Perhaps that was the mindset of the people who recounted to Jesus the terrible fate of the Galileans: these people must have been terrible sinners to die in such horrible circumstances. Jesus, however, asks them not to focus on sin and guilt but to focus on repentance, on having a change of heart. He urges them to change their view of how they perceive themselves and how they perceive God. This is what happened to Moses when he saw the burning bush. Aſter having seen the burning bush, he is described as changing his point of view of how he saw things. He turned and changed direcon; he experienced a change of heart, metanoia. And when God saw that Moses had turned aside and changed direcon, God called out and spoke to Moses. Perhaps this is what Jesus was also trying to tell the people: that is, not to focus on guilt and sins but to focus on making a change of heart, like Moses, and on being open to the voice and words of God. Jesus teaches that God is not a God of judgment and death but a God of redempon and life. This is also in the parable in today’s gospel of a person who for three years had waited for a fig tree to fruit, with none appearing. The number three in the bible is a sign of completeness and totality. Thus, in having given the fig tree the totality of me to bear fruit with no result, it was only reasonable and just to ask for it to be cut down. However, the gardener in the parable, the very one who knows the fig tree the best, pleads for the tree to be spared. He promises he will do all in his power to assist the fig tree to bear fruit. But he adds it is up to the fig tree. Interesngly, it seems that the main focus for the gardener is the fig tree itself, not the fruit. In fact, the gardener wants to have no part to play in cung down the tree. God, like the gardener, is doing everything for us to lead us to the fullness of life, but the choice is ours: it is the choice to change our minds, our hearts and wills to believe in and respond to God’s love for us. God calls us every day to believe in God's love for each and every one of us. God is doing everything; we just need to open our hearts, to change our hearts, metanoia. Let us not cut down, but believe in God's love and to love as God loves us. How often we judge a person by their appearance, their speech, or their behaviour. After having seen the burning bush, he is described as changing his point of view of how he saw things. He turned and changed direction; he experienced a change of heart, metanoia. And when God saw that Moses had turned aside and changed direction, God called out and spoke to Moses. Perhaps this is what Jesus was also trying to tell the people: that is, not to focus on guilt and sins but to focus on making a change of heart, like Moses, and on being open to the voice and words of God. Jesus teaches that God is not a God of judgment and death but a God of redemption and life. This is also in the parable in today’s gospel of a person who for three years had waited for a fig tree to fruit, with none appearing. The number three in the bible is a sign of completeness and totality. Thus, in having given the fig tree the totality of time to bear fruit with no result, it was only reasonable and just to ask for it to be cut down. However, the gardener in the parable, the very one who knows the fig tree the best, pleads for the tree to be spared. He promises he will do all in his power to assist the fig tree to bear fruit. But he adds it is up to the fig tree. Interestingly, it seems that the main focus for the gardener is the fig tree itself, not the fruit. In fact, the gardener wants to have no part to play in cutting down the tree. Third Sunday of Lent 24

th March 2019

Peter goes to a boarding school in the Solomon Islands which has experienced water shortages for 60 years. Previously, students would have to walk kilometres each day in search of clean water, which was particularly challenging for Peter who is living with a disablity. With Caritas Australia’s support, the school has created a new reliable water system. With more free time and fewer illnesses caused by dirty water, Peter can fulfil his hope of focusing on his studies, providing him with brighter future.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help young people with disabilities gain access to clean water in

the Solomon Islands, providing hope for a brighter future. Lives change when we all give 100%.

You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting

www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

A New Catholic Church for Gosnells

Archbishop Patrick Clune blessed and officially opened the new building on 2nd March 1919. The ‘Record’ of March 8, 1919 described the opening ceremony in most

dramatic and vivid detail. …………..the story continues

…….. Hitherto, he continued, no building in the district had been specially dedicated to the worship of Almighty God - they had to use buildings devoted to secular purposes with the result that there was a lack of that reverence and worship which was necessary to a worthy and fitting adoration of the Living God. In their new church, under the patronage of St. Munchin, they would have a suitable place where they could come to worship God - a place where they would bring their

children to be baptised, where the Living God would be brought down upon the altar and where they would have the application of the Sacraments.

When they came to the Church they would remember that it was not an ordinary hall or meeting place where they could laugh and jest but that it was the House of God. The one thing that distinguished the Catholic Church from every other Church is that they have the Most High God in the Tabernacle under the appearance of a little Bread. At Mass the Sacrifice of Calvary is renewed, and the Victim of Calvary is offered in their behalf, and when they join in the celebration of that wonderful mystery they would receive the great gifts which God pours down on those who assist at Mass

He congratulated them on having erected such a handsome Church. He doubted if there was a handsomer altar in any of the country churches of the Commonwealth. He congratulated the architect and contractor on the excellence of their work. The Catholics of the district should be filled with gratitude to God, and pleasure to themselves in having a church erected in such a commanding position.

Rosaries For Vocations This Lent, join with Catholics throughout the Archdiocese of Perth in praying for Vocations! To join in, simply pray the rosary every Thursday this Lent for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. This campaign will culminate in a communal rosary at parishes across the Archdiocese prior to Mass on Holy Thursday, the day that our Lord established the priesthood and instituted the Holy Eucharist. Know that your prayers do make a difference, and that our Lord will not be outdone in generosity!
