Whether summer takes you to exotic destinations, family visits or your own patio, our Federation remains in high gear. The needs of those who depend on us never take a break, nor does our important work.

As we write, our Federation campus is bustling with vibrant colors and sounds as campers of varied ages and abilities exude the joy of top quality summer fun and learning.

Anyone who has visited Sinai Residences of Boca Raton knows that joy is also emanating there. Our new senior neighbors recently celebrated the grand opening of their state-of-the-art Ted & Barbara Wolk Spa and Fitness Center. Sinai’s independent residences are just under 100% occupancy, and the Health Center is on track to open later this summer with a full continuum of lifecare services in assisted living suites, memory care and skilled nursing care.

From Sinai Residences we can see the construction in full swing on the new facility for Yeshiva High School. When those new young neighbors join our students at Donna Klein Jewish Academy, Katz Hillel Day School of Boca Raton and Levis JCC Zale Early Childhood Learning Center, we’ll be the only Jewish community in the country with two preschool through high school Jewish scholastic tracks on one campus.

There can be no mistaking it – Jewish South Palm Beach County is clearly a thriving year-round, multigenerational Jewish community!

Here at Federation, our parking lots and walkways are full, as our offices buzz with planning for the 2016-17 season. In this issue of Chai Life, you’ll learn about some of our exciting developments, like our Deborah and Larry D. Silver Center for Jewish Engagement’s growing success in bringing our community together; our process to assess, enhance and develop programs and services for those with special needs; and our new funding for some highly innovative projects in Israel.

Meanwhile, as you receive this issue of Chai Life, several of our Federation leaders are traveling to Paris and Israel, learning more about the important work of our community’s dollars throughout the year, as well as how much more is needed by our global Jewish family in the face of rising anti-Semitism, increased aliyah and economic stresses exacerbated by surrounding political instability.

Growing up in a struggling secular family in Bulgaria, Rebecca had almost no exposure to Judaism. But she found her Jewish heritage and family at the Federation–funded Camp Szarvas operated by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). After several summers there, she eagerly brought traditions and customs back to her family and community. Now Rebecca, 19, is a counselor, helping ensure that young campers receive the same fulfilling Jewish experience that has so powerfully defined her own life. ANNE JACOBSON:Leading and Giving

from the HeartAfter taking the role of Chair Designate a year ago, our new Board Chair prepared in earnest to take the gavel. But Anne Jacobson’s path to leading our Federation began about four decades ago in a little townhouse in the Chicago suburbs… when a cash-strapped young couple at the edge of losing everything, after sinking all they had and more into their business, turned to each other and made a promise.

“Overwhelmed by that gut-wrenching fear of how the bills would get paid, of what would happen to our children, my husband Norman and I promised each other – with the odds far against us – that if things turned around, we would do whatever we could to ensure that others facing such adversities would have comfort, sustenance, shelter and hope for the future knowing they were not alone.”

And when that business turned around to become successful beyond their imagination, Anne and Norman began to fulfill that promise. Among their many philanthropic gifts in South Palm Beach County, they are Prime Minister’s Council donors to our Federation’s Annual Campaign, and have named the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation and the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS.

But even now, Anne re-experiences that scarcity and dread viscerally when she encounters it among those in need. So, for her, Federation’s work is personal. “I see my job first and foremost in terms of what we mean to the people we help, those who still wait, and those who will need us in the future,” she says.

Anne’s path to leadership began more than 20 years ago when, still a snowbird, she picked up the phone, called our Federation and made herself a Lion of Judah. In the process, she found a home and a calling. “I realized how much more I could help if I took that step into leadership,” she says. “Over time, I learned, I grew and I took that leap.”

With her open heart, the more she saw and learned, the more her Jewish family grew – from down the street to across the globe. The more she was compelled to respond to a myriad of needs, the more she was inspired to lead - in breadth and depth throughout the Federation, Foundation and agencies, acquiring consummate knowledge and skills across the board – and receiving the prestigious National Women’s Philanthropy Kipnis-Wilson/Friedland Award and, with Norman, the JFNA National Endowment Achievement Award.

Fully rooted, with children and grandchildren here, Anne believes that, “Those of us who care deeply are drawn to our Federation because no other organization has our capacity to be there where and when our Jewish people need us. And no other organization can bring us together as a community to accomplish miracles.”

Anne’s most heartfelt goal as Chair is to make others feel her passion to ensure that no one, from our youngest to our very oldest, is left out. “Working together, none of us – not individuals or families, not our agencies or synagogues – needs to stand alone in this remarkable community so full of Jewish life,” she says.

BUOYING A FAMILY IN CRISIS

A self-supporting single mother in Boca Raton, Beth was proud of 25-years as a nail tech. But summer 2015 had just begun when an SUV mowed her down in a crosswalk and sped off, leaving her with multiple serious injuries and one arm permanently paralyzed. We were there when Beth’s first concern was her children as she began her long recovery. Scholarship funds for Levis JCC Marleen Forkas Camps gave Aliya and Morgan positive experiences that brought stability and joy into their household during their darkest days. And because of your generosity, we’re there right now, seeing that Beth’s children have a great summer at camp while she continues her recovery. Because none of our Jewish neighbors should have to face a crisis alone.

S inai Residences of Boca Raton held its grand opening celebration on May 3, marking the culmination of an eight-

year-long endeavor and a festive dedication for the luxurious 23-acre senior living complex on the Federation campus. More than 500 guests from across the community attended, including local rabbis, community leaders and new residents of this state-of-the-art Continuing Care Retirement Community.

Current and past members of the Board of Managers who have governed and developed the project cut the ceremonial ribbon, and Rabbi Dan Levin of Temple Beth El of Boca Raton recited the traditional blessing for a mezuzah dedication for a new home.

The celebration also featured a ribbon cutting and dedication of the Ted & Barbara Wolk Spa and Fitness Center at Sinai, as well as guided tours of the facility and its state-of-the-art amenities.

While enjoying an elegant lunch buffet in Sinai’s lovely tent-covered courtyard, the guests listened to inspiring words and well wishes from local dignitaries, Federation leaders and Sinai executives. Rabbi Efrem Goldberg of Boca Raton Synagogue delivered an invocation, and the crowd also heard from Lois Frankel, Member of Congress; Wes Finch, Chair of the Board of Managers; Mel Lowell, Federation COO and lead Federation professional on the project; Chris Newport, Sinai Executive Director; and Matt Levin, Federation President & CEO.

Four times larger than last year’s, a crowd from across Jewish South Palm Beach County raised the ruach in testament to the strength and joy of our united Jewish community at the local observance of Jewish Unity Day on June 6, 2016. Nearly two thousand strong, we gathered in all our vibrant Jewish diversity at the Carole & Barry Kaye auditorium at FAU in Boca Raton for a night of inspiring presentations, videos and music we’ll all long remember.

