two places, the first is http://flyingthingz.com/ . Flying Thingz has the Flying Lawnmower, Witch, Race Car, Snoopies Dog House, Flag and a few others. I have seen the Flying Lawnmower fly and all of the videos also indicated that it is a good flier. The Flying Witch seems to be somewhat of a challenge on a turbulent day but flies well otherwise. The second place to buy kits is

http://www.hoosiercutoutservice.com/ which has many different types of planes. I bought a kit from them and was very impressed with the fit and finish. For the Something Different Planes, look under Otto Dieffenbach. Once you open that page there are links to the Ezone Magazine threads that discuss construction and show videos. The threads also have downloadable plans if you want to build your own. Make sure to check out “Fly Guy”. This website also has a Flying Shark.

You can definitely waste a whole day by going to google and search for “RC Flying” followed by Witch, Dog House, Stop Sign, Christmas Tree, People, Person, Saucer, Fly Guy, Super Hero, Tank, Shark, etc.

Show and Tell We are going to have a short show and tell at the end of each meeting. This only works if people take the time to prepare and bring something to the meeting. Contact Me Phone: 757-876-1241 Email: [email protected] Address: 8630 Diascund Road, Lanexa, Va. 23089

The March 12, 2015 meeting was held at the Williamsburg Christian Church and called to order by the president at 7:00pm with 15 members and 2 guests present. The President announced the minutes from the February meeting. A motion was made to accept the minutes as published. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

Treasurer’s Report: The treasurer reported on the current operating & mower fund balances, expenditures for toilet service and our annual donation to the church.

Site Improvements: Tom indicated that the field remains very wet from recent & current rain and encouraged pilots to continue parking along the gravel roadway. Gary will roll the entire runway when Tom feels the ground will support our equipment without leaving additional tire ruts. As a reminder, this year all mowing requests, intentions and fulfillments are to be conveyed between Tom, his maintenance crew and any volunteers by a timely e-mail to eliminate duplication of effort. Bob Felberg bought to everyone attention that the West side of the shelter roof has further deteriorated and requires some attention.

Activities: NNPRC will hold their annual frost Bite Fun Fly on Saturday 3/14/15 with sign in at 11:30am for flying at noon. The next area swap meet will be in Mechanicsville on 4/11/15 with indoor flying afterward. CVA will have their annual picnic on 4/18/15 and also entertain the WALT initiative. Winston handed out his “official” egg drop apparatus for those that will participate in this memorial event to remember former club member Garrett Freeman Post. Tex will provide food & Jon will be the grill master. The Chesapeake club will have their swap meet on 4/18/15. CVA will host our annual Electric Fly on 5/2/15. Tom provided flyers for WOW X that is scheduled for May 16th 2015. The event is already sanctioned, raffle planes have been secured and this year we will attempt to include event long air cover. Safety: Nothing to report. Training: Nothing to report. Club Promotion: Alan asked everyone to continue using some of the new features he has incorporated into the club web page and provide him with some feedback and ideas. Old Business: Nothing to report. New Business: This month our guest Tony Bonanno gave an open invitation to all club members to participate in the Science Fair being held at Magruder Elementary School in Williamsburg on April 28 from 6 to 8pm. Any members interested will have an opportunity to talk with students & parents about all aspects of flying both full scale and flying models as well as an opportunity to fly indoor planes in the gymnasium. Alan Fry will assume the recently vacated position of Newsletter Editor. Gary will contact AMA to update the roster to reflect this change. Alan also suggested we incorporate our Something Different event into NMAD. The response was positive but left on the table for further discussion.

Show & Tell: During this month’s Show & Tell, Winston distributed “official” egg drop apparatus to all members present. He will provide copies of the rules before the event. Winston’s guest, David Carpenter showed a computer based slide show on all development & testing of a nuclear aircraft. John displayed and talked about the unique flight characteristics of his new Mini Just Ain’t Right (JAR) built from plans. There being no further club business the meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm and a fuel raffle was held.

Spring has been a real drudge, when it come to the weather. Hopefully this will improve shortly. Two April events that rain will not affect are swap meets that are coming up. One in Hanover, and one in Chesapeake. Check the Presidents column on times, dates and addresses. Our April event will consist of the CVA picnic, set for April 18 (rain or shine). Provided we have good weather, we'll have "open" flying. The flying will consist of both open and combat at mid-day. Open to both members and guests. If you want to bring food, by all means do, though it is not a requirement.

Website of the Month This month’s website of the month is called “Gibbs Guides”. The website has both paid and free articles pertaining to RC Airplanes. I found a great free article that showed how to set up a separate battery from the receiver battery for powering electric retracts. Here is the link to the webpage of free articles:

Do you have a favorite website? If so, let me know and I will put it in the newsletter. Favorite online store, how to build, how to fly, etc- send me the link! My email address:

Futaba Transmitter Battery

On many occasions I have been delayed getting to the flying field because I was waiting for my Futaba 7C

transmitter battery to charge. Further, replacement batteries are getting more expensive and harder to find in

decent capacities. Therefore, I decided it was time to make some modifications to my Futaba 7C.

I went to Radio Shack and bought an 8 AA cell battery holder for $3.00. The battery holder has a 9 volt battery

type connector on the end. Unfortunately, using a connector prevented the battery holder from fitting in the

transmitter. Therefore, I just soldered a Futaba battery lead directly to the battery holder connectors. I then

used a little hot glue to secure the battery lead wiring to the end of the battery holder. For batteries, I decided to

go with Eneloop batteries that have almost twice the capacity of the NiCad packs that I was using. So far it

seems to be working well. Based on my experience with my Tactic transmitter using Eneloop batteries, I’m

hopeful that I will be able to go at least ½ of a year before I need to recharge the batteries.

Here are some pictures of the battery holder that I fixed up for my Futaba transmitter:

See you at the field. Alan Fry Training Coordinator
