughter. When Patrick first visited Fleming house to invite the Fleming children to attend his
school, John Fleming refused to send any of his children. The children of John Fleming were
Mary M., Elizabeth, William, and Sarah. Patrick persuaded William Fleming the son to sign for
himself and his sister Elizabeth contrary and without the parental approval, but they may have had
limited attendance, because the school failed after a short period. In November of 1734, about
three or four months after the first school failed, he started schools in two places for the
conveniences of his scholars. One at the home of George Bounds, which was about two and a half
miles from the Fleming house and at the Court House which was about five miles from the
Fleming house. Apparently, Patrick took great pains to convince John Fleming that his children
would benefit from attending dance school and spent considerable time at the Fleming household
making his point. Patrick finally talked John Fleming into letting Elizabeth, Sarah and William
attend dancing school. During this time he began to chiefly reside at the Fleming house even
having his washing done there. During the time of keeping school, William Fleming stated that,
Patrick would very often be in the company of Elizabeth, often in her bedroom in the night,
without the knowledge of her parents. Elizabeth probably became pregnant in February of 1735,
she told her sister she was with child and that Patrick was the father in April or May of 1735.
After her father learned of this situation, he shortly afterwards, arranged for Elizabeth to move to
Cecil County, Maryland to avoid embarrassing the family. John Fleming had a sister that married
David Wallace and lived in Cecil County, Maryland, in one account states New Castle County
![Page 4: Chapter 2: The Second Generation - Cloud Object Storage · Chapter 2: The Second Generation ... I-1; William, II-2) Robert was born Feb.4, 1745 in Lancaster County, he married Ann](https://reader036.fdocuments.net/reader036/viewer/2022062505/5ccce24e88c993d2098cd2a2/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Delaware. However, the two Counties border each other and William Fleming stated Cecil County
and he was the one that relocated Elizabeth. Patrick visited Elizabeth there, and removed
Elizabeth to one of his aunt’s who lived about two miles away. When John Fleming found this
out he sent William his son, to relocate Elizabeth out of this location and to Kent County to
another Fleming relation further from Patrick, at the house of Henry Morrison, cousin of
Elizabeth’s mother. Elizabeth returned to Somerset County the latter part of September of 1735.
When Patrick lost track of Elizabeth in the interfamily shuffle, he apparently went to Donegal
Township in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He owned a farm in Donegal and was where most
of his family resided. He had promised Elizabeth he would marry her, so he departed Donegal in
late September, with his brother Robert Allison (AF). Robert Allison was to be his second, and
was to mediate a dower with Elizabeth’s father.
Patrick had returned to the John Fleming’s house about four days before the expected birth,
accompanied by his brother Robert. Robert Allison told John Fleming, his brother would not
marry the Elizabeth without the described dower, this was the day before the secretly unscheduled
marriage. I am not sure of the exact date of their marriage, the latter part of September of 1735 in
Somerset County is as close as information allows. Apparently the marriage was scheduled by
Patrick, who sent a message to Elizabeth through William Fleming, her brother, for her to meet
him at Robert Hodges House at a certain time to be married. Patrick promised to marry Elizabeth,
but tried to accomplish the marriage with a dower, which caused a feud that lasted their lifetimes.
The first child by Elizabeth was stillborn which was in the later part of September, being about a
fortnight after their marriage, and her sister stated that the baby did not come to a mature birth.
The record states that Patrick and Elizabeth lived with her parents for fifteen months as borders
and during that time Elizabeth gave birth to two children. The record is not clear whether the two
children included the first born. I assume it does, because in the lawsuit of 1742 they only speak
of one child. About two or three years after their marriage Elizabeth died, circa 1738, leaving
Patrick with one female child born circa 1737, named Grace to raise.
