The 2014-2015 Council Grove Middle School cheerleaders worked hard throughout the summer. They all attended K-State cheer camp, and worked weekly on new cheers for this years football and basketball games. They sold Thirty-One products to raise money for their uniforms, and raised a little over $700. They also sold colorful trash bags. They hope to work with the High School cheerleaders to work on more stunting.

“The hardest part of being the sponsor for the cheerleaders is finding the time to commit to practicing,” says Dana Reddick the CGMS cheerleading sponsor. The cheerleaders are also busy with school, sports, dance or other activities that is making it hard to find time to practice.

Mrs. Reddick was a cheerleader for Council Grove Middle School from 1990-1991. She went to many cheer camps and took dance from Jill Fitzgerald for fifteen years. In middle school her cheer sponsor was Miss Disberger. When she got to high school she was a Bravette.

Their hard work will be seen throughout the football and basketball seasons. They look forward to cheering at all of the upcoming games.

I’m in 8th grade, so I have had to deal with the time between classes in middle school for three years now, and I think that they are too short. 120 seconds is not enough for students who have trouble with their lockers not to be late to class. I have noticed that the students that have trouble with lockers carry their books and such in their bags, making them oversized and dangerous for teachers walking around the room. I agree that bags can be dangerous to people around the carrier, but the kids that carry their locker in their bag can be hurtful. Some students carry most of their books around in their bag, which can cause the student back problems. Back problems can affect the way you play sports, how you pay attention in class, and how you do everyday chores. Oversized backpacks have also caused teachers to trip over them and one trip caused a teacher to get surgery in her knee. Oversized backpacks are a huge sign of being unorganized, which a lot of students have. I agree that bags are very helpful to us also. I personally carry one around, but it does not contain anything that makes it oversized and bulky. It keeps you organized and straight. I also carry some of my sports items in there such as my volleyball pads, clothes for practice, when the time comes my track spikes. When games start, I will put my sports stuff in a duffel bag that will stay in the gym locker room, and lots of girls will do the same. Bags to me are not a problem, it just show organization from those who don’t stuff them full of our locker items. I asked Mr. Shelangouski what he thinks about the bags being carried around, and if they do get banned, would he want a longer time between classes. Shelangouski’s reply, I do not care if kids carry bags because two minutes is a very short amount of time. However, I do not like it when they load it with everything in their locker. I do believe we should have more time for passing, but only three minutes, not anything more.” I agree completely with Mr. Shelangouski. For people who have trouble with lockers, two minutes is a struggle. When they get to class after grabbing some random thing from their locker realize they brought the wrong thing to class and have to go back to get it anyways, so why not give extra time for students to get their stuff? It would help teachers be a little less stressed because students are unorganized. It would help the students with being more organized. Also, it would be an advantage to those who have unorganized bags and lockers. I think the time should be longer!

2014 Council Grove MS Football Preview By Tucker Day This past week I had a chat with head Middle School football coach Steve Casey and he was very excited about his first year as coach. He had very high expectations for the team this year. He said he expects “the JR High team to get better everyday and to work hard”. He said it was key for everyone to play their best and to have the team and everyone as individuals to improve day to day. Now I myself play football, and coach is a fun coach, that is as long as you don't make him mad. Once you hear the magical word, “GUTCHECK!!” it means you either didn’t hustle, or someone else didn’t hustle. Effort, I believe is the big thing with him and next I’ll ask him just what exactly it means to the head coach and the advantages and maybe some disadvantages that go with it. When I asked him what is the best and worst parts and he said that an advantage is seeing the improvement in the players so far. Then when I asked him what the worst part is, he said it’s the paperwork, however, he said, there’s yet to be very much to this point. Coach Casey has plenty of experience playing football, starting from his years here at CG to Fort Scott and finally at Emporia State.

It means a lot to coach Casey, being able to coach at his alma mater Council Grove. He believes Council Grove’s always should be a football power. He also believes that now having coach Weber that were on our way! He says the reality of getting to be involved the day-to-day process really gets him fired up! Coach was really fun to talk to and as a player, is a fun yet intense coach, but we all get why he's intense. It’s because he has a love for the great game of football that I hope myself and my team can come to be like him. Score from Thursday, Braves throttle Lyndon 36-14 after leading 30-0 at the half.

