    What Is Marketing?

    Marketing deals with identifying and meeting human andsocial needs. One of the shortest definitions of marketing is"meeting needs profitably."

    OR

    The American Marketing Association offers the followingformal definition: Marketing is an organizational functionand a set of processes for creating, communicating, and

    delivering value to customers and for managing customerrelationships in ways that benefit the organization and itsstake holders.

    What Is Marketed?

    GOODS: Physical goods constitute the bulk of most countries' production and marketing effort.Each year, U.S. companies alone market billions of fresh, canned and frozen food products andmillions of cars, refrigerators, television sets, machines, and various other mainstays of a moderneconomy.

    SERVICES: As economies advance, a growing proportion of their activities is focused on theproduction of services. The U.S. economy today consists of a 70-30 services-to-goods mix. Servicesinclude the work of airlines, hotels, car rental firms, barbers and beauticians, maintenance andrepair people etc.

    EVENTS: Marketers promote time-based events, such as major trade shows, artistic performances,and company anniversaries. Global sporting events such as the Olympics or World Cup arepromoted aggressively to both companies and fans.

    EXPERIENCES: By orchestrating several services and goods, a firm can create, stage, and marketexperiences. Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom represents experiential marketing: Customersvisit a fairy kingdom, a pirate ship, or a haunted house. So does the Hard Rock Cafe, wherecustomers can enjoy a meal or see a band in a live concert.

    What Is Marketed?

    PERSONS: Celebrity marketing is a major business. Today, every major film star has an agent, apersonal manager, and ties to a public relations agency. Artists, musicians, CEOs, physicians, high-profile lawyers and financiers, and other professionals are also getting help from celebritymarketers.

    PLACES: Cities, states, regions, and whole nations compete actively to attract tourists, factories,company headquarters, and new residents. Place marketers include economic developmentspecialists, real estate agents, commercial banks, local business associations, and advertising andpublic relations agencies.

    PROPERTY: Properties are intangible rights of ownership of either real property (real estate) orfinancial property (stocks and bonds). Properties are bought and sold, and this requires marketing.

    ORGANIZATIONS: Organizations actively work to build a strong, favorable, and unique image in the

    minds of their target publics. Companies spend money on corporate identity ads. Philips, the Dutchelectronics company, puts out ads with the tag line "Let's Make Things Better." In the UnitedKingdom, Tesco's "Every Little Bit Helps" marketing program has vaulted it to the top of thesupermarket chains in that country.

    What Is Marketed?

    INFORMATION: Information can be produced andmarketed as a product. This is essentially what schoolsand universities produce and distribute at a price toparents, students, and communities.

    IDEA: Every market offering includes a basic idea.Charles Revson of Revlon observed: "In the factory, wemake cosmetics; in the store we sell hope." Productsand services are platforms for delivering some idea orbenefit. Social marketers are busy promoting suchideas as "Friends Don't Let Friends Drive Drunk" and "AMind Is a Terrible Thing to Waste."

    Who Markets?

    MARKETER AND PROSPECTS: A marketer is someonewho seeks a response (attention, a purchase, a vote, adonation) from another party, called the prospect. Iftwo parties are seeking to sell something to each other,

    we call them both marketers.

    Marketers are responsible for demand management.Marketing managers seek to influence the level,

    timing, and composition of demand to meet theorganization's objectives. Eight demand states arepossible:

    Negative demand- Consumers dislike the product and may even pay a price toavoid it.

    Nonexistent demand - Consumers may be unaware or uninterested in the product.

    Latent demand - Consumers may share a strong need that cannot be satisfied byan existing product.

    Declining demand - Consumers begin to buy the product less frequently or not atall.

    Irregular demand - Consumer purchases vary on a seasonal, monthly, weekly,daily, or even hourly basis.

    Full demand - Consumers are adequately buying all products put into the

    marketplace. Overfull demand - More consumers would like to buy the product than can be

    satisfied.

    Unwholesome demand - Consumers may be attracted to products that haveundesirable social consequences.

