President’s Message

Dear Fellow Congregants,

Happy 2020! TBD has our mindset focused on sustainability and creating meaningful Jewish

engagement for all. I encourage everyone reading this newsletter to make a secular New Year‟s

resolution to get more involved with us. We will have several amazing committees that will be

invaluable in providing top-notch programs and celebrations. Three of these committees are

Bikkur Cholim, Membership, and Holiday Celebration. Here is some more information about

each:

One of the most important middot, values, in Judaism is caring for those in our community who

are in need of healing. This value is referred to as Bikkur Cholim and is central to our

future and reinforcing TBD as a caring and compassionate Jewish community. As a

member of the Bikkur Cholim committee you will be doing an incredible mitzvah by ex-

tending hope and strength to those facing challenging and isolating circumstances. You

will be responsible for calling and visiting members in need of a refuah shleimah, a

healing of mind, body, and spirit. Once this committee is established our Rabbi will be

leading an orientation on how to visit and call those in need.

Another committee that is vital to our future is the TBD Membership committee. We are seeking

friendly, upbeat, and outgoing members for this community to grow TBD.

While this is not an exhaustive preview of the volunteer opportunities at TBD for those who en-

joy party planning we will also have a Holiday celebration committee.

Rabbi and our committed TBD Board will be a resource for every committee - but we

cannot do it alone.

Have a healthy, happy, and joyous 2020!

Sincerely yours,

Barry Nickelsberg

Rabbi’s Message

Happy Secular New Year! The last six months have been incredible. My family and I have been so

warmly welcomed here at TBD. I have spent time getting to know many of you as I implement pro-

grams and learning opportunities, and I look forward to extending these interactions in 2020 and

beyond.

Last month I attended the URJ Biennial conference in Chicago, IL. I was honored to represent TBD.

In two years at the next URJ Biennial I hope that TBD will have a greater presence at the confer-

ence. It was wonderful to see congregations gather together for meals and to review in real-time

what they were gaining from the conference and their excitement for bringing new ideas back with

them. During the five-day conference, I attended many presentations concerning small and emerg-

ing congregations. I met with URJ leadership and leaders in the progressive movement about

trends and research findings of outreach to those in the 20s/30s stage of life, the role of Jewish

grandparents, audacious hospitality, a modern Israeli taste of Chanukah, and so much more…

TBD is more than a house of worship. This month we are starting a lecture series on the different

expressions of Judaism in America. I am also teaching Yiddish 101, a grandparents course, and

implementing URJ curriculum-based learning opportunities as well…just to name a few. I shared

my plans with synagogue presidents and board members at the conference and they were very

excited about what TBD is doing. Many shared similar concerns that I have heard from you about

burnout…including „are you adding more days to the week?‟ „Rabbi, how are you able to do all

these things?‟ Reality is the opposite - I am fueled by sharing my love of Judaism with you…instead

of having my energy depleted by these events - my energy expands without limit.

I love being your Rabbi. As you know a Rabbi is a teacher, a guide, and a leader. A Rabbi moti-

vates, excites, and challenges. For some the Rabbi represents Judaism…I work each day to be the

Rabbi that inspires you to personalize your Judaism. I want to be part of your lives. When you‟re

sick, I want to know so that I can be there to offer prayers, encouragement, and spiritual support.

If you‟re going through a life milestone, I want to know that too. I‟m here to help facilitate connec-

tions between your Jewish identity and your everyday life.

While I focus on relationships with you, it is also important that our congregation as a whole thinks

about how we relate to one another and our community. If you‟re part of a TBD committee, thank

you. If you‟re interested…we have so many opportunities to get involved.

Wishing everyone a sweet, happy, and healthy 2020,

Rabbi Jesse

We invite all members of TBD to become involved by bringing items and placing them in the container in the

vestibule. This project will continue through February.

Learn more about Mending the Gap at www.mending-the-gap.org . They request that ONLY these items be do-

nated:

needed assistance. Questions may be directed to Martha Whitman, [email protected].

Make Your Voice Heard in Israel!

Vote in the 38th World Zionist Congress Elections!

