Competition Etiquette Calisthenics Victoria has developed guidelines for appropriate behavior at competitions. The guidelines are reproduced below for your reference. It is imperative that the guidelines are reviewed and adhered to by parents, audience members, coaches and competitors. Those that do not comply will be requested to leave the venue. For All (Parents, Audience members and Coaches) • Show respect for those volunteering their time to help the competition run smoothly, such as door people and marshals and obey their rules. • Observe theatre rules on where you can eat or drink. • Respect participants and fellow audience members by not talking whilst a team is on stage. • Give recognition to all teams who perform on the stage, but remember not to call out the name of the team. We don’t want the adjudicator to know which teams are competing. • Be quiet around the stage area, as you can be heard from most dressing rooms and in the audience. • Keep all your belongings together as there are others using the dressing room. Personal items and valuables should be left with a representative of your club. (CVI and its ancillary organisations/committees and theatres will not be responsible for any losses) • Stay in the theatre for all speeches and aggregate presentations. • Clean and tidy the dressing rooms at the completion of competitions. • Do not talk to the Adjudicator during the competition, even if you know her. • Flashlights, videos, cameras, mobile telephones or pagers are not to be operated in the theatre. • Do not move around the theatre during an item. • Observe all Smoke Free designated areas. For Competitors • Tracksuits and shoes should be worn in the theatre at all times. • Wear tracksuit pants and socks for warming up. • Do not lean or press against the walls when wearing leg tan or lipstick. • Competitors shall not sit in the first two rows of the theatre. • Do not verbally criticise your fellow competitors or the Adjudicator. • For the comfort of those around you, you should refrain from walking around backstage in your body suit.

Insights from a Chaddy Mum Bronwyn Lockhart is the paragon of a calisthenics parent and has had a long association with Chadstone. At our 60th celebrations, she articulated beautifully her thoughts about her experiences, and these are reproduced here. When Katie asked me to speak at the 60th anniversary, I felt somewhat daunted - how could I condense my experiences over 26 years - three daughters, four training venues, 13 coaches, and 755 million sequins, into a three minute talk?? I decided to just share some thoughts, as they came to me. Back in 1989, we had just moved to Chadstone, Anna was 7 and wanted to do some dancing. New to the area, she made friends with some girls at school who did calisthenics, and invited her along. It seemed perfect, I had three little kids, no car, and classes were just through our back fence at the local church hall. Anna was hooked from the first class, me not so, with the demands of a calisth mum in those days being overwhelming and onerous. (Costumes were handed to you in a bag and you either sewed it yourself or found someone to sew it for you - and brought it back the next week, ready for the next bit to be given to you!!) - there was no such thing as "I'm too busy" or "I can't sew"- you just did it!! However, I persevered, and before long Jess was old enough and having spent her first four years watching Anna and the "big girls" she already loved the sport and couldn’t wait to join. Elise came along, and at first was a reluctant participant. -- "I don't want to be a dumb SALicenics girl", her response to attending her first tinies class! Eventually she did join in and had several fun years of being a not at all "dumb Salicenics girl". I have seen calisthenics and specifically Chaddy, produce some wonderful qualities in my girls - poise, confidence, the ability to speak or perform publicly, the value of working on and at mastering a move or routine, the value of team work, the value of sticking with the team through the highs and the lows of any team sport, and of course, many friends, some of whom feel like they’re almost part of our family! They have learnt that you can win with humility, but that you don't always have to win to be successful ( we all know of course, it’s so much more fun when you do win though!!). We have faced hard times together both at a club level and a personal family level, and the friendships and support of girls, coaches and parents, have helped us through these difficulties, and as a result I like to think we have become better people. I started out as a very reluctant calisthenics mum, just watching my little girl then girls, and grudgingly