The evening was presented by our Federation’s Deborah and Larry D. Silver Center for Jewish Engagement (CJE), in partnership with more than 60 local synagogues, schools, agencies and organizations.

Together, we again joined communities around the globe to commemorate the kidnapping and murder of the three Israeli teens Naftali Fraenkel, Gil-Ad Shaer and Eyal Yifrah in 2014, and reignite that summer’s unity. Very special guests Bat-Galim and Ofir Shaer, parents of Gil-Ad Shaer were interviewed onstage by Rebbetzin Yocheved Goldberg.

Other speakers included Congressman Ted Deutch; Russell F. Robinson, JNF Jewish National Fund CEO; and Conservative, Orthodox and Reform rabbis: Efrem Goldberg, Boca Raton Synagogue; David Steinhardt, B’nai Torah Congregation; Dan Levin, Temple Beth El of Boca Raton; and Marci Bloch of Congregation B’nai Israel. Rabbi Ruvi New, Chabad of East Boca, offered spirited songs.

The audience also heard from the Federation’s Board Chair, Anne Jacobson; President & CEO Matt Levin; Executive VP Marla Weiss Egers; and from CJE Director Rabbi Josh Broide, who kvelled, “Of course, our community fosters and practices Jewish Unity every day of the year,” Rabbi Broide stated.

Stay tuned for all sorts of opportunities as we build upon the Jewish Unity Day event’s success. We have big plans!

“We were always involved in philanthropy,” said Larry. He recalled early memories in his Virginia synagogue of his father fundraising for Israel during the Six-Day War and the Yom Kippur War. Larry soon followed, chairing the local UJA appeal for Russian Jews and leading many global Jewish causes. Now the Silvers are giving back to their own community in a big way: this year, they named the Deborah and Larry D. Silver Center for Jewish Engagement (CJE), a division of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County.

Through innovative and collaborative programming, the CJE aims to inspire and engage each member of the Jewish community and connect them to meaningful Jewish experiences.

“The CJE is something that is close to our hearts and it’s the only program that we know of in the world,” said Deborah. “We hope to eventually expand to other communities nationwide.”

The Silvers truly exemplify that spirit of diversity. “Deborah and Larry understand that there are different ways in which we can express our Judaism, and they believe deeply in lending their support to the many different paths we travel as Jews,” said Rabbi Dan Levin of Temple Beth El. Their proactive approach to philanthropy extends to all corners of the Jewish world and beyond. “Larry and Deborah are proud Jews, deeply committed to our people, to our homeland and to our continuity,” said Rabbi Efrem Goldberg of Boca Raton Synagogue. “In addition to being generous with their resources, they are amazingly giving with their hearts, their love and their time.”

Larry, a real estate developer, and Deborah, a jazz vocal artist, carve out ample time to support countless charitable causes. From building a JAFCO home to funding medical research, and from performing in concerts for charity to sending supplies to hurricane victims, they have a long history of giving. And they have passed these values on to the next generation. Their children, Spencer and Madison, have organized fundraisers which raised tens of thousands of dollars. The family has a particularly strong connection to the national campaign to raise awareness of ALS and fund a cure for the disease. They recently launched the Slam ALS campaign on social media, following the earlier success of the ALS ice bucket challenge.

“We thrive on what we feel we are supposed to be doing: helping other people,” said Deborah. “There is much more work that needs to be done, and it’s been great watching our children join us in our efforts, so we know they will continue what we started. We look forward to the future success of CJE and are excited to contribute as much as we can to the Jewish community in South Palm Beach County and beyond.”

Their proactive approach to philanthropy extends to all corners of the Jewish world and beyond. “Larry and Deborah are proud Jews, deeply committed to our people, to our homeland and to our continuity,” said Rabbi Efrem Goldberg of Boca Raton Synagogue. “In addition to being generous with their resources, they are amazingly giving with their hearts, their love and their time.”

Larry, a real estate developer, and Deborah, a jazz vocal artist, carve out ample time to support countless charitable causes. From building a JAFCO home to funding medical research, and from performing in concerts for charity to sending supplies to hurricane victims, they have a long history of giving. And they have passed these values on to the next generation. Their children, Spencer and Madison, have organized fundraisers which raised tens of thousands of dollars. The family has a particularly strong connection to the national campaign to raise awareness of ALS and fund a cure for the disease. They recently launched the Slam ALS campaign on social media, following the earlier success of the ALS ice bucket challenge.

“We thrive on what we feel we are supposed to be doing: helping other people,” said Deborah. “There is much more work that needs to be done, and it’s been great watching our children join us in our efforts, so we know they will continue what we started. We look forward to the future success of CJE and are excited to contribute as much as we can to the Jewish community in South Palm Beach County and beyond.”

FEDERATION TO FORM TASK FORCE TO EXPLORE SPECIAL NEEDS SERVICES

The mitzvah of “tikkun olam,” repairing the world, is central to the mission of the

Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. Recognizing that there is an

important group of special needs children, adults and their families who depend on

us, Federation has embarked on a process to devise a long-term strategy focused on

their education and care.

Though the community currently has many thriving programs, creating a

comprehensive plan and expanding services will help South Palm Beach County

become a premier, all-inclusive community for those with special needs.

“We recognize that there are gaps in services, and as our community grows, challenges arise and additional services

are needed,” said Matt Levin, Federation President & CEO. “We held Town Hall meetings to explore this issue

together with agencies, day schools, rabbis and stakeholders, to raise awareness and discuss the role that our Jewish

community should play in serving those with developmental disabilities. We are actively seeking out partners and

educating ourselves so we can learn from and engage in best practices across the country.”

Helene and Roy Schwedelson, who endowed the Helene & Roy Schwedelson Special Needs Department at the Levis

JCC, were the first to initiate such a program in South Palm Beach County some 25 years ago. The department has

expanded significantly and continues to grow, with new programs and services being added consistently over the last

two decades. They are gratified at the progress that has been made in the accessibility of special needs services at the

JCC and throughout the community.

“When we moved to Boca Raton, there were no programs for our young adult son with special needs,” said Helene.

“Today, the JCC’s special needs program is a flagship in the community, and helps thousands of people in multiple

ways. The amazing growth and development of special needs services is a dream come true.”

At the same time, the special needs population is growing and more services and resources are needed.

“I applaud the Federation for understanding the need to embark on a community-wide effort to analyze where we are and

where we want to be heading with our programming,” added Helene. “We need to ensure that agencies are not duplicating

services, so as to maximize our efforts and dollars and enhance the wonderful work already being done.”

For Emily Grabelsky, a Federation leader in this effort, the project represents the unique

inclusiveness of the South Palm Beach County Jewish community. “We are so fortunate

to live in a place where people are sensitive to these issues, and are engaged in

strategic planning for the future,” she said. “We need to think now about how to

be more inclusive and offer more programs and services throughout the entire

community. We all have the ability to work together to weave a beautiful safety

net for all of these families. I’m so proud that our community is coming together to

begin this important conversation.”

