Mission Statement

The mission of the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at the University of Arizona is threefold: 1. To provide superior English language instruction to native speakers of other languages through quality teaching and a curriculum that provides a rich and engaging learning environment to prepare students for academic and professional success at the University of Arizona as well as for other academic, professional, and social settings.

2. To serve the linguistic and professional development needs of the University of Arizona and the greater global community by reaching out to professional global and local communities, supporting research in language learning, networking with language teaching professionals, and mentoring teachers.

3. To encourage respect for cultural and linguistic diversity through intercultural competence, professionalism, and collaboration both on and off campus in an effort to promote cultural understanding. In student surveys, CESL students consistently rate CESL teachers and classes as the major reason they like their CESL experience and progress so quickly in learning English. We offer the best quality classes by the most experienced teachers. Four other good reasons to choose CESL include CESL's award-winning faculty average 20 years' experience teaching ESL, both in the U.S. and abroad. CESL, established in 1968, has one of the strongest intensive English language faculties in the US. CESL is nationally CEA-accredited. All faculty members meet a minimum requirement of a master's degree in ESL. Key faculty members possess doctorates. CESL faculty and staff have published more than 15 ESL textbooks.

CESL students can visit regularly scheduled University classes. CESL students can listen to university lectures to improve academic English skills. CESL offers a Bridge Class where CESL students attend one university class for a semester and

experience academic classroom expectations. Many CESL students apply for and attend the University of Arizona when they achieve the necessary

The CESL building is located in the heart of the University of Arizona campus. CESL students are immersed in the academic culture of a major state university. The University operates its own student health center, and major medical coverage is provided by CESL. The University of Arizona is a Research One University, with many nationally ranked departments. In addition to our own state-of-the-art computer labs, CESL students have access to all UA facilities,

including the new Integrated Learning Center, campus computer labs, the University library system, different university museums, and university sports programs.




CURRICULUM

The CESL curriculum is flexible and challenging, productive, and responsive to student needs, and produces positive results. Flexible and Challenging: A student learns and progresses fastest when placed in classes at their proficiency level. CESL students study in four core classes of 22.5 hours per week of required classes.

Speaking/Reading/Listening (80 minutes daily), Writing/Reading/Listening (80 minutes daily), Grammar and Reading & Vocabulary (200 minutes per week each)

Depending on enrollment, we offer from 5-7 levels of English instruction. Students may study at different levels for different skills.

Productive: Students learn language both inside and outside the classroom. CESL students spend 22.5 hours per week in class and should expect considerable homework.

Students at the advanced level have the opportunity to visit regularly scheduled university classes, too.

Outside of class, students participate in weekly activities, clubs, and excursions where they practice English while interacting with new friends from all over the world.

Responsive to Student Needs: Each student has a unique learning style. CESL's experienced faculty members are sensitive to the personality and cultural factors that affect

learning. Our curriculum reflects the needs of our students and the expertise of our faculty; our administrative reporting system assures that students who need academic help can get it quickly.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM

Intensive English Program: CESL is proud to have the only CEA nationally-accredited Intensive English Program in Arizona. Intensive courses meet 4-5 times per week. Students in the Intensive English Program study full-time with us (22.5 hours/week). They take courses in Speaking/Reading/Listening, Writing/Reading/Listening, Reading & Vocabulary and Grammar. Students may also enroll part-time, taking some courses in our Intensive English Program. An I-20 or DS 2019 is issued for study. CESL provides superior English language instruction through a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for academic and professional success. Our English language classes serve the linguistic and professional development needs of The University of Arizona and the greater global community. CESL promotes cultural and linguistic diversity and understanding through sensitivity, professionalism, and collaboration both on and off campus.

One important feature of the CESL curriculum is its flexibility. We understand that students learn in different ways and offer a variety of instructional methodologies to meet student learning styles. ACADEMIC BRIDGE PROGRAM

The University of Arizona’s English as a Second Language Academic Bridge Programs (UA ESL ABP) is a joint program offered by the University of Arizona and its Center for English as a Second Language (CESL). The UA ESL ABP offers students an opportunity to take both ESL and UA courses to earn UA credit while at the same time improve their English ability and college readiness. Students enrolled in the ESL Bridge Programs begin with greater ESL instruction at the beginning and increase their enrollment in UA courses as their English ability and grades allow. In addition, students who meet the minimum academic qualifications for UA admission can be admitted to the UA upon successful completion of ESL Bridge Programs. www.cesl.arizona.edu/bridge-programs

TEEN ENGLISH PROGRAM

In the late1980s, CESL offered our first TEEN English Program to serve the energy and talents of teenaged language learners. We have a rich program with a varied and up-to-date curriculum, high-interest topics, a fast pace, and contact with native speakers of English. Students use their English in the classroom, in the computer labs, and during recreational activities. The teen program is a 4-week summer program offered in July-August.

