matter- anything that has mass and takes up space
![Page 3: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
mass- is the amount of mattersomething has in it
![Page 4: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
volume- the amount of spacematter takes up
![Page 5: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
volume- the amount of space matter takes up
You can calculate volume by multiplying the length of an object times its width times its height.
![Page 6: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
volume- the amount of space matter takes up
You can also calculate volume by water displacement:
If the water in the graduated cylinderstarts at 200 mL, and goes up to 300mL when you add a coin, you can tell the coin’s volume must be????

liters/milliliters- metric units for measuring the volume of liquids
milliliter=mL
liter = L

balance scale- a tool used to measure the mass of an object
![Page 17: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
grams/kilograms- metric unitsused to measure mass
A 1 liter bottle of water has a mass of 1kg.
A dime or a paper clip has a mass of 1g.
![Page 18: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
meters/centimeters- metric units used to measure length/height/width
Doorways are oftenabout 1m across Your pinky finger is
about 1cm across.

How Dense Are Solids, Liquids, and Gases?
![Page 23: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
What does density have to do with sinking andfloating?
Click the picture below to do an online lab and test objects to see if they will float.
An object will float if it is less dense than the liquid in which it is placed.
![Page 24: Chapter 12 Lesson 1 Physical Properties](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022051117/56816001550346895dcf0132/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
buoyancy – an object’s ability to float
