Challenge –
A case study
![Page 4: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
The Japanese have always
loved fresh fish.
![Page 5: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
But the waters close to
Japan have not held many
fish for decades.
![Page 6: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
So fishing boats got bigger and
went further into deep sea.
![Page 7: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
The farther the fishermen went, the
longer it took to bring in the fish.
![Page 8: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
• Since the return trip took more days,
the fish were not fresh.
• The Japanese did not like the taste.
![Page 9: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
Freezers on Boat
To solve this
problem, fishing
companies installed
freezers on their
boats & they would
catch the fish and
freeze them at sea.
![Page 10: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Freezers allowed the boats to go
further in deep sea and stay longer.
![Page 11: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
• However, Japanese could taste the
difference between fresh and frozen fish.
• The frozen fish brought a lower price.
![Page 12: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
So fishing companies installed fish tanks in
their boats. They would catch the fish and
stuff them in the tanks, fin to fin.
![Page 13: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
After a little thrashing around, the fish
stopped moving and stayed. They
were tired and dull, but still alive.
![Page 14: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
•Since the fish did not move
for longer periods, they lost
their fresh-fish taste.
•The Japanese preferred the
lively taste of fresh fish, not
sluggish and dull fish.
![Page 15: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
What was the Solution ?
•So how did Japanese fishing
companies solve this problem?
• If you are a consultant, how will
you take up this challenge &
suggest your recommendations ?
![Page 16: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
"Man thrives, oddly enough,
only in the presence of a
challenging environment.”
![Page 17: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
For the Japanese fish problem,
the best solution is simple.
So how did the Japanese
Fish stay Fresh?
![Page 18: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
The Solution ?
• To keep the fish tasting fresh,
the Japanese fishing companies
still put the fish in the tanks.
• But now they add a small shark
to each tank.
![Page 19: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
The shark eats a few fish,
but most of the fish arrive
in a very lively state !
![Page 20: CHALLENGE - CASE STUDY](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022042816/55943de61a28abe35b8b4686/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Reason ???
• The fish are challenged
because of shark and hence
are constantly on the move.
• The challenge they face
keeps them alive and fresh!

•Without challenges we can
become complacent, find life
boring, and become inactive.
•Remember oaks grow strong in
contrary winds, and diamonds
are made under pressure.
