Repair background Due to the specific material and geometricalcharacteristics of the valve plate, the re-mold-ing process requires special tooling and exper-tise to ensure a successful repair.

The MTU Maintenance Canada CFM56-2/-3/-5valve plate overhaul process (in accordancewith Allied Signal CMM 75-31-51 and CMM75-31-61) is a cost effective alternative topurchasing new parts.

Damaged seals and coatings as well as wornbearings are a result of normal wear and tear.The overhaul process addresses three differenttypes of repairs:• Replacement of the dry film lubricant

coating on the valve plate assembly hinge• Replacement of the damaged sleeve

bearings in the valve plate• Re-molding of the valve plate silicone seal

The repair process The damaged silicone seal of the valve plate is removed mechanically and the remainingsilicone residue is then chemically dissolvedfrom the valve’s seal groove.

The worn dry film lubricant coating is removedby way of dry plastic bead blasting. The in-spected valve plate is now ready for a new sili-cone compound to be re-molded into the valveplate groove. The groove itself has been coatedwith a chemical bonding agent to support ef-fective adhesion of the seal compound withthe valve.

Finished dimension, profile and hardness of theseal are ensured by proper injection pressure,heat treatment and final cure. MTU engineersdesigned and developed the specific toolingand procedures to accomplish this installation.Next, the valve plate is ready for the renewal ofthe dry film lubricant coating, which is sprayedon in a multi-layered application process andthen baked for a lasting finish. Finally, thesleeve bearings are replaced, resulting in a fullyrestored OEM part.
