MR. DALANO R.

DeSOUZA Greetings my fellow students, I come to

you at a time when the Cave Hill Association

of Post-Graduate Students is in dire need of

resuscitation. CHAPS as we affectionately call

it, is gasping for air. For too long has an association that should be vibrantly

representing and advocating the needs of post-graduate students been without a

representative, or a full council. It is with this backdrop that I, Dalano DaSouza come to you, full of desire, seeking

your vote to be our next CHAPS President. I come to you not only with desire, but

experience as well. Being the former Vincentian Students Association PRO, Chairman and

Deputy Chairman of the Sir Philip Sherlock Hall, Vice-President of the Combined

Territories Students Association among others, I can assure you that student welfare has

long since been at the fore of my mind.

If elected, with your support I hope to advocate for, and accomplish the following: A

better administered system of supervision for research within all faculties; swift and

efficient handling of practicum assignments arranged ahead of time; some level of

subsidized printing of reading material (journals etc.); the utilization of the week assigned

to CHAPS to put on a week of activities; bridging the disconnect between faculties and

departments, for example CERMES, The CaveHill School of Business etc. as well as with

the main campus and its constituents. This manifesto does not allow me to elaborate on all

of my plans, but come Tuesday 16th October your vote has the power to empower me to

breathe new life into CHAPS.

Mr. Dalano DeSouza

Dear Post Graduate Student,

My name is Richard Skeete and I am seeking your VOTE in the upcoming postgraduate guild elections for the post of President.

Now I can already see the look on your face asking, does the post graduate programme have a Guild Council? Well YES we do. This student representative body has been quiet for the past two years. With your VOTE that will no longer be the case.

UWI POST GRADUATES WILL HAVE A VOICE!! The kind of voice that resonate in the halls of the post graduate building and in the board room on main campus putting forward YOUR cases and concerns.

Some of the issues that will be addressed during my term of office if elected include:

• Facilitating access to the post grad building for parents who have the weekend responsibility of studying and caring for their children.

• Improved shuttle service for ALL postgraduates.

• More visibility of the elected officers to address the MANY concerns of students with the assurance that someone has your back!

• Improved facilities for US to have a canteen service or access to HEALTHIER facilities when we are putting in those long hours of studying.

• Address student matters in a CONFIDENTIAL manner ensuring that HIGH VALUES of TRUST are in

place and enforced.

• Development of the UWI Postgraduate P.I.L.L.A.R.S programme where students engage in HOLISTIC

developmental programme, striking a balance between academics and real world.

• Build linkage with the BUSINESS COMMUNITY to provide opportunities for work placements and

possible employment on completion of the Graduate Programme.

I know you are probably smiling, jumping up and down saying YES YES YES we CAN!! So a VOTE for me means that WE initiate change and give post graduates a voice!

UWI Postgraduate Programme is the PILLAR that the University’s success and reputation is hinged on!

COME OUT ON TUESDAY OCTOBER 23rd, AND CAST YOUR VOTE.

Thank You for your time and your VOTE!

Richard

In keeping with the mandate of CHAPS, and in addition to those duties set to the Vice President in the CHAPS Constitution, I wish to bring the following to the organization: First and foremost, transforming the CHAPS into an effective and efficient body, and ensuring visibility and availability to the students is priority on my list of objectives. Bolstering this objective would be achieved through four main operations:

1. CHAPS Unite!: it is essential to the success of the association and its members to foster a sense of camaraderie and community. Strength in numbers is essential to get us thought the trying times of post-graduate study.

2. CHAPS Represents: informed articulation of student matters and issues is the duty of CHAPS. Ensuring that students have the opportunity to voice their concerns and have them addressed subsequently is of paramount importance.

3. CHAPS Benefits: not only ensuring the maintenance of our physical environment but

also augmenting social, academic, physical and financial welfare of students.

4. CHAPS Connects: in promoting the association, the exchange of ideas, and a connection with the wider campus, a number of activities would be initiated to help raise awareness about CHAPS. In addition to that, a bi-monthly newsletter to be electronically distributed would help to assist with council-student interaction, information sharing and good student governance.

Sincerely, A. Bruce.

MISS AURELIA

BRUCE

As a student body I believe we all benefit from our shifting roles and national backgrounds. We bring a different perspective to our classes and Cavehill in general and I can bring that to the council. I will seek to ad-vance the image of the Postgraduate student as the “Mature Student.” As Faculty Representative for the faculty of Humanities & Education I intend to:

• Rally for: ü Taught Masters Programmes should be ‘Taught’. ü Timeframe for feedback on assignments to be set ü Early Publishing of Booklists and increased library resources

• Seek to find solutions to problems voiced by my colleagues in every sphere.

Concerns about fees; academics, student rights etc.

• Seek to improve part-time job opportunities for Post Graduate students in the Faculty of Humanities and Education

• Seek the placement of Lockers in the Postgraduate Building

• Ensure better and more efficient collaboration between Faculty and Stu-dents

• Assist in timely communication of information to the faculty members and

postgraduates in general All of these and whatever else is necessary throughout my tenure to im-prove upon existing structures through meaningful discussion and collabo-ration with the necessary authorities.