    How Business and Marketing Are

    Changing We can say with some confidence that "the marketplace isn't what it used

    to be." It is radically different as a result of major, sometimes interlinkingsocietal forces that have created new behaviors, new opportunities, andnew challenges:

    Changing technology: The digital revolution has created an InformationAge. The Industrial Age was characterized by mass production and massconsumption, stores stuffed with inventory, ads everywhere, and rampantdiscounting. The Information Age promises to lead to more accurate levelsof production, more targeted communications, and more relevant pricing.

    Globalization: Technological advances in transportation, shipping, andcommunication have made it easier for companies to market in othercountries and easier for consumers to buy products and services frommarketers in other countries.

    How Business and Marketing Are

    Changing Privatization: Many countries have converted public companies to private

    ownership and management to increase their efficiency, such as British Airwaysand British Telecom in the United Kingdom.

    Customer empowerment: Customers increasingly expect higher quality and serviceand some customization. They are more and more time-starved and want more

    convenience.

    Customization: The company is able to produce individually differentiated goodswhether ordered in person, on the phone, or online. By going online, companiesessentially enable consumers to design their own goods.

    Heightened competition: Brand manufacturers are facing intense competitionfrom domestic and foreign brands, which is resulting in rising promotion costs andshrinking profit margins. They are being further buffeted by powerful retailers whocommand limited shelf space and are putting out their own store brands incompetition with national brands.

    Retail transformation: Small retailers are

    succumbing to the growing power of giant

    retailers and "category killers.

    entrepreneurial retailers are building

    The Production Concept: The production concept isone of the oldest concepts in business. It holds thatconsumers will prefer products that are widelyavailable and inexpensive. Managers of production-

    oriented businesses concentrate on achieving highproduction efficiency, low costs, and mass distribution.

    The Product Concept: The product concept holds thatconsumers will favor those products that offer the

    most quality, performance, or innovative features.Managers in these organizations focus on makingsuperior products and improving them over time.

    Company Orientations Toward the

    Marketplace The Selling Concept: The selling concept holds that consumers and

    businesses, if left alone, will not buy enough of the organization'sproducts. The organization must, therefore, undertake anaggressive selling and promotion effort. The selling concept isepitomized in the thinking of Sergio Zyman, Coca-Cola's former vice

    president of marketing: The purpose of marketing is to sell morestuff to more people more often for more money in order to makemore profit.

    The Marketing Concept: The marketing concept emerged in themid-1950s. Instead of a product-centered, "make-and-sell"philosophy, business shifted to a customer-centered, "sense-and-

    respond" philosophy. Instead of "hunting," marketing is"gardening." The job is not to find the right customers for yourproducts, but the right products for your customers.

    The holistic marketing concept is based on thedevelopment, design, and implementation of

    Components of Holistic marketing

    RELATIONSHIP MARKETING: Relationship marketing has the aim of buildingmutually satisfying long-term relationships with key partiescustomers, suppliers,distributors etc.

    INTEGRATED MARKETING: The marketer's task is to devise marketing activitiesand assemble fully integrated marketing programs to create, communicate, and

    deliver value for consumers.

    INTERNAL MARKETING : internal marketing, ensures that everyone in theorganization embraces appropriate marketing principles, especially seniormanagement. Internal marketing is the task of hiring, training, and motivatingemployees who want to serve customers well. Smart marketers recognize that

    marketing activities within the company can be as important as, or even more sothan, marketing activities directed outside the company. It makes no sense to

    promise excellent service before the company's staff is ready to provide it .

    NEEDS: Needs are the basic human requirements.People need food, air, water, clothing, and shelter tosurvive. People also have strong needs for education,and entertainment.

    WANTS: These needs become wants when they aredirected to specific objects that might satisfy the need.An American needs food but may want a hamburger,French fries, and a soft drink.

    DEMANDS: Demands are wants for specific productsbacked by an ability to pay. Many people want aMercedes; only a few are willing and able to buy one.

    OFFERINGS AND BRANDS: Companies addressneeds by putting forth a value proposition. Abrand is an offering from a known source. A

    brand name such as McDonald's carries manyassociations in the minds of people: hamburgers,fun, children, fast food, convenience, and goldenarches.

