Things To Know About MequonMequon ( mek-won) is a city in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It had a population of 21,823 at the 2000 census, and an estimated popu-lation of 23,739 in July 2009. The mayor is Curt Gielow. In July 2005, CNN’s Money Magazine listed Mequon 19th among its 100 Best Small Cities in the United States, ranked jointly with Thiensville, a village com-pletely surrounded by Mequon. The area was originally inhabited by Na-tive Americans. By the early 19th century, the Potawatomi occupied land west of the Milwaukee River, while the Menominee lived between the Mil-waukee River and Lake Michigan. European trappers, explorers and trad-ers used the Milwaukee River through the middle of what is now Mequon as a means of transportation. The name “Mequon” is thought to have come from the Native-American word “Emikwaan” or “Miguan,” meaning ladle. This refers to how the Milwaukee River curves like a ladle in the Mequon area.

Famous For The Wind Point Light House And The Friki TikiThe Wind Point Lighthouse has become a familiar icon of the Racine area, thanks to the many artists and photographers who have captured its beauty. Built in 1880 -- at a total cost of $100,000 -- the 112-foot lighthouse helped make Racine a safe harbor. Before the lighthouse’s beacon began guiding Lake Michigan boaters, a lone tree served as a landmark for sailors o! the Point. Today, the lighthouse buildings serve as municipal o"ces for the Village of Wind Point. Though the Lighthouse interior is not open to the public, visitors can stroll the grounds and enjoy the view. Visit the Friki Tiki, Rac-ine’s best view , all outdoor bar and grill, live music, summer rocks around here! Home of the Doggie Happy Hour.
