HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT COURSE

FOR YOUIt is simple, we’ve organised all of our courses by subject area and ‘level’ so that you can find the course that you are interested in really quickly.

We’ve also got course factsheets available on our website, so that you can find out more about what they include and where they could take you.

A GUIDE TO COURSE LEVELS

SHORT AND TASTER COURSES We understand that you might like to ‘try before you buy,’ so why not enrol on one of our short and taster courses first to see if you like it, then you can progress onto the next level. Our short and taster courses last no more than 10 weeks.

LEVEL 1 - ENTRY AND BEGINNER These courses don’t usually require any prior knowledge of a subject and they will help you to learn the basics. Level 1 courses are usually a stepping-stone to further study.

LEVEL 2 - INTERMEDIATE Designed to help you build on your skills at level 1, our level 2 intermediate courses require more study commitment and will help to secure your knowledge.

LEVEL 3 - ADVANCED Advanced, or level 3 courses will develop a detailed level of skills, knowledge and experience in a chosen subject. They will usually have individual entry requirements.

HIGHER AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES Designed for those looking to study on an HNC, HND, a degree or for those looking to obtain professional qualifications in their current role for example; CIPD and CMI. You must have relevant qualifications to gain entry onto these programmes, Our HE courses are amongst the lowest priced in the region and you can apply for a loan to cover the tuition fee, meaning you don’t have to pay the fee up front.

LOLA ATKINSON

MANAGING HER WAY TO A BETTER FUTURE

Thanks to the College, I have been able to create and launch my own

company... I now have the business bug

I nvesting some of her limited time into part-time study has paid dividends for former student Lola Atkinson as she

launches multiple businesses following the completion of the CMI Level 7 Diploma in Strategic Leadership & Management. We had a catch up with Lola to find out how her life has changed since she left.

“Over the years I have always enjoyed studying whilst continuing to work and bring up my daughter and this course was chosen to enhance my professional management career. From beginning the course, my ultimate aim was to achieve Chartered Manager Status.”

Lola found that she was able to use the skills that she learned throughout the course to develop a strategy, business plan and business model for her own business which was successfully launched towards the end of the course.

She added, “I love learning and I'm always looking to improve and develop professionally, and my future plans include achieving a full MBA. However for the next year with the launch of my business I plan to take a year out from advanced study so that I can concentrate on developing and growing the company.”

One of the other benefits of studying was working alongside like-minded people. Lola found this to be a motivational factor, helping each other to achieve.

“I really enjoyed meeting other mature students, especially those who were in the same position as me, working full time and bringing up children while studying at this level. We all tried to keep each

other motivated and supported each other throughout the course. At times it was difficult trying to juggle everything, especially committing to the number of hours research needed for each assignment but with dedication, focus, hard work and commitment anything is possible and you only get out what you put in. I've made some great friends on the course and I know we will stay in touch for many years to come.”

“Thanks to the college I have been able to create and launch my own company which I probably wouldn't have done had I not completed this course. I have advanced business and management skills and I'm able to research topics more thoroughly as well as presenting my work in a far more superior and professional standard. The tutors have been superb, all experts in their own fields, with the necessary practical experience to be able to help students apply theory to real life situations.”

Since completing the course Lola has developed and launched two businesses. One business was created following the marketing module when during this time she developed her marketing plan and the second businesses, which focuses on valeting and cleaning, now employs three members of staff with expected plans to grow even further in the very near future. So keep an eye out for Goddess SOS Beauty & Lifestyle Lounge and Goddess SOS Cleaning Services, and perhaps more new initiatives from our very own Goddess of the business world.

LINDA ROWELL

CARING LINDA USES HER EXPERIENCE TO CARE FOR OTHERS

I just wanted to help others as I’ve helped my mum, and

now I do it for a living!

L inda, was born in America, and moved to Sunderland with her British husband 16 years ago, to live

in Ryhope. Linda’s family have connexions to the care industry back in America.

