Independent Project Ideas

• You can use any handbuilding technique or combination of them.

• You can do wheel thrown work. (throwing- using a mechanical device, potter’s wheel, that turns/spins in order to form clay.)

• Or you can do a combination of wheel thrown and handbuilt.

Handbuilding Techniques• Coil- using snakelike ropes of clay; generally for making round forms• Slab- a flat piece of clay created by rolling a roller over the clay, or

pressing with hands; generally for making geometric forms with sharp edges

• Pinch- using the thumb and fingers to press a ball of clay into a hollow form

• Modeling- using your hands to manipulate clay into a form• Press Molding (drape or sling mold)- to lay a slab of clay over or into

an object to create its form (such as a bowl or balloon)• Extruded- clay that is forced through a die (die = particular shape)• Paddle- shaping a solid piece and then hollowing it out.• Slip-casting- pouring slip (liquid clay) into a mold to take the mold’s

form.