Patrick’s will, mentions his daughter, Grace Allison (ACA) who was born circa 1737, as the main
heiress to his estate. He named his brother, Robert Allison (AF) as Executor of his will and
guardian of his daughter, in case of the death of Robert Allison of Connawago Creek of Donegal
Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; he names William Allison and Captain John Meas
(Mease), both of Philadelphia to become guardians if Robert can not fulfill his duties. The next
provision of the will names the children of his brothers and sisters as the beneficiaries of his estate
if Grace Allison and Robert Allison have preceded him in death. He names his brothers James
(AA), William (AB), Robert (AF), and John (AE) and his sisters as Jean Smith (AD) of Ireland
and Margaret White (AE) of Kent County, assumed Maryland.
Patrick’s will, mentions William Allison and Captain John Mease living in Philadelphia, this
William is not mention in Patrick’s will as a brother, therefore I believe they are probably cousins.
In John Mease’s will of 1767, he mentions William Allison of Philadelphia as his cousin,
therefore I assume that John Mease’s mother is an Allison’s or William’s mother is a Mease. A
book concerning Dr. James McHenry, the son-in-law of Grace Allison Caldwell mentions, Grace
married a cousin William Allison.

Once again, all the children of John Allison the Elder are also listed exactly in Patrick’s will.
From the 1748 will of Patrick Allison; we can concluded that he must have died at the
approximately age of 49. Grace married David Caldwell before 1761, when they sold Patrick’s
plantation in Donegal Township for ₤467 to John France, on May 18, 1761.13
III-13. Grace Allison: ACA (John, I-1; Patrick, II-3) Born circa 1737 in Somerset
County, Maryland. She first, married David Caldwell, circa 1758. Second, Grace
marries William Allison of Philadelphia, mentioned as second guardian in her fathers
will. She marries William Allison Dec. 17, 1764. Grace’s will is dated Aug. 2
1791.14
II-4. Jean Allison: AD (John, I-1)
The CBEJV lists Jean as born June 22, 1701 in Ireland. In her father’s will of 1728, he just
mentions her as daughter Jean. He must have been sending her a message, he only left her 2
shilling. She would have been in her late teens or early twenties when her father and family left
for America. I assume that Jean married before the family left Ireland and remained behind. Her
brother, Robert’s (AF) will of 1765 mentions Jean as deceased, and leaves money to her sons.
Patrick (AC) mentions his sister Jean (AD) in his will of 1748 as married to Mr. Smith and living
in Ireland. She is the mother of the four sons. In the Lancaster County Miscellaneous Book of
1768-1772 page 41, William Allison (AB) reports to the court as executor of his brother Robert’s
(AF) will that he has made the distribution of Robert’s legacies that includes her sons of his sister
Jean Smith (AD). She would have been somewhere between the ages of 47 and 64 years old when
she died.
III-14. John Smith: ADA (John, I-1; Jean, II-3) John was born in Ireland.
III-15. William Smith: ADB (John, I-1; Jean, II-3) William was born in Ireland.
III-16. James Smith: ADC (John, I-1; Jean, II-3) James was born in Ireland.
III-17. Robert Smith: ADD (John, I-1; Jean, II-3) Robert was born in Ireland.
II-5. John Allison, Esq.: AE (John, I-1)
John Allison was born January 18, 1704 in Ireland, assumed in Londonderry, Northern Ireland.
John (AE) arrived in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania pre-1722, age of 18. In his father’s will of
1728, John (AE) and his brother Robert (AF) receive most of the assets of their father.
John’s will dated May of 1767; establishes that John died at the age of 63 years.15
John's will does
not mention his parents, only his wife Ann and children; Patrick (AEA), Jean (AEB), Rosanna
(AEC), Margaret (AED), John (AEE), James (AEF), Ann (AEG), William (AEH), and Robert
(AEI). John practiced law in Lancaster County, and was a magistrate for many years. In 1742
John was elected to the Lancaster County Commissioners.16
On Jan.13, 1761 John Allison was
appointed a Justice of the Courts of Lancaster County, he served in this position until his death.17

He was referred to in various wills and deeds as one of His Majesties Justices of the Peace for
Lancaster County.
