PREPARING FOR GRADUATION WEEK

Attire

Awards Presentation and Celebration: This event is an opportunity to celebrate your achievements in a more casual setting. Academic regalia is not required. We encourage graduates and guests to wear clothing or other items that celebrate their heritage and identity.

Convocation and Commencement: All graduates who process in these ceremonies are required to wear full academic regalia (cap, gown, and hood) pertaining to the degree they will be receiving.

We recommend weather appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes. Your regalia has no pockets and graduates are not allowed to carry bags during the ceremonies. If necessary, you may wear a small cross body purse under your robes. Please be aware that the dye used in the graduation robes may “bleed” onto your clothing if wet; we recommend dark colors under your robes.

13HARVARD CHAN

Students will be given a name card, which must be kept throughout the ceremony and handed in at the stage for reading and onscreen display of the graduate’s name, degree and department. Please do not lose this card.

At 10:00am a mandatory information session for graduates will begin. All graduates must be in the Kresge Courtyard tent at this time. Following the information session, please remain in your seat until the time comes to begin the procession.

Make sure your tassel is on the RIGHT side of your mortarboard (your right).

At 10:20am the procession will begin. As you process out of the tent, please remain in single file and follow the person in front of you to maintain proper alphabetical order.

After processing from the Kresge Courtyard into the HMS tent, you will be greeted by ushers who will direct you to your seat. Please remain standing until Dean Williams signals everyone to sit at the end of the processional.

When your time comes to cross the stage, an usher will let you know when you should proceed to the front of the tent. When the people in your row rise to go to the stage, rise with them and follow the usher’s directions.

Doctoral students: As you approach the stage you will be greeted by program staff who will scan your name card and prepare you to receive the hood and scroll. Remove your tam and place your hood on your left arm. When directed please begin to walk; you may not hear your name until you are en route. When you reach Assistant Registrar Michelle Pessinis, she will take your hood, arrange it and pass it to your program or department chair. Stand in front of the chair facing the audience to have your hood placed over your head. Your degree and department will be displayed on screen at this time. Proceed across the stage to receive your scroll from Dean Williams, smile and pause for your photo, then return to your original seat.

Masters students: As you approach the stage you will be greeted by program staff who will scan your name card. When directed please begin to walk; you may not hear your name until you are en route. Proceed across the stage to receive your scroll from Dean Williams, smile and pause for your photo, then return to your original seat.

At the end of the ceremony, the Dean and faculty will recess back to the Kresge Courtyard. Remain in your seat while they march out of the tent and then you are welcome to join your guests and the reception.

Religious Accommodations

We recognize that graduation week overlaps with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and many of our students and guests may be fasting. We have arranged to provide portable hors d’oeuvres packages for our Muslim graduates and guests to take home and enjoy post-sundown. For more information about this or to request a package for you or your guests, please contact [email protected].

We also offer a Wudu Room for ritual washing and a Reflection Room for prayer and meditation in the Kresge building. Ushers will be available to direct guests to these rooms.

Photography

For your benefit, arrangements have been made with Commencement Photo, Inc. for a professional photographer to record your moment on the stage. The full color proofs of these photos will be mailed without obligation to you approximately one week after Convocation. This service will enable all participants to have a photograph of their graduation. Information regarding this service was mailed directly to you. If you did not receive this mailing, please contact Commencement Photo, Inc. at (978) 851-5924 or [email protected].

For safety reasons, no photos or videos may be taken from the aisles or common areas. Guests are asked to remain in their seats, enjoy the ceremonies, and not stand on their chairs. Harvard Security will enforce this rule.

CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES!

Page 27: CEREMONY GUIDE - Harvard University

Core Values, Concepts, and Principles of the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health

• Health is a fundamental right of every human being.

• Public health has the responsibility to improve and protect the health of all populations, especially the most vulnerable of these—children, the elderly, the poor, and the underserved.

• Public health must emphasize prevention and embrace collective, multifaceted action to respond to emerging challenges to health practitioners and researchers; it must investigate disease determinants and risks, improve health care quality and delivery, and influence policy.

• Institutions of public health should provide information that promotes health in populations and empowers individuals to make sound health decisions.

• The educational and research agenda of a public health institution must transcend local and national boundaries—health is a global concern.

• A public health institution should support the ideal of service in all its aspects—research, teaching, community involvement, and communication.

• All members of a public health institution should respect the highest principles of scientific and academic conduct, foster open inquiry, and honor individual rights.
