Challoner Update 616
4th March 2016
From the Headteacher…...
CHALLONER update
On Thursday 3rd March Bishop Challoner joined in the celebration of World Book Day. This was
an opportunity for the pupils to come together to appreciate reading. There were so many
amazing characters of all ages spanning the school. Read-a-thon continues to run into next week
and also supports World Book Day.
At Bishop Challoner we educate the pupils to be tolerant of each other and to show respect. All
members of Bishop Challoner community are expected to show courtesy and consideration
towards others. Recently we have had some inappropriate behaviour from a minority of pupils
and I am afraid that inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. I would like to reassure
parents that matters of this nature are dealt with in accordance with school policy and taken
seriously.
I am delighted to see that we have retained the majority of our year 6 and they will be
continuing their educational journey into year 7 in September 2016. I am equally pleased with
the response from external prospective parents wishing to choose Bishop Challoner for their son
or daughter.
There were many sporting activities happening towards the latter part of last week. Last
weekend Tom, Scott, Alessio and Thomas competed at the British Schools Team Championships
at Brunel University. Amelia, Georgia and Gabriella won bronze in the U/15 Girls Epée, Foil and
Sabre events. William Youden attended the ISA National Cross Country Championships at
Princethorpe College, Rugby and came 12th in the U/9 boys event.
Today The Women's World Day of Prayer service was held at The Baptist Church, Beckenham
and prepared by the women of Cuba. We were pleased that some of our children were able to
take part in the service.
Our Open Morning will be starting at 9.00am tomorrow and we are looking forward to many
new visitors to the school who have already pre-registered. I would like to thank you in advance
for your continued support and for allowing your son or daughter to be ambassadors for the
school.

Year 9 created some wonderful masks that were
judged excitedly by the Year 5 class.
The masks were part of the English assignment to
design a mask for their favourite character in
Much Ado About Nothing, based on the
masquerade in Act 2, Scene 1 (Art and Design
skills came in handy too).
We are looking forward to following this up with
our trip to the Globe Theatre on the 18th March,
when the students will have a tour of the venue,
be able to visit the exhibition and have the
opportunity to do some acting with a professional
actor!

Senior Update
The Youth Travel ambassadors have been
spending time working on a pitch to
ensure students walk in single file on the
way to and from Shortlands Station. They
have launched a competition to design a
banner on A4 paper to encourage students
to walk in single file to the station. The
banner should be bright and eye catching
and get the message across to everyone
who views it. There will be prizes for the
best 3 banners and the winning banner
will be printed and hung up to remind
students. The deadline for
the competition is Wednesday 16th
March. Please hand any entries to Mr
Raveney or to Cameron or Ryan in year
7. We look forward to receiving your
banners.

It is the time of year again when we start
collecting the Active School Vouchers.
Every £10 spent shopping in Sainsbury's
equates to 1 voucher. These vouchers are
then used to purchase a range of
sports equipment for
the school. Please place any vouchers in
the box outside the staff room. Many
thanks in advance for your support.

Under shadow of The Shard our junior fencers
competed in the ISA Soft Fencing Tournament. A
huge thank you to Mrs Colling and Mrs Afzal for
coming to support and thank you to the London
Christian School for hosting the event.
Well done to all who competed and congratulations
to Reece and Tristan for winning silver medals and
Jacques and Isaiah for winning the gold.

NATIONAL
CROSS COUNTRY
Three Challoner runners
qualified through their regional
events to run in the Nationals
held at Princethorpe College in
Rugby. In fields of over 100
competitors our boys came
home in the top 20 of each of
their events.
Congratulations to William
who came in 12th on the U/9’s,
Luke 21st and Charles 17th in
the U/13’s
The British Schools Team Championships took place at Brunel University. It is a
two day event with all three weapons. The junior team competed in the U/11 boys
Foil. We had two teams in this event and they all fenced brilliantly and enjoyed the
competition. Congratulations Jacques, Reece, Lukas, Joshua, William and Oliver on a
great day of fencing.
The senior fencers entered all three events over two days. A huge thank you goes
to Alessio and Thomas who have only been fencing from the beginning of the year. Without them Tom and Scott would not have had a team.
The girls however have been fencing together for a while. On the Saturday they fenced in the U/15 Girls Epee and fought their way to the semi-
finals , only being beaten by the Millfield A team to win the bronze medal. On the Sunday they needed all the energy possible to compete in two
events. First the Sabre, where again they were beaten by Milfield A into bronze position. Later that day, they fenced in the Foil event, where they
narrowly missed out on the finals by two points. So close for another bronze medal. Congratulations Gabriella, Amelia and Georgia.

J4 trip to the Museum of London Junior News
As part of their History topic children in J4 had
the opportunity to visit the Museum of London
on Tuesday 23rd February. They enjoyed an in-
teractive, hands-on session where they each dug
to find Anglo-Saxon artefacts unearthed from
London’s streets. They explored these ancient
objects they had found, seeking to find evidence
as to what they may have been and what they
could have been used for. Through drama, the
children meet Viggo, a Viking from the far
north and explored evidence of other settlers in
the museum’s galleries.
The children were extremely well behaved and
enjoyed the experience of using public transport
by getting the train and the tube in order to get
to and from the Museum.