The following excerpt is taken from Engle’s Notes and Queries, the same was printed in 1925
Fredrick Virkus concerning John Allison, Esq.:
4-John (d: Donegal, Pennsylvania, May of 1767), m: Ann _____(she married 2nd
, John
Stewart), had children: Patrick; Jean, m: George Clark; Rose, m: James Crawford;
Margaret; John; James (born 1750); Ann (born 1753); William (born 1755); Robert Allison
(born 1757);
The above description of the John Allison, Esq. family is not completely accurate, they state that
John marries Ann and has the following children. Patrick; Jean, m: George Clark; Rose, m: James
Crawford; Margaret; John; James (born 1750); Ann (born 1753); William (born 1755); Robert
(born 1757). I am of the belief that John marry his first wife about 1735, based on his oldest child,
Patrick, being born 1737 or 1738. John Allison widowed sometime after 1745, his first wife’s
name is unknown. They further state that after the death of John Allison, Ann marries John
Stewart. This is not correct, Ann Anderson, daughter of the Rev. James Anderson, had married
John Stewart in about 1735. After John Stewart died in circa 1748, she married the widowed John
Allison and had the last four children of John Allison. After the second marriage of John Allison
to Ann Anderson, in 1750 John Allison settled along the west side of Coney creek, near Nissley's
mill, in western Donegal Township.18
The household included the first five children of John
Allison and his first wife, three children of John Stewart and Ann, then as time pasted four
additional children were added to the John Allison and Ann Anderson family. Information
concerning the Stewart’s, Anderson, and Allison’s can be found in a publication title “Colonel
George Steuart and his wife Margaret Harris their Ancestors and Descendant” of 1907, by Robert
Stewart at the Newberry Library. The author of the above seems to thinks John Allison first wife
was a Campbell. John’s will dated May of 1767 establishes that John died at the age of 63 years.
When John Allison, Esq. AE, died in 1767, the children of his first wife were all over the age of 21
and all the children by Ann Anderson were considered minors and were appointed guardians.
James being the oldest of John and Ann’s children was about sixteen when his father died. The
youngest son, Robert would have been 10 years old at the time of his father's dead and may still
have been a minor at the time of his mother's death. The family of the first wife had scattered
across Pennsylvania and Virginia by the time of their fathers deaths. The children of John and
Ann seem to have stayed in Lancaster County until the death of their mother. The date of Ann
Anderson Allison death is unknown, but believed to be in the late 1770’s. The family farm and
lands ended up in the hands of their daughter Anna Allison (AEG) born in 1753. Anna marries
three times, the last to Joseph Vance (Vaner). Anna signs a pre-nuptial agreement with Joseph
Vance. The agreement states that if she dies first, Joseph has to pay her sibling ₤1600 and return
her personal belongings, if he wants to retain the farm she owes. The instrument of transfer of
these lands is dated June 11, 1819, the document is in Deed Book 16, page 597.19

And it being motioned to the Court and represented that at the Orphans Court
held on the seventh day of June 1768 Ann Allison widow of the said John
Allison deceased appeared in Court and produced an account for the boarding
education and cloathing the minor children of the said John Allison de-
ceased amounting to thirty eight pounds for the space of one year after
the death of the said John and that the said Court did allow the sums
account and direct that James Anderson and Joseph Candour the executors
of the said John Allison deceased should pay the said sum of ₤38..0..0 to
the said Ann Allison out of the present estate of the said deceased and it
being now objected that the same sum ought not be paid out of the per-
sonal estate of the said deceased and included in the said executors general
account as thereby all the children and the matters being taken into considera-
tion the Court would not suffer the said executors to charge the same in
their account and as it appears that James Anderson one of the said execu-
tors have paid the said ₤38..0..0 to the said Ann Allison the Court do
direct that the guardians of the said four younger children of the deceased
do out of the money’s in their hands belonging to the said minors refund and
pay back the said thirty eight pounds to the said James Anderson and charge
the same to their ward.