Program Description

The Teen English Program provides the following: 1. Four hours per day of classroom instruction in ESL and activities, Monday through Thursday on the campus of The University of Arizona. 2. Friday excursions to recreational activities in Tucson. This provides opportunity to use informal spoken English outside the class room for at least five hours. 3. Intensive practice in English language skills at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. 4. Small classes with many opportunities to speak in English with classmates from all over the world. 5. CESL faculty who hold a minimum of a Masters Degree in ESL and extensive experience working with teen non-native English speakers. 6. EVENING PROGRAM

To help meet the needs of busy students and professionals, CESL is excited to offer evening courses. Our evening classes run for 4 hours/week, 2 nights / week. Students can take courses in areas like Speaking & Listening, Pronunciation, General English, TOEFL preparation, IELTS preparation, and Writing for Academic Purposes. TUTORING PROGRAM

CESL offers affordable individualized tutoring on campus to CESL and UA students who need a little extra help with their English. These students may brush up on their weakest English language skills in a one-on-one setting. We have three tutoring options, general tutoring, elite tutoring, and tutoring packages, as well as our free Homework Help Lab. General Tutoring: This tutoring is for students who want help with general English for their CESL courses or perhaps for entering into an undergraduate university program. Elite Tutoring: This tutoring is for students who need higher-level, more intense tutoring in specific subject areas. Typically these students already hold university or advanced degrees and need the tutoring for advanced degree programs or for professional purposes. Tutoring Packages: These tutoring packages are intensive and focus on particular skill areas. They are taught by CESL instructors. In addition to the tutoring time, students receive additional materials and training designed to help them improve in the particular subject area. The tutoring packages we offer are: TOEFL, IELTS, Grammar, Reading, Vocabulary, Writing, Speaking, Pronunciation, and Presentation Skills. If our regular course offerings do not fit your group's schedule or needs, we can design a special English course for you. CESL provides programs of English language instruction and teacher training for schools and companies and educational institutions in Tucson, southern Arizona and abroad.

Over the years, CESL has provided many successful specialized courses, both in the U.S. and abroad. A few examples:

For 13 years, CESL was a site for pre-academic orientation and training for Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows sponsored through USIA and the Institute for International Education, an 8-week English and academic preparation program. Currently CESL hosts the Fulbright Summer Pre-Academic Orientation.

For the past 23 years, CESL has hosted the Tokyo Kokusai Daigaku (Tokyo International University) Spring Study Abroad program, for 30-40 undergraduates annually. This is a five-week intensive English and American Studies program.

Since 1987, CESL has provided a "Teen English Summer Program" for students from ages 13-16, a 20-hour per week course designed to meet the needs and interests of this age group.

TEACHER TRAINING

CESL is proud to offer a range of programs to fit the needs of a diverse group of future EFL teachers. Any person interested in teaching EFL abroad can take the classroom-based 100-hour Full TEFL certificate in the summer. Depending on a potential teacher’s plans or needs, one can also take the online route, taking the 50-hour Online Basic TEFL, the 20-hour onsite practicum, followed by the 50-hour Online Advanced TEFL certificate for a total of 120 hours of TEFL certificates. 50-hour Basic TEFL: The Online Basic TEFL program is intended for individuals who plan to teach English in a short-term capacity. It has been designed to provide the essential foundations in language teaching theory, methodology and practical classroom application. 50-hour Advanced TEFL: The Online Advanced TEFL program is intended for in-service teachers with two or more years of experience or for those teachers who have completed the 50 Hour Basic and the 20 Hour Practicum and are interested in getting more advanced coursework towards 120 total TEFL hours. 100-hour Full TEFL: The Full TEFL program is an intensive, classroom-based course intended for individuals who plan to teach English professionally and in a long-term capacity. It has been designed to meet the needs of both novice and experienced teachers by combining comprehensive foundational coursework in language acquisition theory, teaching methodology and assessment with advanced instructional techniques and curricular frameworks. 20-hour Practicum: The 20-hour Practicum supplement can be added to any of our TEFL Certificate programs or simply taken alone as an independent component. ONLINE PROGRAMS

The Center for English as a Second Language is proud to present its Online Program designed to meet the needs of students who wish to pursue their educational goals online. All CESL Online courses employ a 10-hour, 30-hour/8 week, or 50-hour/8 week-format that depends on the amount of work required to complete the course. Upon completion of the courses, participants receive Certificates of Completion. We currently offer or are developing courses in:

1. General English: Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced ESL 2. Skill-Based English: Pronunciation, Academic Listening and Note-taking,

Beginning/Intermediate/Academic Writing. 3. English Grammar: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced. 4. CESL ENDORSEMENT AND UA CONDITIONAL ADMISSION