    VALUE AND SATISFACTION: The offering will be successful ifit delivers value and satisfaction to the target buyer. Thebuyer chooses between different offerings on the basis ofwhich is perceived to deliver the most value.

    MARKETING CHANNELS: To reach a target market, themarketer uses three kinds of marketing channels.

    Communication Channels: deliver and receive messagesfrom target buyers, and include newspapers, magazines,

    radio, television, mail, telephone, billboards, posters etc.Marketers are increasingly adding dialogue channels (e-mail and toll-free numbers) to counterbalance the morenormal monologue channels (such as ads).

    The marketer uses distribution channels todisplay, sell, or deliver the physical product orservice(s) to the buyer or user. They include

    distributors, wholesalers, retailers, and agents.

    The marketer also uses service channels to carryout transactions with potential buyers. Service

    channels include warehouses, transportationcompanies, banks, and insurance companies that

    facilitate transactions.

    Trends, and Tasks SUPPLY CHAIN: Where as marketing channels connect the marketer to the target

    buyers, the supply chain describes a longer channel stretching from raw materialsto components to final products that are carried to final buyers.

    COMPETITION: Competition includes all the actual and potential rival offeringsand substitutes that a buyer might consider.

    MARKETING ENVIROMENT: Competition represents only one force in theenvironment in which the marketer operates. The marketing environment consistsof the task environment and the broad environment. The task environmentincludes the immediate actors involved in producing, distributing, and promotingthe offering. The main actors are the company, suppliers, distributors, dealers, andthe target customers.

    The broad environmentconsists of six components: demographic environment,economic environment, technological environment, political-legal environment,and social-cultural environment.

    MARKETING PLANNING: The marketing

    planning process consists of analyzing

    marketing opportunities; selecting target

    DEVELOPING MARKETING STRATEGIES AND PLANS: The first taskfacing Atlas is to identify its potential long-run opportunities givenits market experience and core competencies. Atlas can design itscameras with better features. It can also consider making a line ofvideo cameras, or it can use its core competency in optics to designa line of binoculars and telescopes.

    CAPTURING MARKETING INSIGHTS : To understand what ishappening inside and outside the company, Atlas needs a reliablemarketing information system; it will want to closely monitor itsmarketing environment. Atlas's microenvironment consists of all

    the players who affect the company's ability to produce and sellcamerassuppliers, marketing intermediaries, customers, andcompetitors. Its macro environment consists of demographic,economic, technological, political-legal, and social-cultural forcesthat affect sales and profits.

    Marketing Management Tasks

    CONNECTING WITH CUSTOMERS: Atlas must consider how to best createvalue for its chosen target markets and develop strong, profitable, long-term relationships with customers. To do so, Atlas needs to understandconsumer markets. How many households plan to buy cameras? Whobuys and why do they buy? What are they looking for in the way offeatures and prices? Where do they shop? What are their images of

    different brands? BUILDING STRONG BRANDS: Atlas must understand the strengths and

    weaknesses of different brands. It must carry out a competitive analysis togauge the different strategies that are used by competitive brands.

    SHAPING THE MARKET OFFERING: At the heart of the marketing programis the productthe firm's tangible offering to the market, which includes

    the product quality, design, features, and packaging. As part of its productoffering, Atlas may provide various services, such as leasing, delivery,repair, and training. Such support services can provide a competitiveadvantage in the global marketplace.

    DELIVERING VALUE: Atlas must also adequately communicate thevalue embodied by its products and services to the target market.Marketing communications activities are the means by which firmsattempt to inform, persuade, and remind consumersdirectly orindirectlyabout the brands they sell. Atlas has to develop anintegrated marketing communication program that maximizes theindividual and collective contribution of all communicationactivities.

    CREATING LONG TERM GROWTH: Atlas must also take a long-termview of its products and brands and how its profits should begrown. Based on its product positioning, it must initiate new-

    product development, testing, and launching . The strategy also willhave to take into account changing global opportunities andchallenges .
