CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is the original teacher training course for English language teachers and is based on the International House Certificate which was initially run in London in 1962.

The University of Cambridge CELTA course is highly respected and recognised all over the world. Teaching English to speakers of other languages can be a highly rewarding career, offering you the chance to live and work abroad. You will need an internationally recognised teaching qualification and CELTA gives you the skills you need and will make it easier to get a teaching job anywhere. The CELTA is the most widely taken initial TESOL/TEFL qualification of its kind in the world.

WHAT IS THE CELTA?

WHY TAKE THE CELTA AT IH CAPE TOWN?

Courses have a minimum of 120 contact hours over four weeks, including:

• input sessions• supervised lesson planning• six hours’ assessed teaching practice per candidate supervised by a course tutor• feedback on teaching practice• peer observation of teaching practice• six hours’ observation of experienced teachers (live and DVD)• consultation time with tutors.

You will also need to dedicate an additional 80 hours for the required reading, research, pre- and post-session tasks, assignments and lesson preparation.

This course is very intensive and requires a full-time commitment. It is not possible or advisable to hold even a part-time job while on the course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

COURSE CONTENT

The syllabus consists of the following areas:

• learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context• language analysis and awareness• language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing• planning and resources for different teaching contexts• developing teaching skills and professionalism• teaching practice in a classroom environment• classroom observation of experienced teachers.

Candidates are assessed on a continuous basis with assessment being divided into two components.

• The teaching practice component is internally assessed by the course tutors andexternally and moderated by an external assessor who is approved by CambridgeEnglish Language Assessment.By the end of the six hours of teaching practice, candidates should have demonstratedsuccessful achievement of a wide range of criteria.

• The written component of the course is assessed by four written assignments. They areinternally assessed and externally moderated by the Cambridge Assessor.

ASSESSMENT

ENROLMENT REQUIREMENTSIn order to take the CELTA, you need to:

• be at least 18 years old at the start of the course• have a standard of education that would allow entrance to higher education in your

country• have an awareness of grammatical, lexical and discourse language systems• have a competence in English, both written and spoken, that will enable you to follow the

course• have the potential to develop into an effective teacher.
