• 35 years of age• Lived in country

previous 14 years

• Over half lawyers• Mostly middle to upper class• Predominantly White males with Anglo Heritage

(No Poles, Italians, or Jews, for instance)• Most have some military experience, many

elected because of previous military exploits• All having discernable religious affiliations were

Christian (Jefferson was a deist)• One Catholic, JFK

C. Terms

• The tradition was for Presidents to serve for a maximum of two terms until Franklin Roosevelt was elected to a fourth term in 1944.

• The 22nd Amendment (ratified in 1951) set a maximum of two terms in office

D. Salary and Benefits

• The Presidential salary is $400,000 per year

• The use of Air Force One

• a substantial expense and living allowance

• About $200,000 a year retirement, even if you only serve one term!

• President earns far less than CEO’s

A. Chief of State

• Ceremonial head of the nation. – Symbol of America

– Has no real political power in this role, it is symbolic

• In this role the President is the personal representative of you and other Americans.

• Vested with the executive power– Domestic powers– Foreign powers

• the President sees that the laws of the nation are carried out (executed and enforced).

• Director of the Federal government– Head of all executive departments.– FBI,CIA,IRS etc.– Employs nearly 2.7 million employees

• Manages the executive branch of the U.S. government

• Conducts American foreign policy.– Speeches– Ambassadors– Diplomats– The President

• Leader of the Free world.

• The President heads our armed forces.– Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines.– Over 1.4 million troops

• The President represents our nation in times of peace and war.

A. The Official duties

• The Vice President is to preside over the Senate. – May only cast a deciding vote in a tie.

• The Vice President becomes President should the President die while in office.

massive, needs support.– The President can assign

duties to V.P.– V.P. can work as an

advisor, a representative of the White House, and coordinate with Congress.
