The selecTion of This year’s Annual Report theme—Bountiful Harvest—may seem odd to those of you who have been long connected to the school and vividly recall its farming era. Without crops to pull in several times over the course of a summer, or meat and flowers to deliver to your door, what could we, now some 30 years removed from farming days, possibly be imagining?

We take our cue from the past. charles W. shreiner, Jr., addressing the newcomen society in north America, concluded his remarks about the work of the school by saying, “the church farm school will continue to graduate young men who will be able to make the world a better place because they have learned manliness, respect and an appreciation for hard work and perseverance.” should that statement be the re-sown seed of his, and his son terry’s, efforts to continue his father’s vision for boys otherwise languishing at the margins of our great society? then we have indeed pulled from another generation of boys this year a bountiful harvest of young men ready to do their part. thirty four boys are on their way; all of whom will be attending first-rate undergraduate schools with most securing full or significant scholarships. Please look for their stories and destinations within these pages.

such an achievement—or harvest—is made possible by another intention of our theme, the important and ever-increasing philanthropic support it takes to close an annual operating deficit created by what it takes to run and staff the school program and the meager tuition most of our families can afford. this year’s annual fund reaped more than $900,000 in unrestricted gifts to close an annual operating deficit created by what it takes to run and staff the school program while ensuring the school remains affordable for all of our students.

We believe that God gives this growth and that both the boys and you who so generously support them are agents of God’s divine will, enabling us to carry on with our efforts to educate and raise them on this special campus. from the bottom of our hearts, thank you for each and every blessing of prayerful and financial support. We would not exist without you and our harvest would otherwise be empty.

recenTly aT a large family gathering i caught my 11-year-old grand-nephew Patrick sticking his half-chewed potato chip into the communal guacamole bowl for a “double-dip.” When i (jokingly) called him on it, he replied, in all seriousness, “it’s ok, uncle mark—we’re all related.”

that got a big laugh, but behind Patrick’s utterly guileless response lay a larger truth: when we see others as family, we give more, accept more, forgive more and love more—we to them; they to us.

Another example of the expansive bonds of family was driven home to me earlier this year when the church farm school board of directors had dinner with the 2014 class of graduating seniors. one young man, as sincere as my grand-nephew Patrick, told his fellow students that he loved them and considered them family. to me this stood out as one of the proudest achievements these young men, and church farm school, could have accomplished. for our seniors, it was a moment of true enlightenment: that so many young men from such divergent backgrounds could mature into caring, and loving, adults. And for cfs, it was a sign that the hard work, dedication—and yes, love—of our faculty and staff provided the nurturing environment where such a transformation could take place.

Each year in this report we honor the many contributors who continue to make it possible for cfs to create that special environment.

Without your support, we could not provide the intellectual and moral foundations that will serve our students—and our world—so well as they broaden their own definitions of “family.”

on behalf of the entire church farm community, i thank all of you who have helped our students gain that sense of family. And if you are new to church farm school, i ask you to consider joining our very special family.

i came To church farm school

four years ago—my grandmother didn’t want me to go to public school in Philadelphia. she wanted a better life for me. i felt so blessed coming here. Right away i met people from all kinds of backgrounds—it is really the most diverse place in the world! one of my friends is from Korea—i’ve learned a lot about respect for elders from him.

the small classes here make it easier to speak out and to learn at your own pace. if i don’t understand something, i can get help from peer tutors, i can join a study group or i can go to see the teacher during office hours.

At the school, we think a lot about success—what it really means to us beyond GPAs, money and status. i think it has to do with finding your own greatness.

You have to succeed for yourself—sure i want to be a credit to my family name, but i just have one life. i have to learn to make the right choices for the right reasons. We are peer-pressured for success at church farm school.

i’ve changed so much here—i walk differently, i dress differently, i see things differently. i think when you leave home, you leave your comfortable bubble. You really become who you are.

life is unpredicTable and our experiences, whether good or bad, influence our perspectives. The manner in which we respond to these experiences defines our character. Everyone is capable of overcoming insurmountable odds when nurtured with positive affirmations by an individual or community.

