CFSC NEWSLETTER May 31, 2016
Volume 11, Issue 10
FROM THE PRESIDENT BY CHRIS TINCHER
Welcome to our final newsletter of the Season! So many great things have happened in our club this month:
Our By Laws were approved on May 1 along with the slate for the 2016-2017 board.
We held a fabulous recital along with our first recognition event. Skaters were recognized for their
accomplishments in testing and our Glide with Pride Program.
Our Good Sports Award was presented to Faith Zaruba.
We held our first on ice workshop with The Next Ice Age’s Nathan Birch teaching a Master Class to 40 of
our skaters.
34 of our Skaters participated in the annual May Day competition at the Gardens.
US Figure Skating recognized four of our seniors, Sophie Hampton, Kendall Robey, Ana Shimeall and
Tiffany Wang for their skating and academic success.
I hope you will take the time to read details of all of these events and more in the newsletter as well as ‘like’ us on
FaceBook and frequent the website. We hope to continue to spread the good news of our skaters.
We will be switching to a new email service for 2016-2017 so please look out for email from mailchimp and the
[email protected] address going forward. If you have not been receiving emails from both yahoo
and the new service please send a note to [email protected] and we will try to fix it as soon as
possible.
As we prepare for the 2016 -2017 season we have lots of exciting workshops and activities planned but we need
your help and your ideas. Please email the board with your feedback or where you would be willing to help. You
are always welcome at our board meetings. They will be posted on the website and in the newsletter. Look for an
email on membership for the 2016-2017 season to be coming soon. Remember you must be registered for the

Next Ice Age Workshop by Emma Pomeranz
On May 15th, 34 skaters of all ages participated in a Next Ice Age Workshop led by Nathan Birch. The
Next Ice Age is an organization started by Nathan Birch and Tim Murphy that has performed all over the
country with the likes of legends such as Dorothy Hamill.
Nathan Birch brought the characteristics of NIA style skating to the workshop in order to improve skaters'
elegance and power when performing. There were two sessions, one for younger skaters, and a later class
for more experienced skaters. Birch taught a series of exercises that help skaters perfect the art of skating
with beauty and grace. His talent and strong guidance aided in making the classes very successful! Skaters
were fortunate in improving their performance skills and their ability to skate in groups. Thank you so
much to Nathan Birch for taking time out of his busy schedule to teach these skaters!

May Recital
The Spring Recital held on Sunday May 1st was a very well-attended event, showcasing over 70 club and Learn-to-Skate skaters and a large audience of family and friends. The evening started with a skills demonstration of over 30 learn-to-skate students, under the guidance of coach Pat Muth and Wende Jones with assistance from our very own Glide with Pride Instructors. The students skated in patterns and showcased their abilities, confidence on the ice and enthusiasm for the sport.
30 club skaters performed their individual freeskate and dance programs ranging from Basic Skills through Intermediate, as well as Pre-Juvenile Dance, in preparation for the May Day competition the following weekend. The Chesapeake Sapphires performed their Theatre On Ice Freeskate program, choreographed to selections from "High School Musical."
Immediately following the recital was an awards ceremony recognizing Faith Zaruba as our 2016 Good Sport Award recipient, our graduating seniors, and our skaters who passed senior tests during this past year.
