You know that gutturals prefer a-type vowels. Because ofthis preference, the stem vowel in II-Guttural and III-ע/ח

verbs is Pathach, not Holem as in the strong verbparadigm.

Most of the changes that take place in the Imperfect of thisweak verb class result from the fact that the א in third root

position is quiescent. This quiescent א changes the stemvowel to Qamets in most forms of the paradigm. Note the

Biconsonantal verbs are composed of two rather thanthree root consonants. You will recall that this weak verb

class is sometimes designated II-ו/י. It should be clearfrom the chart below why this weak class has been called

II-ו/י. With the Imperfect and related conjugations, amedial vowel letter is found in every form. In the

Imperfect, these Biconsonantal or II-ו/י verbs are furtherclassified by their medial vowel letter.

Chapter 16 – Qal Imperfect: WeakVerbs with Only Two Consonants in Certain

Inflected Forms: Identification

1. With III-ה verbs, the five forms without sufformatives end inSeghol-He (ה .ינה) The twin 3fp and 2fp forms .(יבנ (תבנexhibit the Yod characteristic of this weak verb class. This isthe most common weak verb class, so begin here.

2. With I-י verbs and הלך, the preformative vowel is Tsere (ישבand ילך). In the Qal stem, only I-י verbs (and a few GeminateType 2 verbs) have a Tsere preformative vowel.

3. With I-נ verbs and לקח, you can identify the verbal root bythe presence of the Daghesh Forte in the first root consonantof every form (יפל and יקח). This Daghesh Forte representsthe assimilated נ (or ל of לקח).

4. With Geminate verbs, a Daghesh Forte appears in the fiveforms that take sufformatives (יס.בו). In those forms withoutsufformatives, the Qamets preformative vowel (יסב)distinguishes this weak verb class from the other weak verb


classes that have only two root letters.