KING DAVID SOCIETY DONORS ENJOY INTIMATE DINNER WITH ALAN DERSHOWITZ

About 60 foremost donors of our Federation enjoyed a

private dinner on March 24 with Alan Dershowitz, the Felix

Frankfurter Professor of Law at Harvard Law School who

has been called “America’s most public Jewish defender.”

Members of Federation’s King David Society (KDS) were

invited to dine with and hear the professor in a private

room at Congregation B’nai Israel prior to his public

remarks before an audience of 1,000. Campaign Chair

Larry Feldman welcomed the guests, noting Federation’s

significant increases in KDS-level contributions during the

current season.

Matthew C. Levin, Federation President & CEO, introduced

the professor, who spoke about Israel and the diaspora,

including the challenging atmosphere on many college

campuses. Dershowitz stressed the need for Jews to have

strength in order to have peace, as history has proven that

learning and good intent do not defend us as the armed

force of a nation state can. He also called posing the

question of whether to allocate resources to the Jewish

community or Israel a false dichotomy, because the

strength of the Jewish community strengthens Israel, as

Israel strengthens us.

For a fourth year, our Jewish community came together in all its diversity with one purpose at the THE EVENT: to celebrate all the good we do together and get inspired to do even more for those who depend on us. From our synagogues, our Federation partner agencies and schools; from longtime leaders and donors to newcomers; and from multiple generations - a crowd of more than 600 filled the rooms at B’nai Torah Congregation on February 23.

THE EVENT festivities kicked off with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, food stations and a showcase of the Jewish community’s wealth of resources – amid the powerful buzz of cross-community connections old and new.

“Tonight, we come together to show our collective power to make a profound impact both today and tomorrow. Together we feed, protect, teach, inspire, save and comfort our Jewish family,” welcomed Chuck Lichtman, who co-chaired the evening with his wife, Gayle, and with Nancy and Greg Gefen.

Attendees browsed a showcase of Jewish community resources, and heard compelling stories from people whose lives have been changed through their assistance. Holocaust survivor Norman Frajman received a standing ovation. The featured speaker was Henry Winkler, iconic actor, producer and children’s book author best known for his unforgettable, award-winning role as The Fonz on Happy Days. To tears as well as laughter, Henry Winkler shared his life story and his many successes, as the son of parents who escaped Nazi Germany through his struggles with dyslexia to his two-consecutive Golden Globe awards and efforts on behalf of children with learning disabilities.

The evening’s warmth, power and inspiration continued through the extended dessert reception and out into the community as the crowd reluctantly called it a night.

NEARLY $440K. 30,000 MEALS. one very super sunday/good deeds day

This Super Sunday, Federation not only banked on the Jewish community to make and answer three shifts of Phone-A-Thon calls. They also counted on a few hundred more to observe the international Good Deeds Day with a hands-on project. By the end of the remarkable day chaired by Talia and Hal Klein, the volunteers had raised $439,315 and assembled 30,000 kosher meal kits.

Volunteers from all stages of life sat at tables, many with friends, neighbors and colleagues from a school, agency or synagogue, and AEPi Fraternity at FAU. As they worked the phones, each volunteer added to the palpable community spirit in Zinman Hall with a steady buzz of calls being made, pledges announced and raffle prizes awarded.

In the afternoon, hundreds more volunteers streamed into the Loewenstern Cafetorium at Katz Hillel Day School of Boca Raton on the Federation campus for the Good Deeds Day project. Working steadily to rock music, representatives of all ages from across our diverse Jewish community assembled 30,000 kosher meal kits to stock the shelves at the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS. And alongside were special PJ Library® – South Palm Beach County mitzvah projects for families with young children.

helping activities:

Among our food collections, we’ve

raised dollars for, packed and

delivered Chanukah and Passover

food and gift packages to those in

need. We assembled 30,000 kosher

meal kits, and an array of groups

packed bags at the food pantry on

many occasions.

Marking our holidays and

occasions with donations, we’ve

collected and delivered not only

food, but also hundreds of toys,

sporting goods, and gift cards

for young people, seniors and

families in need. We brought toys

to children in group care, enjoying

pizza and playtime with them, and

we shared activities with children

who have special needs.

We raised funds for a Model Seder

for older seniors and special

programs for Holocaust survivors,

where we served, sang and danced

with them. We helped provide

and shared a seder for those in

recovery. And our children

created useful crafts and cards

to brighten the lives of

youngsters with serious

illnesses and homebound seniors.

NEW LEADERSHIP, COUNTERING TERRORISM FINANCING HIGHLIGHT MEN’S SPRING EVENTFederation’s recent Men’s Division Spring Event brought

more than 50 men of all ages from across the community

to the home of Stuart Ganslaw for a night of education,

camaraderie and a passing of the torch. They enjoyed

an open bar and hors d’oeuvres as Event Co-Chairs

Roger Leavy and Jeff Ganeles gave everyone a warm

welcome. Guest speaker Avi Jorisch, Founder of Red Cell

Intelligence Group, discussed how financial institutions are

funding terrorism.

Federation President & CEO Matt Levin also spoke,

delivering well wishes and a farewell gift for outgoing

Men’s Division Co-Chairs Stuart Ganslaw, Gary Rubin

and Peter Wohlgemuth. Then it was time to applaud the

incoming Men’s Chairs—Ken Lebersfeld, Chuck Lichtman

and Ira Holz, three strong, caring men and business

leaders who will lead the Men’s Division into the 2016-17

season with vision, skill and creativity.

Together the women celebrated the past two-year term of Women’s Philanthropy Chair, Judi Schuman and rededicated themselves to the future as new officers were installed and Judi passed the gavel to incoming Chair, April Leavy. Schuman and her team were lauded by leaders including Kupferberg, Federation Board Chair Anne Jacobson, Federation President & CEO Matthew C. Levin, and Judi’s husband, Allan.

Karen Dern and Janice Obuchowski received special recognition as this year’s recipients of the Dorothy Seaman Leadership Award. For the past two years, they have worked as partners to lead the Women’s Philanthropy Chapter Two education and leadership development program, as well as educational events with prominent speakers for hundreds of participants.

Emily Grabelsky, recent past Women’s Philanthropy Chair, conducted a moving installation ceremony for the 2016-17 officers. On receiving the gavel from Judi Schuman, April Leavy expressed her gratitude for her “exposure to the brilliant, powerful descendants of our matriarchs, who carry a wonderful spirit and a

thirst to make our world a better place – and whose expertise and wisdom continue to inspire me.”

