Johan Sölkner: Inbreeding and inbreeding
depression: News from a genomic perspective
1978 - 1983 Study of Agricultural Sciences (BOKU, Vienna)
1984 - 1988 Dissertation at University of Natural Resources and Life
Sciences, Degree Dr. rer.nat.tech.
1991 Habilitation in Animal Breeding and Population Genetics at
University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Assoc. Prof.)
2000 - present Full Professor of Animal Breeding and Population Genetics, Vienna
2006 Visiting professor at University of Sydney, Australia
Several research fellowships in Australia
Johan Sölkner: Inbreeding and inbreeding
depression: News from a genomic perspective
• Introduction of the concept of runs of homozygosity for calculation of inbreeding
levels from SNP chip data and comparison of this information with pedigree
inbreeding
• The improved calculation of inbreeding levels with genomic data allows better
understanding on the effects of inbreeding depression (reduced fitness)
g genes causing inbreeding can be found
• In practice, recessive disorders, which are part of inbreeding depression, can be
systematically avoided
g by genotyping breeding animals and not mating individuals that are both
carriers of genetic variants causing particular recessive disorders
Barbara Wallner: Genetic characterisation of
stallion lines using Y-chromosomal markers
1991 - 1998 Study of veterinary medicine, University of Veterinary Medicine
Vienna
1998 - 2001 Doctoral student of Prof. Dr. Gottfried Brem (Institut für Tierzucht
und Genetik, Veterinärmedizinische Universität Wien)
Title: Selektive Klonierung von y-chromosomalen DNA-Sequenzen
beim Pferd mittels „Representational Difference Analysis“
2000 - present Assistant at the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics,
University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna
Research fellowship at the University of Porto, Portugal
Barbara Wallner: Genetic characterisation of
stallion lines using Y-chromosomal markers
• The presentation shows that polymorphic markers on the Y chromosome are useful
to elucidate the origin of individual stallion lines and enable a pedigree-independent
genetic characterisation of stallion lines
• An analysis of the genetic material of the Y chromosome can give information on
the male ancestry (Y chromosomes only passed from fathers to sons)
• Analyzing of the Y chromosomes of stallions from different European and American
breeds using the new sequencing technologies
• Y chromosome data clearly show influence of stallions from the Middle East to
European and American breeds

Lukas Roos: Inbreeding in the
Holstein sport horse breed
2004 - 2010 Study of Agricultural Science (Animal Science),
Humboldt University Berlin and Christian Albrechts University Kiel
2011 - 2014 Dissertation at the Institute for Animal Breeding and Husbandry,
Christian Albrechts University Kiel, Prof. Dr. J. Krieter
Title: Reproduction and health in Holstein Warmblood mares
- Impact of population structure and data recording -
2015 - present Timac Agro Deutschland, Regional Sales Manager
Lukas Roos: Inbreeding in the
Holstein sport horse breed
• A pedigree data set including 129.923 Holstein warmblood horses was analyzed
• Aim: Determination of genetic diversity, coefficients of inbreeding, the age of
inbreeding and the genetic contributions of founder animals and foreign
breeds
• Reference population includes all horses which had been born between 1990 and
2010
• A slight increase in the effective population size and a stagnation of inbreeding
during the last generation
g Impact of more open access given to foreign stallions in the recent past?