CESL English Language Endorsement is offered to currently enrolled, full-time CESL students who have completed at least one 8-week session with us. The endorsement is valid for one year from the date of issuance. You can request endorsement with the form on the Student Services webpage. The CESL Endorsement satisfies the University of Arizona English language requirement for all undergraduate and some graduate majors. Undergraduate Criteria Proficiency scores of at least 7 in all 4 skills B or better in CESL advanced level classes a TOEFL or IELTS score within the last 6 months letters of support from CESL instructors active participation in CESL activities

Graduate Criteria Proficiency score of 8 in all 4 skill areas B or better in the highest CESL levels a TOEFL or IELTS score within the last 6 months letters of support from CESL instructors active participation in CESL activities

STUDENT SERVICES: APPLICATION, IMMUNIZATIONS

Application We have applications for Full-Time Study, for Part-Time Study and for Tutoring available on our website at www.cesl.arizona.edu/apply-now Immunizations Please be advised that all CESL and University of Arizona students born after December 31, 1956 must be immunized against measles, mumps and rubella. Measles, mumps and rubella can be serious, life threatening illnesses. Arizona state law requires immunization for ALL students as a public health measure to protect students and the community alike. You must have TWO MMR immunizations to attend the University of Arizona. One of the MMRs must be after December 31, 1979. Go to your physician or health care service to obtain proof of immunization. This proof may be a copy of your immunization record, or you may have the attached immunization record form signed by your doctor verifying the dates of your immunization. You must bring proof of immunization to CESL. There are three ways to prove immunization:

1. The Immunization Record Form signed by your physician 2. A copy of your immunization record showing vaccination since 1980, or, if you are not able to

provide a record, 3. You will be vaccinated upon arrival at CESL at the Campus Health Center. You will have to get

your second measles immunization after one month.

Immigration, Visas At CESL, we do everything we can to help make your transition to life in the United States an easy one. We help you apply for your Student Visa. To apply for your Visa, follow these steps:

• Submit your CESL application and financial documents. We will send you an I-20 for full-time study programs. Apply several months before you want to study.

• Pay the SEVIS $200.00 fee and get your receipt. http://fmjfee.com. CESL can even do this for you if you authorize it on your application.

FACILITIES, ACTIVITIES, AWARDS

Facilities CESL is housed in a dedicated building. Our offices and many of our classes meet in this building. CESL has a comfortable Student Lounge available, including couches, tables and chairs, computers, a TV, a microwave and a piano. This is a great place to relax between classes and connect with your friends! CESL has a comprehensive Library with books and videos for all levels of English. In addition to regular software programs, the computers have a wide variety of programs designed especially to help students learn English. For more information please see www.cesl.arizona.edu/language-study Student Activities, Clubs and Excursions We offer several fun ways students can improve their English while learning something new! Every month, CESL students have several planned Student Activities they can participate in. These include things like visits to local attractions and group trips to nearby locations and sporting and cultural events. Every session, CESL offers different Student Clubs, such as knitting club and movie club. CESL also has the Individualized Reading Program. In this program, students read as many English books as they can at their level or above. At the end of a session, students can earn bronze, silver or gold pins, depending on how many books they read. Student Awards CESL students can earn a Director’s Award for participating in community activities and making a contribution to the CESL and Tucson communities. Students can also earn a Global Citizen’s Award for participating in multicultural events in the community. In addition, each session one student who has demonstrated great academic ability and who will be entering the University of Arizona earns the Neff Award, which honors their accomplishment and provides some financial assistance.

SPONSORED STUDENTS

Sponsored Students have a scholarship or funding from their home country or the U.S. government (Fulbright, LASPAU, etc.) that pays for their tuition, fees, and living expenses. Sponsored students must consult their sponsoring advisor (often at the home country embassy or educational agency in Washington D.C.) on many issues while studying in the U.S. In most cases, CESL will act as the liaison between the student and his/her sponsoring agency. Here are some ways in which CESL works with sponsoring agencies: Financial – Sponsoring agencies provide a financial guarantee with your application to confirm that they will pay for a student’s tuition, fees, and living expenses. In general, most sponsoring agencies will only pay for tuition and fees for the full-time Intensive English Program. Grades, Attendance and Attitude – At the end of every session CESL sends reports to sponsoring agencies. These reports detail students’ academic progress, attendance, and overall attitude towards learning English. Health Insurance – Sponsoring agencies often provide health insurance coverage for students, however regardless of whether your sponsor provides health insurance; CESL enrolls all students in University of Arizona Campus Health coverage and bills the sponsor. Every session, CESL’s student advisor will:

- Submit mid-session warning letters regarding grades, attendance and behavior - Submit final progress reports at the end of the session - Facilitate communication between the student and the sponsor when necessary

It is the student’s responsibility to maintain the requirements of the sponsoring scholarship.