Together the women celebrated the past two-year term of Women’s Philanthropy Chair, Judi Schuman and rededicated themselves to the future as new officers were installed and Judi passed the gavel to incoming Chair, April Leavy. Schuman and her team were lauded by leaders including Kupferberg, Federation Board Chair Anne Jacobson, Federation President & CEO Matthew C. Levin, and Judi’s husband, Allan.

Karen Dern and Janice Obuchowski received special recognition as this year’s recipients of the Dorothy Seaman Leadership Award. For the past two years, they have worked as partners to lead the Women’s Philanthropy Chapter Two education and leadership development program, as well as educational events with prominent speakers for hundreds of participants.

Emily Grabelsky, recent past Women’s Philanthropy Chair, conducted a moving installation ceremony for the 2016-17 officers. WOMEN HEAR RIVETING JEWISH AUTHOR WHO FLED IRAN, AT SPRING EDUCATION DAY

Women from across the Jewish community had a

remarkable opportunity to hear the personal story of

a woman’s heroic flight from Iran for a life of freedom.

Gathered for the breakfast program at Spring Education

Day at the Federation on May 10, the women were inspired

by guest speaker Dr. Sima Goel, whose book, Fleeing the Hijab: A Jewish Woman’s Escape from Iran, chronicles her

journey to achieve personal freedom.

Co-chaired by Karen Dern and Janice Obuchowski, the

morning was the latest of our Women’s Philanthropy’s

meaningful educational programs with speakers who

bring crucial and timely topics to our community of

Jewish women.

The women were warmly welcomed by Women’s

Philanthropy Chair April Leavy, and Women’s Campaign

Chair Jill Rose spoke of their vital work that makes

profound differences in so many lives. Following Goel’s

riveting presentation, Marcia Beckerman led a deep and

spirited question and answer session with the speaker.

FORMER REFUSNIK SAYS “TIME IS RIPE FOR POMEGRANATES”

Power. Passion. Purpose. These are the driving forces behind

our Federation’s Pomegranates. And these forces were

readily apparent at the Pomegranate Event. Held at the

beautiful home of Joan Hauser, who co-chaired the event

with Stephanie Midler, the morning honored women who

contribute between $1,800 and $4,999 to the Federation’s

Annual Campaign.

Both seasoned and newly-pinned Poms listened to featured

speaker Marina Furman, a Former Soviet Jewish Refusnik

who tried to convince the Soviet government to give her and

thousands of Russian Jews permission to immigrate to Israel.

Furman did make Aliyah to Israel, where she was in charge

of resettlement for the Mayor of Ra’anana, and she is now

Executive Regional Director at JNF in Philadelphia. Recently,

Marina and her family were featured in the documentary, It’s a Mitzvah, and in the featured CNN.com article, Defying the KGB: How a Forgotten Movement Freed a People.

CHAI ROLLER SUMMER SOIREE HITS A FULL HOUSENearly 300 young adults spent Saturday night, June 18, enjoying casino games, dancing to the hottest tunes, posing in the photo booth, mingling with YAD friends old and new, and collectively making a difference by raising nearly $3,000 on the spot! YAD Chair Sarah Lippy kicked the program off enthusiastically, sharing why she is proud to be part of the Young Adult Division and our Federation, and encouraging others to become more involved in our community.

The evening could not have been realized without the help of Social Co-Chairs Marissa Gart and Robert Weingard, as well as Event Committee members Daniela Gordon, Lauren Koblick and Matt Schwartz.

Women’s Chair Melissa Rayman and learned the special

merits of making challah from Simone Broide. They also

learned about the Federation and JARC, and heard from a

guest presenter about the American Jewish Joint Distribution

Committee (JDC) work building a strong Jewish community

in Poland. Previous sessions in the series brought young

women to learn about staying positive and healthy living

while learning about getting involved in our community.

Vibrant festivities in Federation’s Dedication Plaza

marked Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel’s 68th anniversary

of statehood on May 12 as ruach filled the south

campus. Music, flags and parades permeated the

area as Donna Klein Jewish Academy students

dressed in blue and white were led in energetic

Israeli dancing throughout the morning and early

afternoon - with Levis JCC Early Childhood Center

preschoolers, residents of JARC and senior housing

on campus, parents and Federation campus

employees joining in the fun.

The Federation and DKJA collaborated to bring

Silvio Berlfein of Horah Entertainment to lead

the campus celebration. Just a few steps away in

Zinman Hall and the Cultural Arts Building, DKJA

students also offered displays and activities on

Israeli technology, science and culture.

LOCAL TEENS AND ADULTS RETURN FROM LIFE-CHANGING MARCH OF THE LIVING

After months of intensive preparation, on May 1, 70

of our Jewish community’s high school students

boarded an airplane to Poland for the annual

March of the Living journey. They embarked on the

two-week capstone experience of this renowned

international Holocaust education program with

35 local Holocaust survivors, rabbis and educators.

Another group of 37 marchers joined in a parallel

journey on this year’s 5-star Adult Bus trip,

intersecting with the teens at meaningful points

along the way.

In Poland, they traveled the depths of the Holocaust,

through camps, ghettos and remnants of once-

thriving Jewish communities. With more than 12,000

cohorts from more than 45 countries bearing banners

from their regions, they observed Yom HaShoah

(Holocaust Remembrance Day) on the iconic annual

March of the Living from Auschwitz to Birkenau, the

largest concentration camp complex built during

World War II.

From the ashes, they went on to discover the

wonders of our modern State of Israel, observing

Yom HaZikaron (Israel Memorial Day), and celebrating

Yom HaAtzmaut, (Israel Independence Day) with a

jubilant march through the streets of Jerusalem.

After two weeks, both students and adults returned

deeply bonded to each other, to our community and

to the Jewish people, prepared to bear witness to

the Shoah and ready to ensure that “Never Again”

remains more than a slogan far into the future.

SEASON’S THIRD B&P ICON EVENT SCORES A HOME RUNIt was “batter up” in the early morning as the Lewis Katz Business

& Professional Industry Icon Series welcomed David P. Samson,

President of the Miami Marlins.

Larry Feldman, Campaign Chair, gave an impassioned

presentation on the importance of giving; recognizing that when

one is blessed with abundance, it is so important to share that

abundance with those who need it most.

Taking the stage after him, Samson quipped that Larry was a

tough act to follow. But with humor and wit, Samson delivered a

riveting talk with the same sentiment: giving back to the Jewish

community is imperative. Samson also discussed his early life,

his family, and how he rose in the ranks of business to now find

himself President of an MLB team. His charisma and insights were

a hit with the audience of more than 100 local entrepreneurs and

professionals from a wide variety of fields.

Samson followed earlier 2015-16 Industry Icon speakers Royal

Caribbean CEO, Richard Fain and Chairman & CEO of Georgia

Aquarium Michael Leven. The 2015-16 Icon Series was co-chaired

Why Endow?

