Harvesting Capabilities is an organization to advocate for increased education, independence and supports for people with disabilities, the aging population and their caregivers in North Central Indiana. Harvesting Capabilities will empower people with disabilities to be independent and productive and be the driving force to find jobs, create work opportunities, help write business plans and research information. Harvesting Capabilities 5th Annual Chili Cookoff contest will be on Saturday, October 1st. Open to the public at 11 am, it will be located at the Riverwalk next to Miamisfort on West Canal Street in Peru. Tickets are $5 each for all the chili you can eat (kids 5 years and under are free). Chili will be served from noon to 3 pm followed by awards presentation for People’s Choice, Showmanship, Best Restaurant chili and Best Church chili. There will be a beer and wine tent, live entertainment, 50/50 and raffle prizes for the adults. For the kid’s a jump house and slide will be on site with other activities geared for all ages. Alongside the chili we will have available hot dogs, popcorn and nonalcoholic beverages. This is the one major fundraiser that Harvesting Capabilities puts on each year to provide assistance for people with disabilities in and around the Miami County area. Harvesting Capabilities is a private non profit agency that gets no government funding. We are looking for sponsors and cookers. Grissom Air Museum Calendar of Events for September:
September 5th – Labor Day Grissom Air Museum will be open from noon to 4 pm. September 11th – Grissom Air Museum will be honoring the 10th anniversary of 9/11. September 14th – Grissom Air Museum will be hosting the staff members of Indiana’s federal politicians at 3:30 pm in the Hall of Honor. September 17th – 736th Chapter of the Order of the Purple Heart will meet in the Hall of Honor at 1 pm. September 19th – the Special Olympic Area 5 Annual meeting to be held in our exhibit hall from 6 pm to 9 pm. September 23rd – Ten Model A Classics will be visiting the museum for a tour. September 24th – Miami Cass REMC will be using the grounds and the pavilion. Grissom Air Museum will play host to the final staging for the American Veterans Memorial Tribute Wall as it passes down US 31 to Kokomo. Staging will begin at 1 pm in the Grissom Air Museum parking lot. September 30th – Grissom Air Museum will be hosting Lowell and Scott Grissom as we celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Grissom Air Museum Exhibit Hall. The Miami County Community Foundation announces the launch of its 2011 Fall Grant Cycle. The Community Foundation has a long history of strengthening and enriching the lives of citizens in the communities of Miami County. For years, the Community Foundation has provided resources to seed ideas, foster development initiatives and encourage leadership in nonprofit organizations where imagination and determination are at work enhancing people’s lives every day. The Miami County Community Foundation is an affiliate of the Northern Indiana Community Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)3 public trust. The mission of the Community Foundation is to improve the quality of lives in our communities by assisting donors in fulfilling their charitable wishes. This is done by building endowment funds for the community with contributions, both large and small.
