Champs Wherever We Go "Have you heard that the Homecoming game has been moved from Carroll to Jefferson?" That was the question everyone was asking on that rainy afternoon. The rumor was confirmed at the Pep Rally held at the end of the day. But the day was only beginning. Radio stations had to be called, and directions had to be given in an effort to inform everyone of the change. Meanwhile, at Jefferson, people were busy preparing for the parade. There were floats to create, balloons to be blown up, and banners to be finished. The hard work paid off, and at 6:30 the 1979 Homecoming Parade began. Those marching were greeted by friendly waves from people living in the neighborhood. The Sophomore class won awards for " Best Divisional Float" and " Best Banner," while Mrs. Naughton's senior advisory was named " Best Homeroom Float. " At 8:00 the game began. The stands overflowed with students, parents and a large number of alumni who were in attendance. The temperatures were low, but the spirits were high as the crowd cheered CJ on to a 14-12 victory over GDL rival Jefferson.

Dance For Victory The mood was set - Everyone's mind was sailing away to the music of Kros Fyre the night of the 1979 Homecoming Dance. The evening came to a close on the "smooth seas" of the Lakeview Palladium. It was filled with laughter, warm embrac~s, the memory of a football victory and a past week of spirit and pride.

'81 Respects Tradition

This year's powderpuff football game was quite an experience. The juniors put up 'a real fight but out of respect for tradition allowed a senior victory. With the help of our coach, Kevin Kavanaugh, we succeeded in enforcing some strategic plays against the seniors. Amidst the mud our spirit showed through and next year our team will be even stronger, so beware class of '82, for history has a way of repeating itself.

Super Seniors Safe In The Arms Of Melt Victory On Monday, November 12, the SUPER SENSATIONAL SENIOR team (known as JOHN'S JOCKS - coached by Mr. John Zaidain) dominated the junior team in the annual powderpuff football game. JOHN'S JOCKS left the juniors in utter embarrassment when they scored their first touchdown in the first quarter and followed with a 2 point conversion for a score of 8-0. JOHN'S JOCKS scored again in the second half on a safety. Out of pity, JOHN'S JOCKS allowed the juniors 2 points to their credit, by a safety in the fourth quarter to make the final score 10-2. SENIORS WIN! The game was touch football but it turned out to be a rough match of strength, will, and wit. There was no doubt in the Senior's minds who would be victorious. JOHN'S JOCKS proved to all who were there, on that long cold day, the the SENIORS ARE #1!!!

Jump The Net To Success

The Women's Tennis team served its way through a successful season of hard work and determination, finishing with a 7-7 competition record. Sunsets and three set matches were not an unusual combination on many long evenings of play. Morale was maintained- by teammates cheering each other on and earning milkshakes for 6-0, 6-° victories. All of us were proud of our accomplishments as a group. One being our number one doubles team of Kathy Kompar and Sherrie Marsh, who were runners-up in the Miami Valley Tennis Tournament. Most Improved Player awards went to Karen and Kathy Sifferlen. The Most Valuable Player award went to Anita Suttmiller. The future looks bright for Womens Tennis here at C-J. Quality players are all that remain to meet the 1980-81 school year with continued successes throughout the coming season.

Food For Thought Have you ever thought about what you eat? Did you ever go into the cafeteria and ask for an extra package of NaCL (salt)?, or how about a glass of C12H2P11

(sugar) free Tab? Or a container of yogurt cooled by frozen Hp (water)? Or the cottage cheese with the green foliage on the side? Haven't we all thought of that possible pestiforous material that we engorged? We, however, have all survived these nutritional atrocities and satiate our hankering for nourishment.

Christmas Is The Gift

Of Being Together Over 150 couples gathered at Wegerzyn's Garden Center for the 1979 Christmas Dance, "You Decorated My Life" Decorations were provided by the Social Committee. They included centerpieces of Santa Claus jars filled with peppermints (which disappeared from tables quicker than usual) and candy cane favors. The music of "Cobra" filled the dance floor, and the sounds of friends enjoying themselves rang out through the wintery night. Even though it was cold outside, the warmth of the holiday spirit made it a truly memorable evening.

C-J Eagles 'Shoot To The Top The 1979-80 Varsity Basketball Team gave C-J its best season ever. The team defeated its first two opponents and later crushed three local rivals, Wilbur Wright, Stivers-Patterson, and Meadowdale. This year C-J was ranked #1 in the Journal Herald Area Rating for several weeks with an end of the season rating of #2. The team placed fourth for the state of Ohio in the UPI Prep Poll. The flying Eagles were seeded #2 for their district and the state tournament and won their second straight Sectional Championship.