Collectively we make a difference in the world by supporting and encouraging youth in the pursuit of their dreams and aspirations. As a father of four, a priest in the larger community and a spiritual leader in an academic environment, I understand the importance of faith and perseverance. Church Farm School’s founder, The Rev. Dr. Charles Wesley Shreiner, also understood the perils of a difficult upbringing. Raised without a father, he worked at local farms to help support his mother and siblings. As the young Shreiner planted and weeded fields, the prospect of creating a transformational environment for boys of lesser opportunity began to take root. As members of the Church Farm School community, we are all called to plant seeds in

the minds of the young men in our care. We do so daily by nurturing their thoughts, dreams and aspirations, and by helping them to find meaning and purpose in their lives. Through our work as teachers, counselors and administrators, we continue to harvest the fertile soil on which this school was founded. I believe that life challenges can act as fertilizer, fortifying the importance of personal relationships and service to others. Each of us has within ourselves the ability to overcome our life challenges and thrive.

i believe that my role here at church farm school is to help students realize their potential, conquer their fears and live bountiful lives.

in may 1991, 11-year-old Alemayehu Addis left his family and most of their worldly possessions to escape the turmoil in his homeland of Ethiopia, settling in Philadelphia with his sister and mother. Addis’ mother sought a residential school where he could receive a rigorous education. upon learning about church farm school, he applied. “i later heard that i completely bombed the aptitude test,” Addis laughs. “but cfs took a chance on me.”

He entered 7th grade just three months after arriving in the united states. Adjusting to life in a new country is hard enough, but being thrust into boarding school life was doubly hard. “i cried every night for two weeks,” Addis recalls. comfort came through bonding with fellow African immigrants, particularly dempsey Woods from Liberia.

While meeting students with familiar backgrounds consoled Addis, the bonds he forged with those “unlike” himself were also extremely impactful. “cfs provided a comfortable environment in which i could connect with people of different backgrounds. i didn’t have to be someone i wasn’t.”

one of the strongest connections was with steve Loney. “We are still great friends,” Addis says. “i was his best man, and he was mine.” Loney joined the church farm school board of directors in 2009 and encouraged Addis to seek election. “i always thought of board membership as a way in which i could help the school and so i made that a long-term goal. but then i decided there was no point in waiting any longer. i want to give back now,” Addis, who was elected in 2014, says.

Addis brings vast experience to the cfs board: an electrical engineering degree from the university of Pennsylvania, u. s. Army tours in Afghanistan and iraq (where he earned two commendations and a bronze star) and currently, an it management and consulting job. “i am really excited about the changes the administration is making,” Addis says. “A stronger curriculum, an increased focus on development and recruiting… everything being done to modernize the school and put students in a better position to succeed.”

When connor gibbons ’14 started at a new middle school in 2008, he realized quickly that it wasn’t a good fit. His mother, debbie Gibbons, scurried to find a school with more structure. “i had passed church farm school many times, but didn’t know much about its mission or academics,” she recalls. debbie and connor attended a cfs open House, and as soon as they stepped on campus, connor exclaimed, “this is where i want to be.” fast-forward to today, and connor is a freshman at muhlenberg college, studying international relations and Russian (with a concentration in national security) alongside peers who were also all ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class.

connor started cfs as a day student in 8th and 9th grades, and then boarded from 10th-12th grades to get the “full Griffin experience.” being a part of cfs residential life has made the transition to college for both connor and his mom extremely smooth. “We weren’t worried about him leaving for college at all,” debbie says. “He had already done and experienced and overcome so many obstacles at cfs. We sent him off with full confidence that he was ready to make decisions that were smart.”