JACOBSON JEWISHCOMMUNITY FOUNDATION

During its first program year in partnership with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation’s

LIFE & LEGACY™ initiative, the Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) program at the Jacobson

Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF) received $33.2 million in declarations of intent,

the highest dollar amount of the 23 communities reporting from around the country. In just one

year -- of a designated four-year program -- 15 CJL organizations in South Palm Beach County

secured 293 legacy commitments from 235 individual donors.

“Our number of endowments keeps increasing as more people understand the value of

planned giving,” said Matt Levin, President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of South Palm

Beach County. “Legacy giving is catching on, and the CJL initiative has brought home the

value of our Federation and Foundation far into the community. It’s a win-win for all the

organizations – because they’re making this effort now, they will thrive in years to come.”

“We far surpassed our initial estimate and expectations,” said Cathrine Fischer Schwartz, Senior

Vice President of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation. “Out of the 293 gifts, almost 50

new legacy commitments will benefit the Federation, with almost half of the expected amount

of money earmarked for Federation. It’s a significant addition to our future as a Federation and

as a community.”

LIFE & LEGACY™ provides training, support and incentive grants of up to $10,000 to

participating organizations to promote planned giving. The Harold Grinspoon Foundation, in

partnership with Federation, also led four educational seminars in South Palm Beach County

this year, offering guidance on fundraising techniques.

“Foundations and endowments were not initially prioritized in the Jewish community, and we

were all about the here and now,” said Cindy Bergman, Associate Executive Director of the

Adolph & Rose Levis Jewish Community Center. “But since CJL started, we’ve had an impetus

to pursue legacy giving, and now we have a critical eye on the future.”

A desire to give back and a sense of communal obligation are what motivated Janet Elinoff

to participate. “My decision to become part of CJL was really driven by my values, and my

need to pay it forward and ensure the viability of our special needs programs throughout the

community,” said Elinoff, a longtime supporter of special needs causes.

Bill and Tanya Miller chose to leave legacy gifts to their synagogue as well as a local Jewish

day school. “We think it’s incumbent upon the younger generations to step up to ensure that

our children and future generations will be able to continue their Jewish studies and their

traditions in a supportive community,” said Bill. “We need to be sure that we are here for future

generations to come, and that is not a given.”

CJL also provides a way to explore new avenues in giving and connect with donors

at all levels.

“While many schools have annual gifts and building campaigns, nothing was being

done to encourage legacy giving,” said Cara Freedman, a trust and estates attorney

who chairs the CJL campaign for Yeshiva High School. “This is about starting the

conversation, even if families may not be ready to commit just yet.” Even longtime

donors don’t fully understand how planned giving works. “The Grinspoon program

offers resources for people already financially committed to institutions on an

annual basis to consider legacy giving,” Freedman explained. “Those people are the

natural target, so to speak. As the program grows, we need to attract others. Small

gifts can add up to a large endowment.”

For Jewish day schools, planned giving was not typically part of their fundraising strategy.

“Legacy giving and building up an endowment is an aspirational goal for day

schools,” said Helena Levine, Head of School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy.

“CJL has been an exciting opportunity for us to be involved in planned giving, with

donors stepping up to ensure the long-term success of our school.”

MITZVAH SOCIETY EVENT HONORS ELYSSA KUPFERBERG AND IRVING ECKHARDT

JWF announces $100,000 in grants with bestselling self-help authorThe Jewish Women’s Foundation (JWF) of South Palm Beach County announced their 2016 grant awards at their annual Granting Wishes Cocktail Reception on March 16 at Boca Rio Golf Club. Nearly 200 guests gathered for the inspiring announcement, and to share an interactive evening with Marci Shimoff, a #1 New York Times bestselling author, PBS host, and one of the nation's leading experts on finding happiness, success, and unconditional love.

JWF Trustees determine their grantees together, through a collaborative, highly selective eight-month process. In thirteen years, they have awarded more than $1 million to fund programs that increase Jewish women’s and children’s abilities, education and independence locally and globally, in categories including education, health and abuse prevention and economic security.

From the beginning, our Federation has been deeply committed to meaningful support for and connections with our global Jewish family. In light of national trends and community priorities, last year our Federation assembled a task force to re-evaluate our Israel and Overseas funding. We adjusted how our unrestricted dollars are distributed between JAFI and JDC, and increased our JDC allocation to provide additional services to the most vulnerable Jewish populations in Israel and around the world. In addition, we’re increasing our funds available for other inventive and effective non-profits in Israel.

We are excited to introduce you to the eleven innovative programs we’ve added to our roster of beneficiaries. They include eight newly-funded organizations and three new elective programs through JAFI. These new partnerships increase our impact in Israel, serving diverse populations and addressing current issues in unique and creative ways. We look forward to sharing what we’re sure will be inspirational stories from these programs, and to visiting them on Federation missions.

Federation Family Grows with New Programs in Israel

Beit Issie Shapiro provides cutting-edge services to improve quality of life for

people with disabilities including therapeutic and educational iPad solutions through

the Federation-funded iAbility: Using Advanced Technology to Advance the

Lives of Children with Disabilities.

Nirim Foundation, started by Israel’s Navy Seals, offers empowerment

workshops with a second chance for at-risk youth. Federation support to Girls

at Risk in Dimona will provide young women ages 14-18 at extreme risk with

case managers and female empowerment workshops.

Bet Elazraki Children’s Home for at-risk children

Shutaf provides a “reverse inclusion” leadership

training program for 14-25 year olds, with (75%)

and without (25%) disabilities, including vocational

training and work opportunities to prepare young

adults for successful adulthood.

Wings offers IDF lone soldiers without family in Israel help

to transition into life after military service. This elective JAFI

program helps with obtaining employment and higher education,

with counseling, testing and other services to fulfill the lone

soldiers’ dreams of productive, rewarding life in Israel.

Federation Family Grows with New Programs in Israel

United Hatzalah’s 3,000 trained volunteers respond to over 700 emergencies

per day, providing emergency first response to 250,000 people each year.

Federation’s pledged donation of an ambucycle (an ambulance-motorcycle)

will help further fill service gaps and improve immediate response times.

Yashar LaChayal’s Water Backpack Program provides IDF soldiers

with free water backpacks to increase their effectiveness and decrease

health-related issues. Federation funding will allow expansion of the

program during the hot summer months.

LEKET Israel rescues 35 million pounds of

nutritional produce per year and distributes

it to 35,000 needy families each week and

nearly 95,000 people per day. In partnership

with Hands on Tzedakah (HOT), Federation’s

pledged donation of a refrigerated truck will

increase the amount of food rescued.

Onward Israel, a JAFI summer abroad program, brings young

Jewish adults to Israel for a 6-10 week first-hand experience

of study. Federation funding will establish the first group of our

community’s students during summer 2017, enabling them to

learn, develop connections with Israeli peers, and strengthen their

commitment to Israel and Jewish peoplehood.