The World Zionist Congress Elections are coming soon, and our congregation‟s votes are critical to maintaining a

large Reform presence! The election is our chance to have the Reform Movement‟s voice and priorities heard in

Israel. It‟s a powerful way to combat the discrimination the Reform Movement faces from the Israeli government.

It‟s the only election where YOUR VOTE as an American Jew directly impacts the future of Reform Judaism in Is-

rael.

At a time when the Government of Israel has not been responsive to the Reform agenda, including egalitarian

worship, pluralistic values, and peace in Israel, a strong delegate presence will give us a greater voice to repre-

sent our cause and demand better among Israeli leaders.

The election will take place from January 21 thru March 11, 2020. During the weeks to come the TBD Social

Action Committee will provide more information on why your vote is important and on how you can vote. We will

follow up with Question and Answer sessions at the beginning of the voting period.

World Zionist Congress Elections are held every five years. Representatives are selected from Israel, the U.S.,

and the rest of the world. During the 2015 election, ARZA (representing Reform Judaism in the WZC) received

39% of the U.S. votes and 56 of the 145 U.S. delegates. (To put this in perspective, Israel has 190 delegates,

and the rest of the world has 165.)

What is the impact? The World Zionist Council impacts funding and policies for the Jewish National Fund, thee

World Zionist Organization, and the Jewish Agency for Israel. Since the last election our delegation ensured that

over $4 million a year in financial support went to the Reform movement in Israel. Over the last five years two

new Reform Synagogues were opened in Israel. The WZC also appoints representatives to national institutions in

Israel and works with Israeli political parties to influence Israeli society in matters including Conversion, Marriage

and Divorce, Religious Pluralism, Gender rights, and Combating racism.

Who can vote? Voters must be over 18 by June 30, 2020, must self-identify as Jewish, and must live in the U.S.

Voters should support the Jerusalem Program (platform of the World Zionist movement). There will be a fee to

vote, as the WZC has hired a neutral third party to manage the online voting in a secure manner.

After many years of volunteering at Zaban, we have made the decision to no longer participate as an organi-

zation after our March 7 volunteer date. This was not an easy decision. The Zaban shelter is a wonderful or-

ganization that truly values the volunteers who help by providing hot meals.

Over the years, Zaban has split off from The Temple and is a separate non-profit. We have made the decision

to put our limited volunteer resources into Jewish organizations and local Gwinnett organizations. Bringing

food to Zaban is rewarding but requires a lot from the few people who volunteer each time.

Anyone who would like to individually volunteer at Zaban is more than welcome to sign up directly with them.

We are still looking for additional volunteers to help out on Saturday March 7, to cook and bring dinner to the

residents. To volunteer, please contact Anne at [email protected]

AROUND TBD

Can you believe it is really 2020? We have a whole new year ahead to look forward to monthly activities and projects with

your TBD Sisterhood. Make 2020 be the year that you get involved ...whether it is attending meetings, helping plan and

carry out projects, and/or making sure at least one activity a month makes it to your new calendar.

Thank you to all who came out for the TBD basement clean up on Nov. 24th. This group....you know who you are....worked

tirelessly to make this project happen. You can not imagine all the “stuff” that was carefully gone through and organized

and all the stuff that we no longer needed that was just taking up space. A special thanks to Ryan and Bobby who carried

out a very heavy old copier and other old equipment and trash, enough to fill a Suburban to the brim. The area looks much

better now and we actually know where things are!

Our Pre-Hanukkah Party was a huge success, filling Iris's home with our members. The food was yummy and plentiful, a

special shout out to Susan who made large platters full of delicious latkes (did you say 200?) and all the others who

chipped in for the sides and desserts. The Board, who coordinated this party and did much of the work, should be com-

mended on a job well done. A thank you also goes to Martha, who ran the gift exchange and Randy who ran the Hanukkah

trivia game.....we had many “smarties” and “dum dums” and lots of laughs! Showing our support and how much we care,

we collected money and gift cards for our dedicated teachers and coordinator to be given to them at the TBD Hanukkah

Party.

Our first meeting of the year will be on Jan 11th at 4:30 in the TBD Social Hall. We will start off with a Wine and Cheese

social prior to the meeting (there will be non alcoholic options available). There will be several wines to sample and a vari-

ety of cheeses and crackers. This will be an important meeting as we will be voting on our next year's Board. Please join

our group for dinner at Chili's after the meeting.