Having always been the “homeroom mom,” debbie got involved with the school immediately. she attended every Parent’s Association meeting, which evolved into her becoming its president for one year. “our main mission is to be the liaison between the administration and the parents so everyone feels like they know what is going on,” she says.

church farm school grows boys into men. they focus on the whole person—mind, body and spirit—so that they get the full understanding of who they are before they leave.

Although her tenure with the association is over, debbie’s support of the school will be a lifelong commitment. “i am an alumni parent that is actively sending parents to the school that i think are good candidates, and i will continue to support the school in any way i can,” she says.

as a nurse in The pennsylvania Army national Guard for 28 years, brigadier General (PA Ret.) Peggy Hengeveld saw first-hand the difficulties veterans face reintegrating into society, or worse, when a husband or wife dies while serving. together with her husband, cecil, a retired brigadier General who served for 33 years in the u.s. Army and Pennsylvania Army national Guard, as well as major General Eric Weller ’74, the Hengevelds helped create the cfs military scholarship fund. the fund helps military families bridge the financial gap of a church farm school education.

the idea for the fund sprang from the Hengevelds’ dual desire to recognize those who provide service to the united states and to further church farm school’s mission of sponsoring an education for those in need. “it’s not just the individual who serves in the military, it affects the entire family: the parents, the children, the siblings. Kids need a solid place to live when their parents are serving,” Cecil, a 1964 graduate of cfs, says. “And we wanted to do something over and above the annual fund.”

cecil knows well the solidity that comes from living at church farm school, and how it can aid single parents who want their children to be surrounded by loving, caring mentors in their absence. “many boys come to the school to get that extra sense of family that they may not have,” he says. born in Allentown, cecil grew up in mt. Airy with a divorced mother who worked for the Philadelphia railroad. His aunt, an Episcopalian, introduced cecil and his brother to the school.

in those days, cecil says, church farm school was 100% residential, and summer break only lasted six weeks, as the students were needed in the summer to operate the farm, caring for the Guernsey cows, chickens and pigs. “We didn’t know we were learning how to work!” he laughs. in addition to a strong work ethic, cecil credits church farm school with many characteristics that are also especially important for those who serve in the u.s. military.

“besides a great education, cfs gives you the confidence to go out there and do anything you

want to do. to apply yourself to it and know you can get it done, no matter your station in life,” cecil says. “they also provide an atmosphere where young people learn responsibility and respect. these basic skills have remained core values as cfs has evolved in many other educational areas. they continue to develop great citizens,” he says. Adds Peggy, “these boys aren’t any different than other boys, but they came to a school that has taught them not only respect for themselves, but respect for others. i’m constantly amazed and overwhelmed at how much they grow when they are here.”

currently the sponsor of two students whose parents serve—Emmit Jefferies ’16 and Shane Carter ’17—the Hengevelds clearly hold the church farm school mission dear to their hearts. “it means a lot to me that they are willing to take a chance on those who can’t afford a school like cfs,” cecil says. “it’s a great tradition to keep going for those who need assistance, and children and grandchildren of veterans or those actively serving should have the opportunity to excel like any other child.”

When you look at aondofa anyam ’14, it is clear that he is an athlete. But you might be surprised how incredible an athlete he is for his size. anyam, an orphan, came to Church Farm school from Nigeria with his brother, Doolun ’12. at Church Farm school, he was a District 1 aa Champion in the high jump (2012), achieved all state for the high jump three times and broke the school’s long-standing high jump record with a jump of 6 feet, 7 inches in spring 2014. he is also a District 1 aa Champion in the triple jump, a Bicentennial athletic League (BaL) field MvP and is CFs Basketball’s all-time leading scorer with 1,145 points.

In June, the school was thrilled to learn that anyam had been offered a full athletic scholarship to saint Peter’s university, a Jesuit institution in Jersey City, NJ. as he prepared for his departure from Church Farm school (he spent the summer working for sodexo, the school’s dining service), he gave us some final thoughts.