deceased………………………….₤49..3..1
To William Allison brother to the said
Robert…………………………….₤49..3..1

₤98..6..2
II-6. Robert Allison: AF (John, I-1)
The CBEJV lists Robert as born Dec. 21, 1707 in Ireland. In his father’s will of 1728, Robert (AF)
and John (AE) receive most of the assets of their father. Robert’s will of 1765; Lancaster County
Will Book B, Volume 1, page 429; suggest he was unmarried and had no descendants. William
Allison (AB) in his will mentions his nephew John Allison (AEE), and thanking him for his caring
of his brother Robert (AF) during his sickness. This further indicates Robert (AF) did not have a
family. He left his estate to the children of his brothers and sisters. He mention his brother James
(AA), who is deceased and bequeath to his son James (AAA); two son Patrick (ABB) and Robert
(ABD) of his brother William (AB) are awarded proceed from his estate; Patrick (AC) his brother,
is already deceased and Robert (AF) leaves nothing to his daughter Grace (ACA); Jean (AD) is
mentioned as deceased, but he leaves gifts for her sons; he mentions his brother John (AE),
bequeaths to John’s (AE) children: Patrick (AEA), John (AEE), Jenny (AEB), and Margaret
(AED) portion of his estate and Rose (AEC) and William (AEH) are mentioned in the codicil; he
mentions his sister Margaret (AG) and leaves a portion of his estate to her sons John White (AGA)
and William White (AGB). The above information confirms he is a brother to the sibling of the
John (A) and Jannett Allison.
In Robert’s will, he request his land be sold at public auction. The sale is recorded in Lancaster
County Deed Book M page 430, Robert’s neighbor Christian Snyder was the high bidder at
₤3,101. The executors of Robert Allison’s will were, John McDowell who relinquished his trust,

John Allison (AE) died before the sale of land, leaving William Allison (AB) as the only executor.
This is further proof that the excerpt taken from Ellis & Evans History of Lancaster County of
1883, is incorrect. They list William Allison that married Grizzle as Robert brother, William died
in 1739 twenty six years before Robert’s will was written. I think the Ellis & Evans History of
Lancaster County of 1883 has been an impediment to solving Allison Genealogy, it traditionally
has been a building block or starting point.
In the Lancaster County Miscellaneous Book of 1768-1772 page 42, William Allison reports to the
court as executor of his brother Robert’s will that he has made the following distributions of the
legacy. To the Hospital in Philadelphia; the Grammar School of Newark, Delaware; to James
(AAA) , son of his brother James (AA); to Patrick Allison (AEA), Jane Clark (AEB), John Allison
(AEE), Margaret Allison (AED) children of his brother John Allison (AE); Patrick (ABB) and
Robert Allison (ABD), sons of his brother William Allison (AB); John (ADA), William (ADB),
James (ADC), and Robert Smith (ADD) sons of his sister Jean Smith (AD); John White (AGA)
and William White (AGB) sons of his sister Margaret White (AG).
II-7. Margaret Allison: AG (John, I-1)
The CBEJV lists Margaret as born June 24, 1709 in Ireland. In her father’s will of 1728, Margaret
was probably still living at home, he gives her, her horse and saddle, another horse, and ₤10.
Patrick (AC) mentions his sister Margaret (AG) in his will of 1748 as married to Mr. White and
living in Kent County, Maryland. Her brother, Robert’s (AF) will of 1765 mentions her as
deceased and mentions her children John White (AGA) and William White (AGB).
In the Lancaster County Miscellaneous Book of 1768-1772 page 41, William Allison (AB) reports
to the court as executor of his brother Robert’s (AF) will that he has made distributions of Robert’s
legacy, John White (AGA) and William White (AGB) sons of his sister Margaret White (AF),
who was deceased at the time.
III-27. John White: AGA (John, I-1; Margaret, II-7)
III-28. William White: AGB (John, I-1; Margaret, II-7)