Highlighting the season were the Eagle Players themselves. Senior Steve Block became the first player to score 1000 points during his career at C-J. He set a single game scoring record of 34 pOints against Fairborn Baker and was named the Most Valuable Player. Steve and senior Mike Edmonds were 1 st team selections in the GDL. Mike was also named the Best Rebounder for the Eagles. Junior Jim Powers was awarded the Best Free Throw Shooter title and senior Chris Hunter earned the Most Improved Player Award. One eagle strongly afflicted with Eaglemania was the Most Spirited Player, senior AI Busse.

Eagle Spirit was displayed in full array by the fans who gladly raised their spirit fingers and voices in rousing cheers of support for this successful team. Clete Richardson summed up the season by saying, "This team has been a real family. We've shared hours working, playing and showing what it means to "Fly like an Eagle. "

Eagle Wrestlers Pull Together

The 1979-1980 wrestling team opened their season with many new and inexperienced members. With six varsity wrestlers graduating last year, the team was left with only four returning lettermen, three of which were seniors; Doug Smith, Co-Captains; Fred Rau and Jim Clark, the only four year varsity wrestler.

The Eagle wrestlers pulled together with unity and team spirit under the guidance and young new talents of Coach Michael Smith.

For a "young" team the Eagles fared extremely well in all competitions. As a team their major victories were: pinning Dunbar 56-21, placing 2nd in the all Catholic Invitational, 3rd in the Oakwood Invitational, 4th in the C-J Invitational and placing 2nd in the G.D.L. Individual accomplishments were achieved by District Qualifiers: Doug Smith, first year varsity wrestler Bob Roush, Fred Rau, who was named to the Journal Herald Honor Roll, and sophomore Phil Plummer who has been a District Qualifier in both of his years at C-J .

The 1979-1980 wrestling season proved to be a great learning experience for the entire team. As the seniors grew in a sense of leadership and discipline that they will carry throughout the rest of . their lives, the younger wrestlers grew in knowledge and experience which they will put forward to future seasons at C-J.

Effort Evens The Score For the first time in its history, the C-J Women's Basketball program consisted not only of the usual Varsity and Reserve teams but also a new Freshman squad. This was to accommodate the larger than expected number of girls who showed interest in the sport.

When the season began, the Varsity team was composed of three returning lettermen, several veteran Reserve players, and a few girls who were new to the sport this year. Despite the misleading record, there were some bright moments. Highlights of the season include two wins over GDL rival, Jefferson, an 18 point romp over West Carrollton, and an exciting game against Fairview in which senior Kim Adams sunk a basket with only two seconds left on the clock for a 48-46 Eagle victory. With the young Reserve and· Freshman players gaining experience and skill as they move up through the ranks, the future for the C-J Women looks hopeful.

When the girls look back on the season, they will remember jokes in the locker room, the time Mr. Cheslock put a dent in the filing cabinet, the joy after winning a game, the disappointment after losing one, and the spirit and friendship that comes from being a part of a team. But most of all, the girls should be proud of always putting forth their best effort, even when they weren't getting positive results. Perhaps the season could best be summed up in the words of senior Kathy Kremer when she said, "We tried."

Bobby Socks And Beyond

Contrary to popular belief, being a cheerleader doesn't only mean wearing a sweater and skirt with bobby socks and doing somersaults when the team is winning. A large majority of a C-J cheerleader's time has to be spent not only painting posters and hanging them up, but also selling ribbons, counting money, paying bills, baking cookies for the players, decorating the buses and locker room, planning pep rallies, and just simply thinking of new ideas and organizing activities to encourage school spirit. It requires endless devotion to be a C-J cheerleader because throughout the long sea~on, May-April, there are no victories, only the satisfaction of promoting spirit and supporting the team with a few "thank yous" here and there.

For the past couple of years, the coaches for cheerleading have changed every year. This has placed a great amount of responsibility on every cheerleader, especially the captains of each squad. During our regular summer practices we managed to raise the money to go to summer cheerleading camp. After four days and three nights of tiring activities, the reserve and two varsity squads learned about each other and many new ways to build up school spirit.

