  • • Today, many Malay language teachers find it challenging to teach imbuhan (affix) to students who lack practice in speaking and reading books in Malay.

    • We offer an approach where such group of students can do well in imbuhan exercises

    • Our approach allows these students to view solving a language task as a scientific endeavour and thus motivate their inquisitive mind to solve the problem.

  • • Our approach requires students to apply eight scientific rules to determine which part of speech the answer in an imbuhanquestion belongs.

    • To do this, they simply need to identify the position of the underline word (the question) in relation to certain elements in the sentence.

    Activity 1: • The participants will be shown four

    imbuhan questions in the form of four distinct sentences.

    • They will be asked (a) which part of speech (noun, verb and adjective) is required for the answer and (b) to provide the rationale for their choice.

    • Using the thinking routine Think-Pair-Share participants will submit their response in a Google Form.

    Teacher will engage the class in a discussion and address misconceptions.

    The presenter will (a) play a video to show the four scientific rules when the answer to an imbuhan question is verb, and (b) engage the class in a discussion and address misconceptions.

    Activity 2: • Participants will be given four new imbuhan

    questions with a focus on kata kerja (verb), and again they are in four distinct sentences.

    • Using the new knowledge that they have gained from the presenter’s feedback to address students’ misconception and learning gap earlier, participants are required to provide four rules why the answer must be in the form of kata kerja.

    • Using the thinking routine Think-Pair-Share participants will submit their response in a Google Form.
