Causes of Cultural Change
• Many forces can change how people live and thus change their culture– New technology– Environmental changes– New ideas- developed within a group or through
exposure to another group’s ideas (cultural diffusion)

Cultural Diffusion
• The movement of customs, traditions, or ideas from one place to another
• Can occur through trade, migration, communication, and force
• Causes changes in culture

Avoiding Ethnocentrism
• “Always look for the up side”– i.e. there MUST be a positive aspect to every cultural practice
for someone;– OTHERWISE, the culture wouldn’t be doing it