Cross County Runs It’s Way into the News

By: Cooper Blackledge

This article is about the cross-country team and it’s coaching staff. After interviewing Coach Joshua Gant he says He said “We have weekly runs and some of them even went to weights this summer to also help them prepare.” He also said he had “8 junior high kids and 27 high school kids try out this year.” He also said “Each week the runners set a goal for themselves and they try to beat their personal best. They also compete for individual and team medals.” He said, “You can tell if they improved if their time is better than the week before.” He said “You can join all you have to do is show up and you can run”. Everybody can run! He said, “His practices are usually about an hour and a half. He said the hardest part about coaching is keeping track of all the team members! They can get pretty spread out at practice. He said junior high ran about 10 total miles last week, HS about 19. He even said we run all over CG and sometimes out to the lake. This is what he said when I asked him what they do when the weather is bad, unless it is lightening we run outside...if we have to be indoors we run around the inside of the HS, or workout in the weight room.

Mrs. Bachura is the newest teacher in Council Grove Middle School, but this isn’t her first rodeo. This is her 27th year of teaching! She has taught grades ranging from Pre-K to Ninth grade. She’s taught P.E., computer classes, business, and health! She is currently teaching Business Essentials to all Eighth graders! She sponsors FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), at the high school. She is also the career and technical education coordinator for the entire 417 district.

She found out she would start teaching in this very school, in late May. She really likes it at CGMS so far. She taught Prairie Heights, (K-8th grade) for a whooping 13 years. She’s not new to the world of

after-school activities, she coached several sports, those including; volleyball, basketball, track and softball, however she does not coach anything currently. She’s here at Council Grove Middle School because she has shared time with us, and the high school. After Mrs. Burton retired last year, Mrs. Bachura was asked to cover some of her classes. Her class; business essentials entails, economics, technology, keyboarding, and of course, business. Her inspiration to become a teacher was first sparked by her parents; who were in fact, teachers! She saw how much of an impact they made, and she wanted to do the same job. Mrs. Bachura is so excited to be teaching this year, and for all of you wanting to know about your favorite business essentials teacher; here it is.

Meet the Math Teacher By Noah Hughes Mr. Hauser came to us from a small town of Humboldt Kansas located on US Highway 169. Do you know where that is? Look it up! He is the new 6th and 7th grade math teacher at Council Grove Middle School. For fun he likes to go golfing during his spare time and hang out with friends around a campfire. Mr. Hauser strongly dislikes the Kansas City Chiefs and people not doing their job correctly to the best of their ability. He is also scared of people who keep snakes in their house. He chose math as his subject area to teach because it was the subject that came easiest to him in school. He became a teacher because his 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Mauk, was always excited about school and learning. He also is an assistant coach for middle school volleyball. We are pleased to have him on staff. Stop by and meet him soon if you haven’t yet!

FCA Leading the Way

By Chloe Berner Anyone who cares and participates and want to learn about God can be in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes that Mr. Shelangouski is leading at Council Grove Middle School. They talk about life lessons in the Bible relating it to sports and activities and home life. They also have an opportunity to attend a weekend camp in September and again in the spring of 2015. FCA starts during seminar time and ends during seminar time. Coach Shelangouski loves teaching and he is the 7th grade English/Language Arts and computer apps for 7th grade at Council Grove Middle School. If he taught something else it would be history. He’s been coaching for ten years. He’s coached everything but softball and wrestling. He’s coached all levels of kids. His favorite food is his own Gourmet Burger. His favorite color is blue.

Mrs. Dingler, who teaches science at Council Grove Middle School is starting a book club this year. The M.S. book club will be every other Friday during seminar time and any student can participate. The meetings will be the same week as the FCA meeting. Mrs. Dingler loved to go to school as a kid and enjoyed learning new things. She had awesome teachers who inspired her on the way. Reading is so relaxing for her and makes her happy. She says that her and her daughter love to go to bookstores and discuss the books they are reading together. The first book they will read is the Emerald Atlas after picking it from a list. I suggest that you read the book and join the club!