With the help of our coach, Sheri West, and going to camp, we learned that trying new ideas could be exciting rather than disappointing. The C-J crowd was a main inspiration and nothing could compare to the rewarding feeling a cheerleader has of accomplishing what she sets out to do - lead cheersl

"Hey J.C., J.C. You're Alright

By Me" For the cast, crew, and orchestra of Jesus Christ Superstar, the months of April and May were filled with rehearsals. Hours were spent building the set, memorizing the lines, blocking, singing, dancing, and generally having a good time. Each rehearsal began with Lori Fox leading us in warm-up exercises. Then it was time to go through Act I, Act II, or worst of all, both. During these times, we were instructed over and over again to CONCENTRATE and KEEP THE ENERGY UP! Despite some minor conflicts, on the whole those involved in the play developed a sense of family. There was always a word of encouragement, hug or smile to be shared. The cast often relieved tension and sore muscles with back rubs. We laughed about things like Caiphas singing Jesus' lines, our colorful female Herod, a missing apostle, our excessive stage make-up, and who could forget the exciting Jim Jones revival. All the work, criticism, laughter, and tears paid off when the three performances of Jesus Christ Superstar proved to be a Supershow for everyone.

A Goodnight Kiss? The first annual Mother-Son Dinner took place at C-J on April 18, 1980. Over 250 sons treated their mothers to a fine, Italian style dinner, complete with a choice of red or white wine, all catered by Anticoli's Restaurant. Entertainment for the evening was provided by C-J students, among them Kathy Kompar, who sang "Can't Smile Without You," accompanied by Scott Copeland on piano, Adam Votaw, who sang "Mothers, Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to be Cowboys," Cynthia Bailey, who sang "Evergreen," Carole Kompar, who sang "Annie's Song," accompanied by David Smith on guitar, Chris Rowlands, and David Smith, who combined their talents on "Beautiful," and "If You Could Read My Mind," and David and Chris joining their guitars and voices with Carole Kompar and Lia Ravestein in "Sunshine on my Shoulders," and "By My Side." All of these performers brought happy memories to the minds of the mothers and sons by way of the lyrics. At the end of the evening, after the flowers were all bought and the pictures were all taken, the mothers all proudly grasped their sons' arms, and walked in a stately manner to their cars on a carpet of love-laden clouds, treasuring in the back of their minds an evening full of love between them and their sons.

Dancing In The

Moonlight Creative efforts of the prom committee and the music of the group Sojourn helped make this year's prom memorable. Fresh roses in original centerpieces · were provided by committee members while a backdrop for portraits was designed by Pete Schubert in cooperation with Christine Wamsley. The dance was held at Kennedy Union, on the University of Dayton campus, the evening of May 10, 1980. All involved would agree with the theme of the prom, it truly was a marvelous night for a moon dance.

Swing Into Action

The record compiled by the Varsity Baseball Team was not overly impressive at nine wins, twelve losses and one tie, but in many of the games the men were leading up until the last few innings, losing in the end by one or two runs. The team did have its moments, however. It finished 2nd in the league on the heels of two very exciting "come from behind" victories over Carroll and Alter, both in the final innings. The team also defeated AAA power Stebbins, who went to the Regionals of the State Tournament. The Eagles lost in the first round of the tournament to a tough Oakwood club by a slim 3-2 margin.

Honor recipients were Kevin Miller and Greg Wenclewicz who were named to the second team All-Area Squad. Kevin, Greg, and Jim Moeder were named to the All Greater Dayton League Team.

The 1979-80 Women's Varsity Softball Team had a very successful season. Hard work, practicing in freezing cold weather, and team spirit enabled us to start the season with a 9 game winning streak and finishing with a 16-2 record. Team spirit really showed in the Fairmont East game. We were losing by a couple of runs early in the game. Our bench came alive. They helped the players get their act together and work like a team. It paid off. We won the game 9-6. Our bench was the backbone of our team. They helped us in every game. Their spirit and enthusiasm made the whole team proud that they were a C-J Eagle. The tournament game against Meadowdale was another example of the tremehdous spirit our bench had. During the 2nd inning, C-J gave up 12 unearned runs. It seemed as though all the players on the field gave up, but the bench didn't quit. We kept cheering and tried to lift each other up, tried to keep the players together. Yes, we lost that game but we found out how much being a team instead of individuals meant in winning or losing. This game meant a lot. For the Seniors it meant the end. Nothing left. No state. C-J softball careers practically over. Only 1 game left that really had any purpose and that was the Alter game which meant tieing or losing the GDL. For the juniors and sophomores there is always next year. Next year to win State, to be champions. We ended our season on a positive note by defeating Alter for a tie in the GDL. The Alter game was an example of how teamwork and great defensive plays prevailed. The Alter game was a tough battle, always ahead or behind by 1 run. A great defensive play probably the most important, was a fabulous catch made by Jody Spees in centerfield during the late innings of the game. Jody's catch enabled us to stay in the game. It meant Alter didn't score the tieing or winning run. It gave us another chance. Another chance for a tie in the GDL. We won that game in extra innings, the score 7-6. This win gave C-J a tie with Carroll for the GDL. Our last time of being together as a team was at the spring banquet where the following awards were presented to these players: MOST VALUABLE PLAYER - Rita Meyers, MOST IMPROVED PLAYER - Cathy Gaier, MOST SPIRITED PLAYER and SCHOLAR ATHLETE - Mary Nevius, HITTER OF THE YEAR - Collette Jackson, and MOST PROMISING RESERVE PLAYER - Theresa Gaier. We thank all our coaches and especially Mr. Jerry Raiff for all his time and energy he put into leading us to an exciting season.