Yad LaKashish trains Jerusalem’s low-income immigrant elderly as

artisans who create gifts, jewelry and Judaica sold all over the world.

They also receive financial assistance and food. South Palm Beach County

funds are now provided through the Mollie Rosenthal Memorial Fund of the

Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation.

Har’el Pre-Army Academy provides residential guidance and education to

Russian-speaking immigrant youth ages 17 to 19 who have finished high

school and are preparing for IDF enlistment. Many in this elective JAFI program

have immigrated before their parents, with the option to make aliyah.

JCRC “CONVERSATION WITH ALAN DERSHOWITZ” DRAWS 800+

FEDERATION HOSTS GOVERNOR SCOTT’S SIGNING CEREMONY FOR BILL FIGHTING BDS

A Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law Emeritus at Harvard Law School,

Alan Dershowitz has been called “America’s most public Jewish

defender” and “Israel’s single most visible defender – the Jewish

state’s lead attorney in the court of public opinion.” So it was no

surprise when more than 800 people from across South Palm Beach

County turned out to hear him at our Jewish Community Relations

Council’s (JCRC) free evening program at Congregation B’nai Israel.

The guests were welcomed by the synagogue’s Senior Rabbi, Robert Silvers,

and by JCRC Co-Chairs Jill Rose and Andrew Robins, who spoke of the

JCRC and Federation’s vital work in the community and on behalf of Israel.

The program format was a conversation between Professor Dershowitz

and Matthew C. Levin, Federation President & CEO. Amid frequent

applause and cheers, they covered an array of topics of high interest and

concern to the Jewish community. The professor spoke of his journey into

Israel advocacy as an extension of his defense of human rights, and about

the array of threats to democracy, the challenging atmosphere on college

campuses, countering the rise of anti-Semitism, and prospects for peace

in the Middle East. Professor Dershowitz emphasized the need for Jews to

have strength in order to have peace, and the interconnectedness of the

strength of Israel and the strength of Jewish communities in the diaspora.

Our Federation and Jewish Community Relations Council

welcomed Governor Rick Scott hundreds of other

distinguished guests into Zinman Hall on April 6 for the

ceremonial signing of SB 86, which prohibits the State Board

of Administration from contracting with or investing in

companies that boycott Israel.

“This bill ensures that the State of Florida will not support

those that participate in campaigns fueled by intolerance

and anti-Semitism like the Boycott, Divestment and

Sanction movement, that have no place here,” said Scott.

The bill received nearly unanimous bipartisan support

in the 2016 Florida legislative session, and Governor

Scott was aptly joined by bill sponsor, Senate President-

Designate Joe Negron, State Senators Maria Sachs and

Joseph Abruzzo, and Representatives Ritch Workman

and Jared Moskowitz. Also flanking the governor during

the signing were Lieutenant Governor Carlos Lopez-

Cantera and Consul General of Israel Lior Haiat.

“It is fitting that the governor chose to hold this

ceremony on our campus, as our Federation has been

in the forefront of state advocacy for Israel,” said

Federation President & CEO, Matthew C. Levin. He called

for continued action to ensure that, “if you do business

with companies that won’t do business in Israel, you can’t

do business in Florida and you can’t do business in South

Palm Beach County.”

The JCRC’s efforts on behalf of the bill were part of their

overall advocacy in the 2016 Florida Legislative Session.

The JCRC and Federation’s beneficiary agencies worked on

a variety of issues, from committee weeks and a Legislative

Sendoff, a visit to the capitol in Tallahassee during the

session, and through the signing process. Among other

2016 advocacy successes were significant additional

dollars for Holocaust survivors care, and local skills training

funds for adults with special needs.

Christians and Jews Join to Remember Holocaust

Vowing, “Never again,” hundreds from the local Jewish and Christian communities came together to commemorate the Holocaust shortly before Yom HaShoah in an interfaith, intergenerational march and program coordinated by our JCRC. They began at Boca Raton Christian School, where Chaplain Greg Calder set the tone of common purpose with an opening prayer. Walkers from throughout the community included many rabbis and Christian clergy, as well as Congressman Ted Deutch, Boca Raton Mayor Susan Haynie and City Council Members Robert Weinroth and Scott Singer.

The half-mile march led to Temple Beth El of Boca Raton, where the group joined with others in a deeply moving Interfaith Holocaust Remembrance Program. Federation Executive VP Marla Weiss Egers welcomed the guests, who then heard from Boca Raton Police Department Chaplain Scott Salisbury, Holocaust survivor Norman Frajman, student Leah Avni, Rabbi David Englander of B’nai Torah Congregation and The Rev. Craig Burlington of St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church. A touching candlelighting ceremony with survivors and interfaith students was led by Temple Beth El’s Rabbi Dan Levin, and stirring musical selections were provided by the temple’s Cantorial Soloists Lori Shapiro and Michelle Auslander Cohen, with cello and piano.

Planning for the collaborative event included, among others, the Federation and JCRC, Boca Raton Interfaith Clergy Association, Boca Raton Christian School, Temple Beth El of Boca Raton and The Flame Society.

Through its programs and services, every day the Levis JCC makes a difference in people’s lives.

The Jewish Association for Residential Care, a non-sectarian organization, provides group homes, apartments and vocational training for adults with developmental disabilities. JARC strives to assist each individual in becoming all he or she is capable of being, and the agency encourages this growth in a caring, nurturing environment. It is JARC’s mission, in partnership with the families of their clients, to promote independence, dignity and self-respect in order to create more fulfilling lives.

JARC’s Community Works Program, sponsored by JARC and the State of Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, and also funded

by a $10k grant from the Jewish Women’s Foundation of South Palm Beach County, is designed to Create Job Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities. This population currently has a 73% unemployment rate. The program is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act that prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have access to mainstream employment opportunities. It is also responsive to the Olmstead decision to provide integrated community-based employment for persons with disabilities. The program currently has a partnership with Marshall’s, The Cheesecake Factory and Grand Lux Café.

For the second year in a row, through JFS’ sound fiscal management practices and commitment to accountability and transparency, the agency has earned a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. A 4-star rating, an accomplishment achieved by only 1 in 4 charities, demands rigor, responsibility and commitment to openness.

Danielle N. Hartman, JFS President & CEO proudly stated, “In the current economic environment, it’s important that our donors trust that we are using our funding wisely in order to accomplish our mission of offering

help, hope and humanity to those in need through our comprehensive range of programs and services.”

JFS has also been named a Top Workplace by the Sun Sentinel for the second year in a row, once again ranking 10th in their category for small employers. The evaluation for the Top Workplaces program is based upon feedback from an employee survey that JFS staff completed a few months ago. The Award Committee compared the information to other non-profit organizations of similar size. Only 55 companies in South Florida have been selected for a Top Workplaces award.

