One of the values that we get from our advisory committee members is feedback on topics that impact the success of our programs and the preparation of our students. Each advisory group met separately and discussed such things as employment opportunities, skill set measurement, industry exams, licensures, and certifications specific to the particular program. Additionally, opportunities for internships, practicums, apprenticeships, and survey responses were gathered as the meeting concluded.

Since the beginning of the Fall 2013 semester, the Learning Resource Centers District-wide have conducted 17 instructional sessions with more than 350 participants. In addition, 71 class orienta-tion session sessions have been conducted with 984 students attending.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY TRANSFORMATION PLAN Information Technology

Transformation PlanDATA CENTER MODERNIZATION The District is currently in Phase IB of the Information Technology Transformation Plan. In this phase, the WCCCD Data Center will be modernized.

Data Center Modernization Phase IB Status Update

New Dell “Blade Servers” have arrived and will be installed

using a “Virtual Server Architecture.” These servers will offer the District better performance while using only a quarter of the current space.

The Data Center will receive a dedicated generator. The

generator will assist the District with providing power and continuity of operations in the event of a power shortage.

THE SCHOOL OF CONTINUING EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Michael Poole represented the District at the SER Metro-Detroit’s 2013 Amigos de

SER Business Recognition Luncheon. Ser Metro–Detroit is a multi-service Michigan Corporation committed to the development and utilization of the nation’s workforce. Mr. Poole also attended the 2013 Michigan Association of School Board Members Conference in Lansing, Michigan. Those attending along with the Michigan Legislature, and the Michigan Department of Education Superintendent Michael Flanagan, agreed to the common core standards for Michigan. The common core standards, with aligned assessments, are one of the most critically important foundations for raising student achievement in Michigan.

WCCCD’s School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development is pleased to announce that the Cyber Defender Training Program will launch January 2014. WCCCD is one of only a few Veteran Affairs approved Cyber Security Training Programs in the Unit-ed States. The Cyber Center is part of a national effort to train cyber defenders to protect our country’s critical infrastructure. To date, WCCCD has assessed and accepted 12 veterans and four non-veterans into the first cohort.

CYBER DEFENDER TRAINING PROGRAM

During the week of October 28 – November 2, 2013 the District served 660 participants by partnering

with 18 community organizations.

DIVISION OF STUDENT SERVICES

WCCCD team members attended the 39th annual MAEOPP conference this week in Columbus, Ohio. The team took away good information on how to improve the program and further engage TRIO students.

Two students who were advised on how to transfer and continue their education after graduating from WCCCD visited the TRIO store to cash in their hard earned trio bucks for cool prizes. Students who participate in TRIO activities and attend advising sessions earn trio bucks to spend in the TRIO store.

Our new Graduation Progress System (GPS) helps students and advisors monitor progress towards degree and certificate completion.

WCCCD students Felicia Kemp, David Jackson, Nolan Bridges, Bernard Edwards and Kenuiel Nunley are recipients of the Perkins Scholarship award for the Fall 2013 semester. The Career and Technical Programs Support Services Perkins Scholarship provides assistance with tuition, textbooks and transportation costs to eligible students. Students must be pursuing a Career and Technical Program and meet one of the special population categories.

The TRIO Program took a group of students to the Eastern Michigan University-Detroit for a MACRAO Workshop. It provides students with information about the transfer of courses from one college to another.

Computer Information Systems is one of the fastest growing fields in the nation. Employment opportunities for analysts, programmers, database administrators, support specialists, web designers, and web developers abound. In partnership with Compuware, the School of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Division of Educational Affairs, the Downtown and Western campuses hosted a Careers With Compuware exploration program on Thursday. Executives with Compuware and WCCCD Computer Information Systems faculty informed students about current and emerging jobs in technology.

