CESL WEEKLY NEWSLETTER !5

Every week we interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!

Name: Herman Hometown: Hermosillo, Mexico Level: 5

How long have you been at CESL? Four months

Why would you like to learn English? So that I can study at the university.

Have you made many international friends here? It can be hard because most of the students are speaking Arabic or Chinese, and I haven’t met anyone from Mexico. But I’ve made friends from China and Iran.

Are you going to keep up with the friends you made here after you leave CESL? Yeah, I will.

Have you gone on any CESL activities? Not yet but I would like to.

What do you plan on doing once you finish at CESL?

I plan to study at Pima, then transfer to the University of Arizona to study finance.

What is your dream job?

I would like to work on Wall Street. I recently visited New York City and loved the city and all the buildings.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I love to workout, play basketball, and hangout with my friends.

What is your favorite book you have ever read?

El Esclavo, (The Slave) by Francisco J. Angel. It’s about a man who wakes up in the hospital after an automobile accident.

If you could meet anybody in the world who would it be?

Blake Griffith, an NBA player for the L.A. Clippers.

Do you have any advice to share with other CESL students?

If you have the opportunity, try to practice English before you come here. Interviewed by Tanner Jean-Louis

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT! Name: Yasmin Kullab Hometown: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Level: 6

Hi Yasmin, what would you like to talk about today? Let’s talk about friendship.

Who are your friends?

I have a group of friends in Saudi. My best friend is Cyrine. She’s studying in Jordan right now. I miss her so much. We’ve been friends since kindergarten.

Why do you think you’re still friends with her after all of this time?

We have many things in common. She knows if I’m sad and I know when she’s sad. We love the same food and we have the same hair! It’s hard to explain, I just love her.

What was the most fun day you’ve had with her?

When I spent a summer in Jordan with her, there was one day where we stayed out on the streets until 3 AM! We were just talking, running around, taking pictures and videos, and trying new things.

What sort of new things?

For both of our first times, we ate sushi. We hated it. But now, we love sushi.

Sushi’s so delicious. So, what are some things that you’ve learned from her?

She has taught me how to put on makeup. Also, she loves studying and she’s so focused. I’ve learned from her how to not procrastinate on homework because I’m not as focused as she is.

I hear ya. Why do you think that it’s important to have friends?

You need someone to talk to—to have secrets with. I can’t tell everything to my sister or my mom. Also, you need someone to be crazy with and do something together.

Friends are definitely essential. Any messages for CESL?

I want to say that I’m very thankful for the teachers. Thanks for your hard work!