Eagles Run With The Wind

On Their Wings The Men's Track team members responded to the challenge of a new season very well. The fact that five C-J records were broken this year was proof of their abilities. Performances from junior Tom McClosky in the long jump, freshman Trey Coleman in the 440-yard dash, and the 440-yard relay team of sophomore Mike Sargent, sophomore Charles Ingram, freshman Trey Coleman, and anchorman junior Roger Humphries, were high pOints of the track season. In addition, Roger also contributed his efforts to the 100 meter run, and the 220-yard dash. Roger reached the pinnacle of his season when he shattered the sectional record on the long jump, in spite of rainy weather conditions . .

As a team, the most impressive showings were at the Bellbrook Invitational, the District Meet, and the Sectional Meet. The team captured 2nd in all three of these events.

Seasonal Awards were received by sophomore Andy Weisman for Most Improved Distance Runner, Sophomore Charles Ingram for Most Improved Runner, and Junior Roger Humphries for Most Valuable Sprinter and Most Valuable Field Man.

5th At State As the members of the Women's Track Team learned this year, a good runner must be dedicated to her sport. First of all, she must be willing to spend time training every day, whether it be after school, or on weekends. Each time she runs, she must push herself to go faster and farther with every stride. At each meet, the runner spends most of her time cheering her teammates on as they compete. She must also prepare for her own event where she's expected to do her best, for the team and for her own satisfaction. The time sacrifice each member makes is evident in these track meets which can last from 10 A.M. to 10 o'clock at night.

The record of this past season proves that our C-J women were willing to give of themselves in both time and effort. Outstanding performers included the 440 yard relay team of Statzer, O'Neill, Adams, and McKee. They finished 4th in the District and 5th in the State. Sophomore Chris Raiff finished 6th in the District High Jump. Senior Kim Adams ended her brilliant high school career with District first in the 100 meter race and 220 yard dash. She went on to win a State Championship in the 220 and placed 2nd in the 100 meters. .

Award Winners this year were: Most Improved -Molly 0' Neill, Most Valuable Distance Runner - Cindy Minelli, Most Valuable in Field Events - Sheila McKee, and Most Valuable Sprinter - Kim Adams.

Aces One And All

Hours of practices, competitions, and overall preparation went toward developing the 1979-80 Men's Tennis players into a team. Nourishment for these hardworking athletes was often found in Pizza and Big Macs from the "Golden Arches." Awards winners for the season included sophomore Matt Roll who took second place at the Bellbrook Tournament. Ty Kramer, sophomore, received the Most Valuable PlayerAward and junior Mickey Holmes was named the Most Improved Player.

Christian Life Community

The Christian Life Community shared many things this year; a lesson in wilderness survival on the way to our retreat , fantastic Italian dinners prepared by Father Paul and most of all we got to know each other as unique individuals. We accepted responsibility for one another through sharing what we were and what we had in order to bring about unity in the group. Listening, disclosing, accepting and trusting were skills we learned in order to communicate better with God and others.

National Honor Society Membership in the National Honor Society requires leadership, academic achievement and a willingness to serve the community. Members of the society acted as guides during the first day of school, at the open house in March and as tutors. Underclass members ushered during the Honors Assembly, Baccalaureate Mass and the Graduation exercises at Memorial Hall. The C-J Honor Students developed and demonstrated 1979-80 school year.

A Year Of Change This past year in Marching Band proved to be a most interesting experience. In addition to enduring the usual amount of green eggs and demerits, the band also had a new director and a junior drum major. Our week at Band Camp was comparable to a week in a jungle, complete with torrential rain and a bee sting epidemic. Once the season began, however, superior performance rather than survival, became the main goal, which was reflected in a first-place rating at the Tipp City Competition.

