Tsunami

• A tsunami (pronounced su-nah-me) is a series of waves, generated in a body of water by an impulsive disturbance that vertically displaces the water column.

• Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions, and even the impact of cosmic bodies, such as meteorites, can generate tsunamis.

• . .

The Development of a Tsunami

Underwater earthquakes cause an uplift of one

plate and a subsequent displacement of water.

The water is pushed upward above normal sea level. The resulting wave can be hundred of miles long and has been know to reach heights of up to

34 ft. The waves travel as fast or faster than a

commercial jet.

After Tsunami

• Contamination of drinking water, food, and living areas are a big problem.

• Destruction and damages of buildings.• Death, injury, millions of dollars in financial

loss• Impact on soil and water• Loss of fishing capacity.

300 000 dead

Thousands of houses destroyed

Loss of property

Tourist resorts and coastline buildings

Effects Of The Tsunami

Prevention

Is it possible to prevent a tsunami? “NO”• Once a tsunami has been formed, there is no way to stop it, but with

an effective warning system in place, people can be evacuated.

• And reducing the damage caused by a tsunami is certainly achievable. Tsunami walls, flood gates, and channels are three measures that can be taken to that end

• Flood gates and channels can help redirect some of the incoming water from a tsunami, but a large tsunami will easily overwhelm any of the measures that are used to reduce its strength

Emergency Preparedness• If you feel an earthquake, expect a tsunami warning in its wake, and vacate

low-lying areas.• A tsunami can also be dangerous farther from shore because it can carry

buildings, cars • If you see a drop in sea level, leave the area immediately. Also, a tsunami

may sound like an oncoming train.

It would be more better if following things are provided before the tsunami destructions:

• Tsunami information bulletin = a threat exists.• Tsunami watch = residents should be alert.• Tsunami warning = tsunami arrival times are given

Adaptations Child Protection

• Protecting children separated from parents or orphaned by the tsunami

• The charities helps children without parents get places in foster families or with their extended families.

• They also create safe places for children in camps, and trained staff to look after them.

Recreation• Plans were put in place to repair

damaged roads and railways. Drains were cleared to prevent the infestation of flies and mosquitoes.

• Most families will be living in temporary shelters for at least three years.

Adaptations

New businesses must be adopted to spring up all across the

areas hit by the Tsunami.

Community Centers

These were built to serve as preschools, clinics, libraries and meeting places for children’s groups. The centres will also

provide a safe place for villagers in future emergencies, such as monsoon

flooding

Cage Fish Rearing

Here’s hoping that none of us is ever in the path of a tsunami.

GOOD LUCK to us all!