Her brothers run a care company. This has always made the industry appealing to her. What makes the skills within the care sector even more important to Linda is for the care of her mum. Linda’s mum suffers from dementia, so she’s got a particular empathy with those affected by the condition.

Whilst unemployed, Linda started a six week care course at Sunderland College earlier this year to prepare for being a carer following a referral from her local job centre.

During the course, Linda gained the skills and knowledge that she needed, alongside a recognised qualification. With her newly gained skills, Linda was able to find employment at Barnes Court care home in Sunderland, where she works 22 hours per week as a carer.

Linda loves her job and finds it very rewarding helping the residents. She loves it so much that she is now completing a course in Dementia Awareness with the College.

Linda said: “I just wanted to help others as I’ve helped my mum, and now I do it for a living!”

You too can change your future with Sunderland College, see our Health & Social Care courses on page 9 to find out more.

HELP WITH COSTSLEVEL 3 COURSESWithin this guide there are two fees listed against courses at Level 3 or above. Tuition Fee A applies to students who are aged 19-23, and studying at Level 3. These courses are partly funded through the Skills Funding Agency. Tuition Fee B applies to any student who is 24+ as they are no longer funded through the Skills Funding Agency and therefore full course fees will apply.

Students can choose to apply for a loan to cover the cost of their course or can opt to pay the fee themselves. See the section below regarding 24+ Advanced Learning Loans for further details.

24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANSChanges to the way further education courses are funded for students aged 24+ studying at Level 3 or above came into effect on 1st August 2013. Students who are 24 or over, on the first day of their course, studying a qualification at Level 3 or above will now be able to apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to cover the cost of their course, similar to arrangements for higher education students.

Potential students can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan via www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans. For further information please contact the Welfare Team.

Of course you don’t need to take out a loan, you can choose to pay the fee up front if you prefer. For further information on loans please contact the Welfare Team.

FEE REMISSIONIf the course you would like to study has a in the ‘help with costs’ column then the course could be FREE through fee remission depending on your circumstances.

If you are 24 or over (on the first day of your course) studying a course at Level 3 or above then fee remission does not apply.

If you are unemployed and plan to seek a job after the course, then you will normally not have to pay tuition, registration or examination fees, provided that you satisfy one of the following conditions to receive fee remission:

LIAM SHERRIFF

DRIVE AND AMBITION MEANS SUCCESS FOR LIAM

I have been able to completely change my life and now I get to

change other people’s by helping them to stay fit and healthy

L iam trained to become an engineer from 2004 to 2006, and then began working in an office based

role, in Newcastle, in an ambulance control room dealing with emergency calls. Liam’s real interest however, was sport, health and fitness.

He was then recommended by a friend, who had completed a fitness to music course, to enrol on a course at Sunderland College.

Liam has since completed his fitness instructing level 2 course at Sunderland College and has a personal training level 3 certificate. He has recently started his own fitness business, running boot-camps, delivering one to one personal training sessions and training groups of people across the city.

Liam’s work does not stop at keeping people fit, he helps them to live a healthy lifestyle, giving people advice on healthy eating and supplements.

He said: “I never thought it was possible to combine something you love to do with work, I have been able to do just that.”

“I am so pleased I completed the courses at Sunderland College, I have been able to completely change my life and now I get to change other people’s by helping them to stay fit and healthy. It is the most rewarding job, every day is different and fun. Having my own business and being my own boss is even better. I knew I was never cut out for office work, my office is outdoors running bootcamps or in the gym training with clients and I could not be happier.”

Liam recently married his partner Michelle, who is also a personal trainer, he explained that he and his wife are extremely competitive when it comes to sport and fitness and push each other on to run that little bit further or complete another set of repetitions.

He said: “Michelle and I train together but we always set each other challenges! I am competitive, that’s the sportsman in me. We try to outdo each other in the number of people we recruit to our boot camps, I think that is the secret to my success I am driven and ambitious.”

For details of sport courses, see page 10.