doing what needed to be done. Over the years, I found myself becoming more involved, firstly as group rep, then Secretary, then protestingly, president for a while. By then Chaddy had come to be almost a second family and it was an honour to serve the club in this role. Of course one of the highlights of this period was when we finally took ownership from the Scouts of our current hall, what an asset it is to own our own venue! Now, I'm back to being mostly a mum who watches, (although there again seems to be far more sewing of costumes than I would prefer to do!) Watching both Anna and Jess, and their stunning seniors team, and watching Jess's gorgeous little subbies, never gets tired. I still get teary, often in aesthetics, but also sometimes just at the beauty and mastery of a team working together, to produce the best performance they can. I love watching the little ones remember to stretch their feet, and keep their heads up, and perfect their routines, and I love watching the seniors master their complicated and technical choreography, (while still remembering to stretch their feet and keep their heads up!) I’ve seen many changes within Calisthenics and within Chaddy and I think it is a better sport and a better club as a result. I like to think the new mums who come along are better "looked after" now than my bewildering experience all those years ago! I have seen the club look dauntingly like it might fold, with numbers very low- one year we created "Jinters" - a combined team of juniors and inters, competing as Inters. It was an experiment but the girls all had a great, fun year and it kept girls in the club until there were enough the following year to have the two sections. Again, when numbers were very low, Tiffany Drew arrived with her whole previously non-competitive club to join us at Chaddy, thus almost single-handedly saving the club in this instance. We have laughed, cried, rejoiced and despaired at times but always, somehow, we have kept going to now where I feel the club is in a very healthy state and in very safe hands for the future years. We have a modern, strategic, progressive thinking committee; Young, talented, and enthusiastic coaches, together with a technical director and coach mentor, and of course wonderful talented team members, and lovely families, mean our Chaddy is now going from strength to strength. I look forward to many more years of being a Chaddy mum (and maybe even a Grandma one day!) I wish the club the very best in the coming years. - May our Coaches be content, our participants be plentiful, our families be fabulous and our medals be gold!!

Coaches Updates

Jacqui Lavery – Tinies Wow! Dress rehearsal was a fantastic way for the tinies to display to their parents just how much they have learnt so far this year. Freearm is looking amazing and I'm sure will impress the judges at competition. Rods is getting better every single week and everyone loved the costume and headpieces (you will just have to wait to see them if you haven't already). Dance is slowly coming together with everyone remembering the different roles they play but we must remember to smile! And last but not least song.... practice, practice, practice. It was so much better at the dress rehearsal but we still need to sing louder. A massive thank you to my mum and my auntie for all their hard work getting costumes and headpieces ready for the day and also to Tiffany for her words of wisdom and support. Competitions are going to be exciting!

Jess Lockhart - Subbies The subbies delighted me at the dress rehearsal! They looked beautiful and confident and are starting to work as a team. Lots of work still to do on our technique but I'm excited about the potential they have to wow our audiences! I'm sure the parents watching were very proud. Costumes are almost complete and they look gorgeous! Thanks for all the help and support I've received from many mums (including my own!) and my assistant Stace, and helpers Jaz and Jordyn. Bring on competition season, we'll be ready for you!

Melanie Cousin – Juniors Our juniors are working hard on all items to be ready for our first comp in August. We have had a lot of girls away on holidays & camps which affected our stage rehearsal & has made it tricky to set our team spirit alight but I feel confident that we will be set to go when we need to be. Unfortunately we did also lose one of our team one juniors to state team basketball commitments which has meant major shuffling & reorganization for both teams, as well as some injuries that have cropped up from outside calisthenics. Costumes are looking gorgeous & Leah continues to run around & offer amazing

support. Lots of work to come but I'm proud of how hard our girls work on the floor each week for me.

Ella Freeman – Inters Inters Stage rehearsal was definitely a success. It was great to get all the work on stage and be able to see everything come together, judge whether our costumes, headpieces, props etc would work or needed adjustments.

I'm so proud of the effort each and every one of my inters put into their items on stage. They all worked so hard from the minute we said go right until the very end. I know how hard it can be to do that many performances in such a short amount of time, and there were no complaints, just hard work and I want to thank them all for showing such dedication to their calisthenics & their team :). Thanks to Kristen for helping out.

We've since watched the videos at class, and looked at what parts of the routines we did well and what areas need improvement. Self-reflection is a very good learning tool, and I think the girls enjoyed watching their work on stage too, to give them an idea what they work so hard for. Now onwards and upwards till our first comp, only 4 more classes, but we will be ready. Can't wait to get the items on stage again :).

Melanie Cousin – Seniors Our stage rehearsal went quite well, a few nerves to start with but we settled and really pushed to get some great work done. A big Thankyou for Tiff for coming and sharing some thoughts with Katie and I. Our costumes are looking great & coming along nicely. We are putting finishing touches on all our items now and sinking our teeth into song & dance and revue in preparation for our first comp. Katie and I were thrilled with how hard our girls worked at stage rehearsal - it's a sign of great things to come and a delight to watch. Bron is doing a wonderful job of organizing bits & pieces. Another month of hard work to come but looking forward to hitting the stage with this group of beautiful seniors.
