This presentation provides an overview of the process of preparing and submitting a scholarly manuscript for publication. Drawing on the experiences of authors of scholarly writings, peer reviewers, and journal editors, we seek to clarify the publication process and to offer advice designed to improve a manuscript’s prospects of publication. To demonstrate the process, I describe specific publication procedures for journals of the American Psychological Association.

The editor of each journal is responsible for the quality and content of the journal. Journal editors look for manuscripts that(a) contribute significantly to the content area covered by the journal, (b) communicate with clarity and conciseness, and (c) follow style guidelines.
However, the editor has the final editorial authority and may make a decision other than that recommended by the reviewers.
