Chambers County Library System – October, 2019 In October we welcomed two new staff members to the team. April Knight joins Anahuac as the new Children’s Librarian. Kari Hernandez also joined Anahuac as the after-school Page. We are happy to have these ladies on board with us. The Juanita Hargraves Memorial Branch in Winnie is still on the mend from Imelda. Contractors finally made their way in the doors, and have completed the floors, painting, carpet and now the books are making their way back. The library officially opened to the public on November 12. There are still a few minor details to work out, but things are moving along. Anahuac and Mont Belvieu held outdoor movies this month. Thanks to our Friends of the Library who purchased the inflatable movie screen, the branches can show evening movies outdoors when the weather is nice. On the 19 th , committee members and staff of Nerd Con were able to promote Nerd Con 2 at the city park movie at a showing of Hocus Pocus. We appreciate the City of Mont Belvieu allowing us to have a presence at their movie night. The 4 th annual Genealogy After Dark program was held on October 17 th from 10am-8:30pm. Live stream sessions were offered throughout the day and evening on several topics such as basic genealogy, dating photos, military records, probate, and more. This is the Waco McLennan County Library’s 19 th year to organize the event, and other libraries across the state have the chance to participate in the program. Several people stayed the entire day, while others popped in and out depending on the topic being discussed. October 20-26 was National Friends of the Library Week. This week allowed us to raise awareness and promote membership for our Friends at only $5/year. Our Friends members volunteer, and advocate for libraries and library services. We appreciate their ongoing support for the Chambers County Library System. Mont Belvieu teens and adults were treated to another Escape the Library program coordinated by Teen Librarian Shelby Fielding. This year the topic was “Escape the Asylum” where participants were confined to a room and had to figure out several challenging puzzles before they could escape. Several teams registered and all were successful in their escape efforts. At Anahuac, a coffee tasting program was held featuring the talents of Kimberly Judge with Soul Child, a local coffee roaster based out of Liberty, Texas. Kimberly brought samples of coffees for the group and shared her techniques and talked about her journey to become a coffee roaster. Everyone loved her samples! Halloween programs were in full swing for the little ones this month. Anahuac and Mont Belvieu held programs with ghostly games, haunting crafts, ghoulish snacks, music, and fun! Keeping in line with the spooky time of year, Anahuac and Mont Belvieu hosted Roger Johnson with LIGHT (Liberty Independent Ghost Hunters of Texas), and Chambers County Historical Commission Chair Sheryl Shaw. Shaw gave a haunted history talk about Chambers County and the local lore surrounding the death of General Thomas Jefferson Chambers. Johnson spoke about investigations his team has done, and also demonstrated some of the equipment they use. Before the program at Anahuac, LIGHT team members did a brief investigation of the Schilling office and Chambers

Chambers County Library System – October, 2019

In October we welcomed two new staff members to the team. April Knight joins Anahuac as the new Children’s

Librarian. Kari Hernandez also joined Anahuac as the after-school Page. We are happy to have these ladies on board

with us.

The Juanita Hargraves Memorial Branch in Winnie is still on the mend from Imelda. Contractors finally made their way

in the doors, and have completed the floors, painting, carpet and now the books are making their way back. The library

officially opened to the public on November 12. There are still a few minor details to work out, but things are moving

along.

Anahuac and Mont Belvieu held outdoor movies this month. Thanks to our Friends of the Library who purchased the

inflatable movie screen, the branches can show evening movies outdoors when the weather is nice. On the 19th,

committee members and staff of Nerd Con were able to promote Nerd Con 2 at the city park movie at a showing of

Hocus Pocus. We appreciate the City of Mont Belvieu allowing us to have a presence at their movie night.

The 4th annual Genealogy After Dark program was held on October 17th from 10am-8:30pm. Live stream sessions were

offered throughout the day and evening on several topics such as basic genealogy, dating photos, military records,

probate, and more. This is the Waco McLennan County Library’s 19th year to organize the event, and other libraries

across the state have the chance to participate in the program. Several people stayed the entire day, while others

popped in and out depending on the topic being discussed.

October 20-26 was National Friends of the Library Week. This week allowed us to raise awareness and promote

membership for our Friends at only $5/year. Our Friends members volunteer, and advocate for libraries and library

services. We appreciate their ongoing support for the Chambers County Library System.

Mont Belvieu teens and adults were treated to another Escape the Library program coordinated by Teen Librarian

Shelby Fielding. This year the topic was “Escape the Asylum” where participants were confined to a room and had to

figure out several challenging puzzles before they could escape. Several teams registered and all were successful in their

escape efforts.

At Anahuac, a coffee tasting program was held featuring the talents of Kimberly Judge with Soul Child, a local coffee

roaster based out of Liberty, Texas. Kimberly brought samples of coffees for the group and shared her techniques and

talked about her journey to become a coffee roaster. Everyone loved her samples!

Halloween programs were in full swing for the little ones this month. Anahuac and Mont Belvieu held programs with

ghostly games, haunting crafts, ghoulish snacks, music, and fun!

Keeping in line with the spooky time of year, Anahuac and Mont Belvieu hosted Roger Johnson with LIGHT (Liberty

Independent Ghost Hunters of Texas), and Chambers County Historical Commission Chair Sheryl Shaw. Shaw gave a

haunted history talk about Chambers County and the local lore surrounding the death of General Thomas Jefferson

Chambers. Johnson spoke about investigations his team has done, and also demonstrated some of the equipment they

use. Before the program at Anahuac, LIGHT team members did a brief investigation of the Schilling office and Chambers

home. There was unexplained activity present at both places and a follow up investigation is planned for late November

of the 2 buildings as well as the Chambers County Library in Anahuac.

And finally, we were thrilled to receive our department vehicle that we had budgeted for 2019. We call it our “READ-

Mobile”, and we use for daily mail runs, weekly branch visits, outreach services, transferring books/AV, reserves,

equipment, and supplies as needed to the libraries.

Until next month!