The Pep Band, comprised of select members of Marching Band, followed this up with another great year, receiving first-place at West Carrollton and second place in the O. K.1. Invitational. Second place trophies in the State and National Contests capped another successful year for the C-J Marching Band and Pep Band.

#1 In Class A The choruses surpassed their own standards of excellence in the 1979-80 school year. There were outstanding performances at the Christmas Concert, Pops Concert and Festival of Music. In the OMEA Contest, the Mixed Chorus advanced from class B to class A. It received I, or superior ratings from all three judges at District, and then proceeded to State receiving II, or excellent marks from each judge. In addition, the Men's Chorus was awarded three I's at District and again at State, marking the second consecutive year that the men had achieved that pinnacle of success. It was the fourth time in the last five years that the men were awarded a collective I at State. This high level of achievement has become a way of life for the C-J Vocal Program. Whether performing a popular arrangement such as "What I Did For Love" or one of a more serious tone like "Laudate Dominum" the chorus members were constantly striving for perfection. Under the direction of Brother Bruce Giffin and guest directors, Mr. James Pera and Brother Terry Wong, the singers have completed another year filled with medals, awards and most importantly' music from the heart.

A New Music Man The Symphonic Band, like the Marching and Pep Bands, ventured through a prolonged period of adjustment this year. The loss of a large senior class, combined with the addition of a new director from Cleveland, made compromise necessary. Despite this time of learning, the band members performed well at the Christmas and Pops Concerts, respectively entitled "The Wonderful World of Christmas" and "Reach for the Stars." At District Contest, the band was awarded an overall · II for an excellent performance. The year concluded on a high note with an outstanding showing at the Festival of Music.

All That Jazz Being in the Jazz Lab this year was a real learning experience. With only 9 returning members and people constantly entering and leaving the group, the basics had to be emphasized continuously. The ensemble improved week by week, exhibiting its individual and collective talents well. In April, we went on a three day concert tour, making stops at the Ohio Northern Jazz Competition and Trinity High School in Cleveland. The band also competed in the U.D. Jazz Festival, where Mike Czeisperger was awarded the Best Soloist Trophy. Also, Mike, Kellie Gaston, John Shay, Sherry Bradley and Ed Brown were named to the NCBA National Honors Band. These honors capped a year of great improvement and achievement.

From Tryouts To Trophies

The 1979-80 edition of the Eaglette Drill Team was a very successful group. Performances at football games and several parades kept us busy in the fall. During the competition season, the Eaglettes took 2nd place at West Carrollton, 4th place and best inspection at O. K.I. 2nd place at Beavercreek, 4th place at Half-Time U.S.A. Nationals. Along with our winning performances, the Eaglettes were successful in another important way. From tryouts in May through summer practices, band camp, football season, pulled muscles, competitions, and State contest in April, 27 girls were able to stick together, even in the roughest times. Being a member of this group was a real learning experience. We discovered how it feels when your whole body aches, how to get along with people, even when you can't take it any more, and when the season concluded, we discovered we had 26 new friends that were with us in winning and losing, yells and whispers, tears and laughter, and we wouldn't trade them, or being an Eaglette, for anything.

Man is challenged today to excel in almost every endeavor ... Those who do

succeed often trace the beginnings of their performance pattern to accomplish

ment in high school and to those who offered stimulation and inspiration in these

formative years. Josten's has long been a partner to these educational leaders in

providing a means of motivation and the rewards of recognition, and Josten's

products have become tangible symbols honoring perseverance and achievement.

The class ring is representative of the fine traditions of school spirit and unity.

The yearbook provides a iasting memento of the year's accomplishments. The dip

loma is a lifelong record of scholastic success. The graduation announcement her

alds this achievement. Awards recognize academic and athletic leadership. More

than 3,000 Josten's employees are dedicated to your complete satisfaction. Service

Creating Wet Paint was a real challenge for all of us on the yearbook staff. We worked together through the difficult t imes like deadlines, redoing layouts or discovering overexposed film. Yet we still shared fun times such as eating doughnuts and laughing over our favorite sayings; The Fishbowl Effect, "But you need our leadership and guidance", Samurai Yearbook Editors, Chanel #5, and "I only say the things that come out of my mouth".

We would like to thank the staff members who stuck it out until the end and worked hard to make their own special contributions to the book. We would especially like to thank Lois, our copy editor, for working so hard and putting up with so much. We also thank Jim, George, and Darrell at Easterling Studios for dOing so much to help us make Wet Paint a success. We're very proud of Wet Paint and we hope that our imprint of 1979-80 will stay a long time with you. Caroline & Ellen