First impressions of CFS? My first impression of CFs was that it was a well-organized school that had its own small, but diverse, community that was connected not only to the neighboring communities, but to the world.

CFs did a great job in making me more independent, which to me is the biggest factor when it comes to doing more than surviving after high school. Future plans? Currently I am undecided, but I am leaning toward business management or economics. With that experience, I will try to make an impact in the sports world or even any business in general.

Class of 2014 College enrollment decisions

on June 7, 2014, all 34 church farm school seniors celebrated commencement in the school’s chapel of the Atonement. there was much to celebrate. for the second straight year, the entire class will be matriculating into four-year colleges or universities, many of them aided by academic and athletic scholarships. since 1983, more than 94% of cfs graduates have matriculated to four-year colleges, compared to the national average of 65.9% in 2013 (*U.S. dept. of Labor, bureau of Labor statistics).

valedictorian marcus Pereira—a cfs “six-year soldier” who held the highest academic average in his class and is currently attending Princeton on a full academic scholarship—delivered a stirring address to the cfs community. in addition to special academic and athletic awards and a performance by the choir, the Rev. John daniels, chaplain, and the Rev. Edmund K. sherrill ii, Head of school, sent each graduate out into the world beyond cfs with the traditional blessing of the class. congrats, graduates, and Godspeed!

inTeresT in The educaTional mission of cfs continued to build momentum during the year. We are extremely grateful to all of our friends who engaged with us through your thoughtful and generous financial contributions. Each of you made an investment that will bear much fruit in the lives of deserving boys.

increased levels of financial support came from many sources:

• Gifts to the CFS Annual Fund rose 60% from the previous year thanks to hundreds of cfs friends.

• Alumni donations grew by 40%.

• The CFS Board of Directors demonstrated leadership through a 50% overall increase in giving.

• The number of Griffin Scholar gifts from individuals ($6,000) rose from 11 to 30.

• We received generous grants from several foundations.

• Contributions from businesses through the Pennsylvania education tax credit programs increased by 45%.

With thanks to co-chairs John and minnie Kirwin and Gary and Ruthanne schlarbaum, the school’s first gala, New York in the 30s, was a huge success that built and strengthened relationships in our community. Watch for news concerning next year’s event planned for May 1, 2015; you won’t want to miss it.

We are fortunate, as a school and community, that dedicated men and women over the years believed that cfs was a worthy cause to support, and that their gifts would have a life-changing impact on the future of its students. over time, thoughtful charitable giving has helped to develop cfs into the innovative school we know today that offers a bright hope and future to these deserving boys. We are honored that you are part of this community, and look forward to working together.

fiscal 2014 Was anoTher year of financial progress for church farm school. Academic and residential programs were enhanced, while careful administration kept operating costs under control. At the same time, support from alumni, our board and the community at large increased dramatically, and our endowment continued to produce enviable returns. As a result, we are able to continue our 96-year tradition of providing an affordable college preparatory education to all boys of ability and promise. two-thirds of our students paid less than $7,000 this year for tuition, room and board. We are proud to embrace the founder’s vision and provide this unique opportunity in a boarding school environment.

current year tuition and fees covered only about 16% of operating costs, while gifts, bequests and other income added another 12%. the remaining 72% of our costs were met from the draw on our endowment. We are most fortunate to have this resource, and careful stewardship has consistently delivered solid returns despite difficult times. However, we are drawing more from our endowment to support current operations than is generally considered prudent.

As we look forward, our focus must be on increasing unrestricted support from all our

constituencies, and attracting new ones, to enable us to advance our academic programs and maintain our historic campus. substantial additions to the endowment will also be necessary as we sustain this worthy mission and build for the future.

Did you know that when you join Church Farm School, whether as student or faculty, you are assigned to one of two societies: maroon or grey? These “colors” test their mettle each spring during Field Day. In 2014, alums proved their giving prowess against the opposing society through the first annual Maroon vs. Grey Challenge.

