History of Rocky Mountain Tyagaraja Utsavam (RMTU):

Sadguru Sri Tyagaraja Aradhana has always been a part of the Carnatic music community in Denver, Colorado, USA and was spearheaded by the Sagar family (Dr.Yashoda Sagar, daughter of famous musician of yesteryears Vidwan Vinjamuri Sri Varadaraja Iyengar). Long time residents of the area recall the Tyagaraja Aradhana observed at their home every year where musicians and music lovers got together for a day filled with music, music and music all around.

Several long time residents of this area, like the Vedantans, Satyans, to name a few, have all contributed immensely to the growth of Carnatic Music in the Colorado vicinity, by hosting performing artists from India and other places, and arranging their concerts for the benefit of the local rasikas.

In 2008, Denver-based musician violinist Priya Hariharan (disciple of ‘Padma Bhushan’ Sri Lalgudi G. Jayaraman), took the initiative to elevate the festival to a

day-long Aradhana organizing the Rocky Mountain Tyagaraja Utsavam - RMTU.

The schedule of the Aradhana, in accordance with tradition, always commenced with a group rendition of Chetulara (Bhairavi - Adi), Sri Ganapathini (Sowrashtram - Adi), Gurulekha (Gowri Manohari - Khanda Chapu), followed by the Pancharatna kritis. After the group renditions, individual and group performances of musicians and students would follow.

In 2010, Colorado Fine Arts Association (CFAA) was formed by dedicated classical music lovers to bring in more exposure to traditional and contemporary art forms to the rasikas of Colorado. CFAA collaborated with the original RMTU team in 2010 and from 2011 onwards, CFAA has been organizing the festival on a very grand scale, bringing in guest artistes from India to perform during the festival and also during the Summer and Fall seasons.

RMTU is as unique as the Rocky Mountainregion itself and has been asserted as such by performances by stalwarts such as Vidwans Sri Chitravina Ravikiran, Sri T.M.Krishna, Dr. Smt. Nithyashree Mahadevan and Smt. Priyadarshini Govind.

Participation in the festival has grown immensely, from 65 performers in 2008 to around 130 performers in 2012, from a day-long festival in 2008 to a 2-day festival in 2012 and on to a 200 performers/ 2-weekend function in 2013.

We feel privileged and are extremely thankful to all the patrons, volunteers, sponsors, musicians, dance artists, students, parents and the Colorado rasika community for their immense support, encouragement and dedication to make RMTU a grand success year after year for many more years to come!
