It provides a stepped escape route from the newly refurbished Ceramics Gallery across an external space to the adjacent Secretariat block. This functional requirement has been beautifully resolved with a dramatic and elegantly detailed structural form. A simple folded, perforated stair plate is supported between angled portal frames arranged at regular centres. Shelter is provided overhead by an integrated glazed canopy and the whole composition is celebrated at night by an illuminated wall which will be visible from Cromwell Road outside the Museum. Having received unconditional planning approval, unexpected for such a sensitive site, the bridge was completed in October 2009, in time for the opening of the refurbished Ceramics Galleries.
