I’m so honoured and inspired to be part of this exciting project to make West Princes Street Gardens world class and accessible

to all members of the community. Edinburgh, as Scotland’s capital, deserves to have a space that makes a statement about the city’s status as a welcoming, diverse, historic and forward-thinking destination for all to enjoy. The Quaich Project’s ambition is to create a space that says something about us as a nation – a place we can all be proud of.

West Princes Street Gardens has a wonderful history of individuals who have been inspired by the natural beauty of the gardens and its iconic location under Castle Rock. We now have an opportunity to make West Princes Street Gardens a truly inspiring cultural and recreational space.

By becoming a Champion of the Quaich you will be joining us in writing the next chapter of West Princes Street Gardens’ history – The Quaich Project – a space for all in the heart of Edinburgh.’

WELCOME

JULES HASTON DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

THE QUAICH PROJECT

The Quaich Project is a partnership between the Ross Development Trust and the City of Edinburgh Council,

representing the next evolutionary chapter in the story of one of Scotland’s most famous landmark locations: West Princes Street Gardens.

Referencing the area’s importance as the previous site of the man-made Nor’ Loch, The Quaich Project takes its name from a traditional Highland ‘sharing cup’. Typically a shallow, two-handled cup crafted from wood or metal, quaichs are often treasured, personal items – proudly gifted from one generation to the next – and used to celebrate special occasions together.

The Quaich Project is one of Europe’s most significant green space developments and will see the gardens emerge as one of the most acclaimed city gardens in the world on par with projects such as New York’s High Line and Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay.

Our vision is to reimagine the gardens as a space for all to celebrate and enjoy in new ways. It will have dynamic architectural designs and world-class facilities, whilst always remaining respectful to the people, wildlife, landscape and heritage of Scotland’s capital.

MAKING OUR VISION A REALITY

Nestled under the iconic Castle Rock, the gardens have undergone many changes and evolved over the years. There is a

great legacy of individuals who were prepared to galvanise support and commit to enhancing the features of this very special place.

Efforts to make the gardens truly magnificent and world-class have already begun. The Ross Fountain was the first restoration completed within The Quaich Project and was chosen for its unique reflection on Scottish heritage. Having been without water for several years, the

Fountain was carefully restored in 2018 thanks to funding from Edinburgh World Heritage, The Springford Family Trust, and a number of other private individuals.

But we have an enormous task ahead. To be successful we will need the active support and financial investment from individuals who share our passion and vision to make this an internationally recognised space for all in the heart of Edinburgh.

We need to raise £25 million to make this happen.

THE PAVILION

The new Pavilion will be a stunning and contemporary replacement of the Ross Bandstand, a space in the heart of

Edinburgh that can truly inspire, engage and entertain the city. The new Pavilion will create a multi-functional space for community activities throughout the year.

The Pavilion can accommodate a number of larger celebrations that are very much a part of Edinburgh’s cultural fabric. Edinburgh’s Hogmanay and the Edinburgh International Festival’s closing fireworks concert are signature events that will continue to be part of West Princes Street Gardens but the improved infrastructure will mean minimal disruption to users of the gardens during their delivery.

A SPACE FOR ALL

The Welcome Centre will provide excellent access to the gardens from Princes Street. Accessibility is a key feature of The Quaich

Project to ensure that everybody can easily use and enjoy the space.

Space inside the Welcome Centre will be flexible to provide a community facility alongside a catering outlet, toilets and exhibition space. Looking out over the Amphitheatre and Pavilion, the Welcome Centre will also provide stunning view points up to the Castle and Old Town.

The Family Area will define the area of land west of the Ross Fountain, stretching between the existing children’s playpark

and the gates of St. Cuthbert’s Church. The Family Area will provide a unique and inspiring urban space for all ages that Edinburgh can be proud of.

Providing a fantastic view of Castle Rock and the Ross Fountain, the Family Area provides flexible opportunities for a wide variety of activities including play, performance, and relaxation.

This prime city centre location will be a space where friendships will be formed and memories made by the local community and visitors alike.

AMPHITHEATRE

With the glazed façade open to the gardens, the Pavilion will serve as a stage for outdoor performances

with a community focus.

Set within the heart of West Princes Street Gardens, the Amphitheatre will allow audiences to experience a range of performances whilst enjoying Edinburgh’s outdoor landscape and landmarks. The Amphitheatre will have the capacity to seat 2,000 and is designed to offer good lines of sight for seated and standing audiences, with landscaping that allows visitors to continue enjoying the green space and garden setting.
