I loved the program and would love to come back to Jordan in the future. I’ve learned an indescribable amount of Arabic, and the personal connections I’ve made with both Jordanians and the American students on the program will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thank you, CET, for everything.

— Elliot Farris, University of Denver, Jordan Fall 2013

INTENSIVE ARABIC LANGUAGE

Improve your Arabic by leaps and bounds. Take a full load of Arabic language classes, including two content-based electives that allow you to focus your Arabic language learning on topics that interest you—the history, politics, religion, literature and culture of the Arab World. This is a flexible program that adapts to individual interests and learning styles. Open to students with at least two semesters of Arabic.

MIDDLE EAST STUDIES & INTERNSHIP

Balance language learning with the practical experience of an internship. There is no language prerequisite and internships are in Arabic and English.

SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITYCET Academic Director Manal Yosef has over a decade of experience in the Arabic language teaching field. She joins forces with resident staff, faculty, language partners and roommates to create a network of unwavering support for students. Students rave about this community and enjoy the inroads to Jordanian society it affords—local friends, invitations to family celebrations, trips to a roommate’s hometown.

EXPLORING THE REGIONStudents might visit Wadi Rum, a spectacular valley formed by massive red cliffs, and take a sunset jeep tour through the dunes. They might head to the Dead Sea for a salt water dip. Or they might tour Ajloun Castle, built during the Crusades, and climb to the top to enjoy gorgeous views of the Jordanian countryside.

LEARNING ARABIC IN JORDANCET Jordan students make significant gains in Arabic language. Intensive courses in Modern Standard Arabic and dialect take them not only outside the classroom, but even outside Amman—they visit Jerash to create a tourism video in Arabic, head to Roman castle ruins to practice describing historical structures, or have lunch with teachers to learn how to order from a restaurant.

ACTIVITIES: THE LIGHTER SIDEThere are countless ways to unwind after class or work: movie nights, shopping at the old city souq (market), pick-up soccer games, ceramics classes, visits to the National Gallery of Fine Arts, debke dance performances, and a student favorite: cooking class, conducted in dialect, where each student cooks part of a large group feast.

Some nights when we both need a break from our studies, we look up funny videos on YouTube or get into long discussions about life and boys and goals and faith. Even though we are from very different cultures, it’s become so natural for us to exist together…Coming here I expected to be friends with my roommate, but I did not plan for just how close we would get.

— Kate Maffey, Princeton University, Jordan Spring 2014

CET students share apartments with local roommates—University of Jordan students selected by CET to participate in the program. It doesn’t take long for students and roommates

to bond. They chat about soap operas over a plate of mansaf (roasted lamb over rice), go head-to-head in backgammon, or rally a group for an impromptu barbeque.

JUMP AHEAD ONE YEAR OF ARABIC. BOAST ABOUT OPI SCORES ON YOUR RÉSUMÉ.Students in both programs cover at least one year of university-level Arabic in a semester. To get these gains on the record, they take an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI). On average, CET Arabic Language students advance a jaw-dropping three OPI sub-levels each term. And these official OPI scores add both credibility and shine to a grad school application or résumé.
