Supporting Kroc Centers Through Leadership Development

BackgroundRay & Joan Kroc Corps Community Centers present

distinctive ministry opportunities to develop new models of organization and operation which require qualified and trained leaders.

Responding to this need—with significant input from the National Kroc Center Task Force—the Central Territory commenced work on a capacity building approach for Kroc Leadership Development, beginning with Officers and envisioned to include key management staff.

The task force recommended and prioritized specific training content areas around which a core curriculum would be developed.

Booth University College

The Army’s Booth University College in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada developed a similar certificate program with distinct Salvation Army requirements through the School for Continuing Studies.

Booth University College, through its School for Continuing Studies is well suited for consideration to serve as the designated certifying academic institution for this initiative.

Curriculum Advisory Panel

The National Kroc Task Force & invited guests served as a Curriculum Advisory Panel assisting Booth University College in developing initial curriculum components and in identifying the qualified instructors for each Course

Certificate in Kroc Center Leadership Program The certificate will be offered in a cohort structure, with 20 students in

each cohort (25 Maximum; 10 Minimum)

Potential participants indentified by each territory

The program will be available to participants from across the country, identified and approved through appropriate divisional and territorial channels

• Demonstrate skills distinctive to large Kroc Center settings in team-building, staff supervision/development, complex business/finance operations, fundraising complexities, facilities/equipment management, customer service, HR laws, personnel policies and procedures, and risk management policies and procedures

Learning Objectives

• Communicate the underlying philosophy of effective human resource (HR) management principles and processes in order to provide appropriate oversight to HR personnel.

• Describe the purpose and value of a comprehensive organizational chart in order to maintain a high functioning center.

• Analyze positions and budget implications within the framework of the Kroc Center’s distinctive relationship to DHQ and THQ in order to create and execute staffing plans that adapt to changing circumstances.

• Implement effective HR practices relating to creating position descriptions, posting open positions, and interviewing candidates in order to maintain an appropriately efficient and legal hiring process.

• Implement effective HR practices relating to onboarding and training practices for new staff in order to prepare them for success, maintain stability in times of transition, and foster team cohesion.

• Implement effective HR practices relating to staff development, performance evaluation and goal setting, discipline, termination and exit interviews in order to improve the effectiveness of all personnel and programs.

MGT 284 Financial Management for KROC CentersMay 7-July 27, 2018 (3 Credit Hours)

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the breadth of all Kroc Center programs in order to communicate to stakeholders the overarching purpose and value of a Kroc Center in the community.

• Understand the role and purpose of Kroc Operating Standards and key performance indicators, risk management principles, and facility management priorities in order to provide appropriate oversight to program and operations personnel.

• Evaluate present programs in relation to operating standards, outcome objectives, membership data, budget review and community needs assessments in order to create appropriate corresponding plans in changing circumstances.

• Utilize business principles appropriate to a distinctive Kroc organizational model using membership software in order to effectively market programs for membership growth and promote good customer service practices.

• Appreciate the value of program and key performance indicator data collection relating to membership utilization and program outcomes in order to assure quality improvements and to assist in the preparation of stakeholder reports and funding proposals.

MGT 285 Capstone CourseDeveloper/Lead Instructor: Lieut. Col (Dr) Susan L van Duinen

Integration & Application August 1-September 1, 2018 (1 Credit Hour)

The capstone course is designed to facilitate the integration and demonstrated application of Salvation Army KROC Center policies and procedures to the general principles provided in the other courses in the certificate program. The Capstone Course concludes with a final assignment (Portfolio) relevant to the student’s respective KROC Center context.

The Capstone Course includes a Practicum experience at a Kroc Center.

Learning Objectives

• Synthesize the primary learning from the certificate courses into the roles and positions of Kroc Center administrative responsibilities in order to competently lead in Kroc Center management arenas.

• Access and utilize the organization’s territorial and divisional systems of support and sources of information in order to effectively move the mission forward in the context of a Kroc Center.

• Express the integral connections between spiritual life and mission, and the business management functions, in order to more effectively pursue mission goals described by Kroc Center programs.

Practicum ExperienceOn-Site At A Kroc Center

Time Spent with each center department, shadowing department head and/or supervisor

Students will be develop an assessment of assets/opportunities and deficits/challenges, and identify one specific goal, that if addressed, would result in forward movement of the Kroc Center as it relates to mission impact.

Mentor/Advisors

Students will be asked to select a qualified mentor/academic advisor whose responsibility will be to provide additional support, guidance and assistance with all aspects of the certificate program and particularly the capstone project and practicum experience