This healthy bout of competition ended on June 30, 2014, along with CFS’ fiscal year, and we are pleased to announce Maroon as the victor by just two gifts! Stay tuned for the announcement of the next challenge, and don’t forget to look Back, Come Back, Give Back!

Since January 2013, Church Farm School has been powering 90% of the campus’ annual electricity needs (at less than market rates) through its solar array. The 1.1 megawatt installation on five acres of school land ushers in a new era of harvesting nature’s abundance and returns CFS to a leadership role in offering environmentally responsible and sustainable programs. This heritage of connection to the land remains a strategic imperative and one of the five major goals adopted by the CFS Board of Directors in its most recent strategic plan.

Neil Fanelli, CFS Director of Finance and Operations and leader of the solar project, explained that power generated from the array will reduce reliance on more costly electricity so that more dollars can be redirected to the school’s mission. “Savings from using clean solar energy over the 20 year life of the system are expected to be many hundreds of thousands of dollars, while achieving significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.” To date,

July 2014 (one of the sunniest months of the summer) has produced the most solar power in the history of the program.

Church Farm school Gala New York in the 1930s

Church Farm School’s first annual Gala, “New York in the 1930s,” held May 9, 2014, at The High Point at St. Peter’s Church in the Great Valley, featured an exhibition and sale of works by celebrated area painter George H. Rothacker. In addition to a reception and dinner, the evening included songs of the era performed by our wonderful choir, and a silent auction of artistic interpretations of the period by CFS students. chrisTopher Washburn crediTs his parents for instilling in him a “culture of giving back to the community.” As a child growing up in Kansas city, missouri, that generous spirit took the form of community and church service. “I was a boy scout with 36 merit badges,” he recalls. today, Washburn has an even more distinguished list of volunteerism to his name—including nearly 30 years with both the Philadelphia Zoo and church farm school. Washburn’s commitment to cfs is so unwavering that he recently included the school in his estate plans.

designating a portion of his iRA to church farm school upon his passing allows Washburn to continue his legacy of giving to cfs in a fashion appropriately savvy for someone who worked for a major accounting firm for 33 years. “it is a very tax-efficient way to provide donations,” Washburn says. “there are a lot of alternatives now that actually reduce taxes for you and your heirs and give you an opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful and important way.”

With a degree in economics, an mbA in accounting from the Wharton school and three and a half years of service as a u.s. naval officer under his belt, Washburn joined the u.s. audit, tax and advisory services firm KPmG in 1968. There, he specialized in mergers and acquisitions and tax services for public and private corporations, cooperatives and partnerships, as well as real estate and financial planning. He is also the former president of the Philadelphia Estate Planning council.

in addition to a very busy professional and personal life (he has two children with his wife, Pat), Washburn remained committed to taking on even more community service responsibilities. Just before becoming chairman and now a Life Emeritus director at the Philadelphia Zoo, Washburn met bob Wolcott and Jim buck, former cfs board members who enticed him to lend his expertise to the cfs board, too. After joining in 1986, he replaced Buck as Treasurer and chair of the finance committee and served on the board for 22 years before becoming an Honorary board member.

Washburn was integral in some of the school’s major strategic initiatives: first, the sale of farm-land under a “conservation by design” plan, which “preserves some of the best land and allows well designed development of the remaining land.” this sale provided a major addition to the school’s strong endowment. conservancy is clearly an area of interest for Washburn, who currently serves on the board of natural Lands trust and chairs the north coventry township open space Review board.

He was also involved in the technology initiative, when cfs became one of the first schools in the area to adopt the “laptop for every student” concept. “i’d always wanted to do something with cfs and my other organizations, all of whom have talented staffs that i can work with to accomplish things,” Washburn said. He found that at cfs. “the mission of providing a college prep education in a school culture that promotes values and ethics and really prepares boys for a successful life really inspires me,” Washburn says. “seeing the boys rise to such levels of leadership and good values and go on to great schools … it’s been such a fantastic opportunity.”