Sisterhood book club will be meeting on the 19th at 11:00. The book we will be discussing is When Life Gives You

Lilulemons by Lauren Weisberger. If you are planning to attend this group for the first time please contact Randy

at [email protected].

A reminder that the Sisterhood sponsored mahjong group meets every Thursday evening in the TBD social hall. If you are

interested in learning more about this fun game contact Wendy or a Sisterhood Board member.

Don't forget about our Sisterhood run gift shop at TBD. We try to keep the inventory interesting and you can't beat our

prices on Judaica. Profits from purchases get cycled back into Sisterhood projects. If you would like to see what we have

to offer and the shop is closed, contact Randy at [email protected] or Susan at [email protected]

and they will contact a gift shop worker to open the shop for you.

Thanks for helping Sisterhood grow and thrive.

When donating to the Yahrzeit Fund, General Fund, Donald Freidus Memorial Garden Fund, and Rabbi's Discretionary Fund, please

send donations to Laura Friedman, TBD Treasurer, Temple Beth David, P.0. Box 865, Snellville, GA 30078-0865. Checks should be

made payable to Temple Beth David and please specify on the check or attached note which fund you are donating to and in mem-

ory/honor of whom. Otherwise, the donation will be applied to the General Fund.

Memorial Garden and Temple Grounds

Hope everyone is taking a little time to enjoy the beautiful Memorial Garden. I am always looking for assistance with pruning and

planting so please let me know if you would like to help or do anything in any way to maintain the garden area. It is also necessary

to keep the plants watered when we have a dry spell so feel free to do that as the hose is out on the grass to use. There are also

empty soda bottles with a special orange screw on lead which will feed the plants with water and liquid fertilizer, etc. I would be

helpful if someone would fill the bottles and stick them back in the ground near the plants.

The donations by check or donation of plants that like shade are always welcome. Just let me know what you have and we can ar-

range to have them planted.

Remember if you would like to put down a plaque in memory of a congregant or someone close (spouse, parent, and child) please

let me know. I would ask for an estimate of the cost of the plaque for you. A dedication service would be scheduled to put down the

plaque mounted on a stone when it is received.

For those of you who don‟t know why FAMILY NEEDS was formed – here‟s why. We reach out to families who experience loss of a loved one or who

are going through a serious or not so serious illness.

If you are taking care of an adult or a child with an illness and suddenly find yourself without food in your house because you haven‟t had time to go

to the grocery store – call us. Give me a list, some money and we‟ll shop for you. If you‟ve a conflict getting children/adult to a doctor and/or a

sports event at the same time and don‟t have someone to drive – call us. I can‟t guarantee we can help – but we‟ll try. We try to take some of the

burden off your shoulders.

If a close relative has passed away – call me (Wendy Fine 770-962-6486) or Barry Nickelsberg (770-809-4058) – one of us can get in touch with a

rabbi who can do a funeral locally. If you have to go out of town – let us know and we can send a platter of food to be delivered after the funeral or

for a shiva service wherever you are. If it‟s local we do the same thing. If you‟re having a shiva service for 1,3, or 7 days we can make sure that you

will have someone there to lead prayers and make sure that there is food (usually dessert things) for afterwards.

We work with the family and your friends to make sure that you get the comfort, care and help that you may need. We also send sympathy cards,

and get well cards as needed.

We don‟t ask that you pay for any of this but we can always use donations to help cover the cost of this. Your donations “in memory of” “in honor

of” “congratulations” or “get well” are our only source of funds for this service. If you make a donation please send it to Laura Friedman, TBD Treas-

urer at P.O Box 865, Snellville GA 30078. Make sure your check says FAMILY NEEDS on the check. Laura will make sure that the person or family

you are helping will get a card stating your donation (but not the amount). These donations will be listed, again, in our monthly bulletin. Believe me

– the families you are helping will very much appreciate everything you can do to help. This also ensures that we can continue our good work.

PLEASE PLEASE REMEMBER ONE THING – I AM NOT A MIND READER. Don‟t tell your friends that you need help – they will sympathize with you and

probably not tell me. I don‟t want anyone to feel that they are not important and that we don‟t care. We do!