Students from Claire and Emanuel G. Rosenblatt High School at DKJA recently participated in the Annual Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) Young Engineers Conference. Two teams from the Biomedical Engineering elective and one team from the Introduction to Engineering elective presented their projects. Participants were Jordan Hannon, Noah Siegel, Omri Bronfman, Zakary Moran, Benjamin Zedeck and Elliot Morgenstern.

One team sourced materials, and built and demonstrated a filament extruder to help decrease the cost of 3D printing. The students

researched the feasibility of using materials such as plastic water bottles in making safe and workable printing filament. Another team researched and utilized pressure sensors using conductive fabrics for pressure mapping sensor pads. The pressure sensors can potentially be used as diagnostic tools for the prevention of skin ulcers in bedridden patients, and for customized therapies in podiatry. A third team designed, built and demonstrated a wearable heart rate monitor with a warning alert if medical attention is needed in patients experiencing insulin shock.

KHDS students in Early Childhood through eighth grade observed Yom Ha’atzmaut in a multifaceted celebration spanning Boca Raton to Israel. 8th graders spent the day singing and dancing at the Beit Elazraki Children’s Home in Netanya during their annual class trip to Israel. Back on the Milton B. Katz Campus in Boca Raton, Early Childhood through 7th grade students participated in a variety of Israel-themed activities and interactive stations throughout the day to celebrate Israel’s independence. The annual performance of Daglanut, the Israeli Flag Dance by the 5th grade class, added a special show at Sinai Residences

as the students paraded across 95th Ave. S. to perform for the resident neighbors. Daglanut was choreographed and taught by the school’s B’not Sherut (National Service volunteers), who teach Israeli customs and values to the children throughout the year. This year’s Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration was sponsored by the Wultz Family in memory of Daniel Cantor Wultz. KHDS is proud of its strong Zionist curriculum and core values.

Additionally, they are excited to welcome Rabbi Rafi Draiman as Torah Academy’s new Head of School. Rabbi Draiman brings a wealth of educational experience and expertise and is warmly welcomed to Boca Raton and the Torah Academy family.

Yom Ha’atzmaut at YHS kicked off with a school-wide davening featuring a ruach-filled Hallel. Following breakfast, students chose among Israel-themed classes. They then heard from the JNF’s Daniel Klein about the IDF’s new program “Special in Uniform,” which helps Israelis with special needs integrate into the army, and from the spellbinding Col. Bentzi Gruber about the ethics under which IDF soldiers operate. After a festive barbecue luncheon with dancing led by the student band, staff and students all headed to Davie for roller skating to Israeli music.

YHS is very excited to announce that they anticipate completion of their new facility on the Federation campus by the end of 2016. The new building’s beautiful and spacious layout will offer students more opportunities for learning and inspiration as YHS develops and nurtures the next generation of Jewish leaders. In its 18 years, YHS has grown from 41 students to 310, making it the largest Modern Orthodox Yeshiva High School outside of the New York area.

CHHRE was established in 1996 to prepare teachers to implement Florida Statute 1003.42: Required Instruction on the Holocaust. Serving all schools in seven counties including Palm Beach, the Center is a valuable resource providing age-appropriate materials, lessons, and consultations to teachers and community organizations.

CHHRE’s programs such as lectures and exhibits for the community and professional development for educators provide thought-provoking information and generate dialogue that leads to understanding of current issues. The lessons of the Holocaust are reminders that hate, conflict and violence are extremely relevant to the world we live in and our greatest weapon is to educate.

In the last 18 months, FTS was awarded nearly a half million dollars from the FDOT 5310 Program with which nine new vehicles were acquired at 10% of the purchase price. With this, FTS has been able to help even more clients get to “life sustaining events,” such as doctor appointments, and trips to the

grocery store and/or pharmacy. FTS was established in 1993 to respond to the overwhelming demand for transportation services for the elderly and disabled in South Palm Beach County. Even in tough economic years, FTS has successfully provided approximately 55,000 trips to those in need.

In March, Hillel of Broward and Palm Beach worked with Hasbara Fellowships and Israel Ideas to bring an Israel Innovation Fair to FAU. Hillel students used their networks to connect to student groups and university departments, including the College of Engineering, to promote attendance. The remarkable attendance included many students who were not Jewish and knew little to nothing about Israel beyond the negative headlines. They visited displays from Israeli start-up companies, interviewed

for internships and listened to a panel discussion with CEOs of Israeli tech companies about how to start a business and why Israelis have been so successful in this field. While students came to pursue professional networking opportunities, they left with a true appreciation and understanding of “the other side” of Israel. Thanks to Hillel, both Jewish and non-Jewish students gained a better insight into Israel and had an experience that increased their professional skills and opportunities.

This full-time weekday program operated by the Volen Center serves those with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease and provides caregivers with much needed respite. A caring staff leads participants

in enriching mental and physical activities and provides stimulating entertainment. Breakfast and lunch are served. A support group is also offered for caregivers.

Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options (JAFCO) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization established in 1992 to serve abused and neglected children in South Florida. Recently, staff at JAFCO witnessed the wedding ceremony of a young couple. Everyone was moved as the groom’s eyes filled with tears of joy, as this long-awaited moment in his life had finally arrived. It seemed as if it were yesterday when the groom was an 8-year-old child who walked into the

tiny one-room JAFCO office. He was so scared and confused, not knowing what had just happened to him or his family and not understanding why he had just been removed from his parents. That was 23 years ago. He was one of the very first children of JAFCO, and now, on his wedding day, his life had truly come full circle as the rabbi offered the new couple his blessings and everyone wished them a heartfelt “mazel tov.”

JEC was founded nearly 11 years ago to combat assimilation and Jewish apathy by creating programs that make Judaism exciting, meaningful and relevant for every Jew. JEC offers the chance for a Jew of any background to enrich their life through Jewish education and Jewish experiences. JEC recently hired a full-time Youth and Family Programming Director, Rabbi Yisroel Hecht. With his dynamic personality and innovative programming ideas, he has taken the Hebrew School,

day camp and high school programming to a whole new level. JEC is also excited to announce that their summertime program, Camp Nageela Boca, is starting its first summer at Grandview Preparatory School. The camp now has an olympic- sized pool, full indoor gym, martial arts room, dedicated art room, and an incredible director. The sky is now the limit for JEC to teach “Jewish pride, The Nageela Way!”

Merging the power of film with some of the Jewish world’s most revered thought-leaders, Jerusalem U breaks old molds, forging new approaches to Jewish and Israel education through the creative use of film and technology, all distributed via the Internet, social media, television, grassroots campaigns and partnerships with mainstream pro-Israel and Jewish

organizations. Jerusalem U is committed to strengthening the emotional and intellectual connection of young Jews to Judaism and Israel. Recently, 200+ JU Israel post-high school students who have been studying this year at 20 partnering institutions enjoyed an incredible screening in Jerusalem for the Mekonen Gap Year event.