CAREERS WITH COMPUWARE

ASSESSMENT AWARENESS DAY The Eighth Annual Assessment Awareness Day was held at the Downtown Campus this week. Dr. Debraha Watson delivered the keynote address on strategies for assessing student learning outcomes in general education and career programs to more than 100 faculty. Faculty shared techniques for improving their class syllabus, classroom management, and authentic assessment. This faculty-driven program, which draws faculty participation from all campuses, offers faculty the opportunity to have ongoing conversations about what students are learning in the classroom.

WAYNE RESA

The Downriver Campus hosted Wayne RESA Career and Technical Education’s (CTE) county-wide training workshop. CTE instructors and counselors from around Wayne and Monroe County participated in a one-day workshop focused on new curriculum, articulation opportunities and program outcomes.

Diane Gonzalez attended the 2013 Amigos De Ser Business Recognition Luncheon. One of the students recognized was Luis Leija, former Automotive Technology student. He is employed by Jorgensen Ford as a fill-time mechanic trainee.

MICHIGAN INSTITUTE FOR PUBLIC SAFETY EDUCATION

The Downriver Campus hosted the Wayne County Heritage Chapter meeting of American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). The Downriver Campus has had a long standing relationship with this chapter of AARP and we are glad to be the site for their monthly meetings.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF RETIRED PERSONS

The Downriver Campus hosted the State of Michigan Secretary of State Mobile unit. This fully functional Secretary of State office had the ability to process title transfers, instant

titles, vehicle and boat registration renewals, driver's license and state Id renewals, and driver's records.

SECRETARY OF STATE MOBILE UNIT The Michigan Institute for Public Safety Education (MIPSE) has taken delivery of a forcible entry door simulator for the Fire Protection Technology Program. The simulator allows students to actually force open a secured door instead of just going through the motions.

MIPSE hosted the monthly United States Coast Guard Auxiliary meeting.

10TH ANNIVERSARY

With the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), many observers have made a fresh assessment of where America’s homeland security enterprise stands today. In a way to support and assist the DHS, the International Programs and Global Partnerships Department has designed measures to ensure that our students are in compliance. One of the measures is the Mid-Semester Registration Audit. This is to ensure that students who register for the required 12 credit hours do not drop the classes after being confirmed to DHS via the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a web-accessible database for monitoring information about exchange visitors, international students and scholars subject to this program. Students who are in violation are called in for advising. For students that are unable to be contacted due to change of address or incorrect phone numbers, the department makes notes in their SEVIS record as required by the DHS.

ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE Melani Bender represented the Division of Finance and Administration at the MI ACE Network Women of Color Collaborative Luncheon at Oakland University. This interactive forum provided emerging women leaders with the opportunity to: Obtain leadership skills in critical areas such as crisis response and strategic planning. Gain a better understanding of the inherent rewards and challenges of senior-level administrative positions, including the college or university presidency, through exposure to outstanding women leaders who share their experiences and serve as role models. The keynote speaker was Monica Emerson, Board of Trustee Member for Oakland University. She advises senior leaders on strategies, programs and processes that optimize individual and organization performance.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM PLANNING

This has been an exciting week on the program planning front! Several new pilot programs will start in the Spring 2014 semester

NEW PROGRAMS FOR SPRING 2014 ANNOUNCED!

 

The Auto Body Technology Program will prepare students for employment in the auto body industry and the numerous jobs available throughout the Detroit Metropolitan area. The program is offered at the Eastern Campus.

 

This is a comprehensive certifica-tion program allowing students to seek five certifications including Patient Care Technician, EKG Technician and Phlebotomy. The program will be offered at the Northwest Campus.

AUTO BODY TECHNOLOGY DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR

The certificate in Database Management prepares students to design and implement the in-frastructure for business solutions using database and programming tools. The program will be offered at the Northwest Campus.

The Health Information Technology Program prepares graduates to perform tasks relat-ed to the use, analysis, validation, presentation, abstracting, coding, storage, security, retrieval, quality measurement and control of health care data.

HEALTH INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Associate of Applied Science Program in Bio-Medical Equipment Repair Technology is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge of high technology equipment used in hospitals, clinics and in the offices of medical doctors.