This hot kosher meal program is one of seven senior dining sites operated by the Volen Center. Providing meals five days a week to seniors 60 and over ,and funded by the Older Americans Act, this kosher dining site offers much-needed opportunities for socializing. Volen

Center staff and volunteers provided by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County welcome seniors daily, providing nutrition education, activities, and opportunities to meet new friends. The Volen Center also provides no-cost transportation to and from its dining sites.

NCSY is dedicated to connecting, inspiring and empowering Jewish teens and encouraging passionate Judaism through Torah and tradition. In the last few months, they have held their Spring Regional in Gainesville, inducted new teen boards, held leadership training days for their JSU boards, and held their annual teacher appreciation event. They

are incredibly excited and thankful for an amazing year. This summer, many of their teens will be growing and expanding their Jewish identities on various NCSY summer programs, here and abroad. Founded in 1914, JDC is the world’s leading Jewish humanitarian assistance organization, and works on behalf of North America’s Jewish Federations to rescue Jews in need and strengthen Jewish life in 70 countries worldwide. JDC also provides a Jewish response to disasters, humanitarian crises, and international development challenges.

JDC’s bedrock commitment to Israel began at its inception; today, its social service innovations are empowering Israel’s most vulnerable—giving youth at risk, the chronically unemployed, people with disabilities, and struggling immigrants the tools to participate fully in the country’s future, and improving senior citizens’ quality of life.

The Jewish Agency for Israel brings Jews to Israel, Israel to Jews and helps build a better society in Israel and beyond. In 2015, The Agency facilitated Aliyah for 31,153 people which represents a twelve-year high. An all-time high of 7,795 were from France. The Jewish Agency reached 100,000 Jewish students by connecting them to Israel and the Jewish community on 150 college campuses in North America.

Nearly 11,250 people participated in 5-12 month educational and volunteer programs through Masa Israel Journey. An additional 1,300 participants came to Israel on

6-10 week Onward Israel programs, and 6,200 young Jews came on Birthright trips supported by The Jewish Agency.

The Agency also works to close socioeconomic gaps in Israeli society and opened four food cooperatives that offer low priced provisions in locations throughout Israel’s periphery. The Agency plans to open 40 such cooperatives around the country. The Agency also offers financial and social aid to families of victims of terror. The Agency is further expanding the Har’el pre-army academy, which supports immigrants from the former Soviet Union who are joining the IDF.

ENP works tirelessly, hand in hand with Federation, to ensure the full and successful integration of Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society. ENP was created by Jewish Federations as Diaspora Jewry’s tool to address the needs of Ethiopian-Israelis in partnership with the Government of Israel and the Ethiopian-Israeli community itself. The transformation ENP has succeeded in engineering is no less than extraordinary: scholastic gaps are closing, educational performance

is improving, risk situations are decreasing and empowerment is broadening with each passing year.

Yet the need is still great for those not yet being touched by ENP’s work and who have been identified as being in dire need of ENP’s interventions. Thanks to Federation support, ENP can expand its reach to include more children, parents and families in its proven-successful work.

World ORT’s core mission is to work for advancement of Jewish and non-Jewish people, wherever they are, and to foster economic self-sufficiency through training and education.

World ORT’s worldwide presence includes projects on five continents, including schools and colleges in Uruguay, Mexico, Argentina, France, Israel, FSU and elsewhere. World ORT transforms educational opportunities for students in the social and geographic periphery, with major operations in Israel and FSU. This year World ORT received financial and operational responsibility for four

youth village schools, which serve some of Israel’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

In the FSU, ORT is pivotal in Jewish community renewal through its 53 educational institutions and projects including a network of 16 Jewish day schools. A recently completed program to transform ORT schools in Vilnius, Kishinev and Kiev into world-class educational complexes and add elementary schools is the beginning of a major new campaign to further strengthen Jewish identity there.

Anshei Emuna is a Modern Orthodox congregation located near Jog and Linton in Delray Beach. Planning has begun for 2016-2017, with exciting and more frequent programs. The first scholar-in-residence has been confirmed and numerous Shabbatons, lectures and shiurim

B’nai Torah is thrilled to announce the renovation of their sanctuary! Construction from June 18-August 20 will have the sanctuary back for the High Holy Days with a brand new look. The remodeling includes a revamped color scheme with new seating and carpeting, additional

handrails on the bima and updated electronics. They are also enhancing technology available for hearing-impaired congregants. They are excited to bring an even more beautiful and accessible sanctuary to the B’nai Torah family.

Congregation Shaarei Kodesh, in partnership with the IJKL, welcomed Rabbi David Ingber, named one of Newsweek’s most newsworthy Jews in America, for a Saturday evening titled, “Let It Go, Let in God.” Rabbi Ingber, along with Rabbi David Baum and

Cantor Yakov Hadash of Shaarei Kodesh, led the congregation in story and song. The congregation looks forward to three more scholars in residence next year, including Rabbi Ben Shalva from 9/23-25 and Rabbi Sid Schwarz, 11/18-20.

Yes, it is true! The children of Shirat Shalom LOVE Hebrew School! Congregation Shirat Shalom invites the community to find out why their students always leave the Hebrew School smiling, at an Open House from 5:00-

6:30 pm on August 24 at Loggers’ Run Middle School, 11584 West Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton. With minimal membership dues and affordable tuition, they believe parents will leave smiling, too!

Members of Congregation Beth Adam enjoy getting together. They celebrated Passover with a Community Seder for more than 40 people. Everyone also joined together for an end of the school year and membership

picnic, where they celebrated the children’s accomplishments, barbequed hotdogs and hamburgers, and played games from kickball to chess.

Chabad of East Boca recently celebrated the graduation of its 5th class of students at Machon Menachem – the Boca Raton Rabbinical College. The students completed an intensive period of study as well as community

outreach. They visited homes, offices, hospitals and assisted living facilities where they brought the joy of the Jewish holidays to hundreds, and conducted youth and teen programs throughout the area.

The congregation welcomed two new Torah scrolls and more than 100 new members this year. Rapid growth led them to host five Shabbat morning minyanim. The annual Scholar-in-Residence program was well received, as were book reviews, theater parties and other special events. Congregation

Torah Ohr commemorated Yom HaZikaron and joyously celebrated Yom HaAtzmaut and Yom Yerushalayim. For a third consecutive year, the synagogue conducted the very successful “Century Village Connects” outreach program funded by the Federation.

Temple Beth Shalom is proud of its many events. Israel Bonds honored Ritual Director Judith Gannon at a breakfast where many bonds were purchased. At a Federation “Coffee and Conversation,” the community learned about Federation’s work. Shir Appeal, a Jewish a cappella

group from Tufts University, entertained. For Tu B’Shevat, JNF held a breakfast and concert and the temple sponsored a dinner. The temple welcomes all to future events, including its Federation-sponsored Adult Education Program.