UNIVERSITIES ON CAMPUS Students at the Northwest Campus had an opportunity to meet with several college and university recruiters to discuss program offerings after they graduate from WCCCD. Those visiting the campus included Bethune-Cookman University, Central Michigan University, Oakland University, and Rochester College.

Faculty from the Dental Hygiene Program attended the Michigan Association of Dental Hygiene Educators Annual Meeting in Port Huron, Michigan. Jo Ann Allen Nyquist co-chaired the Dental Hygiene Program Directors Meeting during the roundtable networking session.

DENTAL HYGIENE FACULTY ON THE MOVE

The dental hygiene students attended the Student American Dental Hygiene Annual Meeting in Port Huron, Michigan. The day consisted of educational sessions on “Patient Education Techniques and How Adults Learn.” This was an opportunity for students to network with other students from Michigan colleges.

DENTAL STUDENTS ON THE MOVE...

Ms. Nyquist met with Shelby Berger, 2010 WCCCD dental hygiene graduate and Dr. Omar Steenbergh, DDS, both from Western Wayne Family Health Centers, for the purpose of developing a partnership to place dental hygiene students at their center to provide clinical dental hygiene services for children.

DEVELOPING PARTNERSHIPS

DISTRICT PUBLIC SAFETY SECURITY FOR OUR FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS The Police Authority is committed to keeping the WCCCD community a safe and secure place for all of our students, faculty and staff. One service the department provides is safety escorts. The purpose of this program is to provide walking escorts for faculty, staff, students, and visitors. The escorts are provided by police authority officers, campus safety officers and student safety corps members.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY FAMILY TRADITIONS ART AND ESSAY CONTEST Dr. Robinson represented the District at the

Grosse Pointe’s Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event. The venue was reserved exclusively for Chamber members to develop linkages within the association. Dr. Robinson shared the District’s initiatives and The Completion Agenda.

The University Center staff and members of the Eastside Advisory Council reviewed the Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods elementary school students’ art and essay submissions for the District’s annual Holiday Family Traditions Art and Essay Contest. The winners will ride the WCCCD’s fire trucks in the Grosse Pointe Santa Clause Parade, the day after Thanksgiving.

ON THE MOVE...

MICHIGAN GREEN INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION The Western Campus was the platform for the Michigan Green Industry Association (MGIA) Certified Applicators and Registered Technicians (CARTS) training workshop. The MGIA, consulting with the Michigan Department of Agriculture, offered an intensive one-day training. The workshop included hands-on training for participants to become certified pesticide applicators and registered technicians.

The Western Campus, in partnership with the Area Water and Sewage Departments Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) hosted a management training seminar. Keynote speaker Dr. Lewis Bender from the Michigan Public Service Institute equipped participants with manage-ment tools to motivate and facilitate their teams.

TECHNICAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Western Campus, in partnership with the Belleville Area and Romulus Chambers of Commerce, hosted a Positive Leadership Workshop. The workshop was presented by Glenda Haskell, Individual and Group Coach, Owner of Full Spectrum Career Success.

POSITIVE LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP

The Western Campus hosted Arbor Hospice’s Employee Forum. This forum was presented by Gloria Danna Brooks, President and CEO of Arbor Hospice. This was an excellent workshop for their staff to engage in question and answering sessions regarding their agency.

DEFERRED MAINTENANCE

OFFICE OF ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY

The Continuous Quality Improvement Audit Center collects, reviews and conducts monthly reconciliations and on-going audits of all District data. A systematic approach is used to procure data from multiple sources, allowing for collective knowledge through accountability and transparency. The District reviewed the grade submission process for full and part -time faculty for summer fiscal year 2012 and 2013. As the analysis reveals, there was a 13 day reduction in the process therefore enhancing the service to our students.

A new Student Services information desk has been installed at the Northwest Campus. The new desk offers a larger area, as well as an ADA service counter to better assist our students.

Cross walk and road markings were installed at the Eastern Campus. These are instrumental in conveying messages and assisting the District with ensuring safety to students, faculty and staff.
