Dear Readers,

Greetings for the Vaisakhi!!!Vaisakhi, also known as Baisakhi is a historical and

harvest festival in Sikhism and Hinduism. This harvest celebration takes place annually and harvesters celebrate and rejoice about the New Year and the harvested crops. Vaisakhi has special significance for Sikhs as on this day in 1699, their tenth Guru Gobind Singh Ji organized the order of the Khalsa. It is regionally known by many names, like Bihu in Assam, Pongal in Tamil Nadu and New Year in other parts of the country.

The country is shocked to see the leakage of CBSE paper. The Education system supposed to promote responsibility and help develop a responsible Society. The leakage of CBSE Examination Papers from the CBSE Examination conducting offices was unthinkable earlier. Today, it sees the Governance of Education System has been too irresponsible not to develop adequate checks and control systems to ensure a leak proof examination. In the past the central board was considered more respectable and free from leakage. Now, CBSE has lost that respect. But this is happening at a time, when all the opposition parties are ganging against the ruling party and the PM Modi. They are busy trying to use every opportunity including CBSE exam paper leakage or the alleged “dilution” of SC/STs (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 to create noise even at the cost of the nation for defaming BJP and PM Modi. They have called for Bharat bandh on Dalit Issue, even if, it is the act of Supreme court not the Govt. of India. It is an irresponsible act of the opposition parties, but it is said that “everything is fair in love and war “. The political war is on. Like 2014, the unprecedented political history created by BJP & Narendra Modi, 2019 is expected to be an unprecedented political fight, where all political parties are trying to unite against BJP and PM Modi, to block him from winning again.

Though, there are too many cracks in opposition groups, starting with Bengal CM, Mamta Banarjee not accepting Rahul Gandhi the party President and meeting Sonia Gandhi. Congress is the oldest political party which ruled India for most part of independent India stands isolated today, making opposition groups confused with too many tall leaders aspiring to be PM, but not a single one is tall

enough to be accepted by all other leaders as the PM. This is the biggest problem of the opposition groups; the killing of unprecedented number of terrorists in Kashmir valley has unnerved Pakistan who never saw such failures of its Anti India Strategy, the surgical strikes or the gunning down of terrorists by Indian Army. Pakistan is shamelessly expressing its desire to support the anti Modi, Anti BJP Forces in India. The Congress weakness for Pakistan is well known. The Shameless utterances of a veteran Congress leader, Mani Shankar Aiyar in Pakistan may be remembered, when he invited the support from Pakistan to help Modi be out of power in Delhi.

Modi magic is obviously bothering all enemies of India, be it the Pakistan or political parties, who care for themselves more than the country.

These developments make 2019 Elections historic, and the preparations have already started almost by all the political Parties.

Let’s pray God, this Election Gives a Result, which is good for India and help India emerge as a superpower in the highly competitive international political scenario, which is going through a process of regrouping in front of a possible third world war. Indian voters have a huge responsibility to vote responsibly.

Dr. MaDhuKar Gupta, IASadditional Secretary, department of Public Enterprises, Government of india

Q You have been managing CSR policies in its maturity phase after its launch phase (2010-13) during which

the first two guidelines was released. What has been your experience in terms of response of PSU’s in complying with the guidelines from heart?

A As you know, the companies act came into force from 1st April 2014. Now, once anything is mandated by

law, we don’t have a choice, PSU’S had to follow the law. But the good thing was that even before the law came into force regarding CSR; many PSU’s were undertaking CSR because basically what is the difference between the public

sector and private sector is that public sector exists for the greater good of the society. The bottom line as far as the functioning of the public sector is concerned is to make reasonable profits & at the same time look after the greater good of the society. And if you are looking at the greater good of the society, then CSR follows. According to the new companies act, India became the first country in the world to mandate CSR by legislation. Now, government could have levied a tax and used this tax or cess in the manner in which govt. would have wanted to but government didn’t do that because basic objective was to leverage the capacity, the

competencies of the corporations public as well as private to put for the greater good of the society. But it takes a little while for the stakeholders to understand the new provisions. Obviously company had to take a little time to know because their core businesses are different. They have no experts in doing CSR either they had to hire an expertise or they had to learn from others. It was a learning phase where they tried to understand what to do in CSR. So, after the initial 3 years, things are getting better. Now they are clear about what they have to do and what they have not to do.

Q What is the trend of CSR implementation, in terms of sector, CMD involvement, business process

integration in PSU’s during 2013-2018?

A Since the initial learning was in the traditional sectors, obviously the focus was on education or on health. But

now slowly things are changing. Now they are focusing even on things like restoration of heritage, art and culture, sports, incubation of new technologies, conservation etc. But there was a bit difference in the expenditure which was incurred on different sectors and different domains specified under schedule VII of the act and there was also initially a bit difference in the spending of CSR funds throughout the country. Now continuous efforts have been made to ensure that spending is done right throughout the country.

Q How do you compare CSR implementation in PSU’s with that of private sector?

A Barely 50 PSU’s are exceeding 2%. So PSU’s are not driven by the profit motive and in some ways PSU’s are

doing even better than the private sector. At the same time, private sector is learning very fast so things are improving

very fast in the private sector as well. Initially, some companies who were not spending the 2% now realize that they have to spend this amount. So private sector is catching up very fast.

Q Can you think of any memorable project by any PSU making any lasting impact?

A There are many areas where some very interesting intervention has been made. Although lasting impact

we can talk about it once we have more years of comparison. For example one of the PSU’s sent a team to pick up all the garbage, all the left over material from Mount Everest by earlier expeditions. Just to clean up the environment likewise there is another PSU’s where all the recyclable material including paper is recycled. They produce their own paper so they don’t source from outside. I think there are elements of excellence in many of them; it will be tough to pick one.

Q Though there is huge potential for CSR collaboration among top CSR spending PSU’s, CSR collaboration is

not evolving in India. What can be done to promote CSR collaboration for making lasting impact?

dr. Madhukar Gupta is an Electrical Engineer, MBa and law graduate. he was selected as a Mason Fellow by harvard for a Master’s in Public administration in 2006. the Government of india sent him for a Master’s in Public Policy at Maxwell, Syracuse. he has been awarded a Phd n Economics in 2010. This officer is presently additional Secretary, Ministry of Public Enterprises and heavy industries.

dr. Gupta focused on Public Policy in uS and China with experts on economic growth, public sector management, infrastructure, corporate finance and development at harvard, Mit, Syracuse, Maryland, Cornell and Fletcher School. he has won many national awards from nPC and naBard. indian and international universities have hosted him as a visiting faculty and scholar, including BitS where he has been adjunct faculty for more than 20 years. dr. Gupta has presented professional papers in nearly three dozen countries.

Barely 50 PSu’s are exceeding 2%. So PSu’s are not driven by

the profit motive and in some ways PSu’s are doing even better than

the private sector. at the same time, private sector is learning very fast so things are improving very fast in the private sector as well. initially, some companies who were not spending

A There is a provision for pooling of resources. Basically if more than one company will come together, they can

act as a force multiplier. So every company, every entity has its own sense when they come together, their forces get multiplied.

Q Do you feel any need for change in the CSR guideline of DPE after 2013, based on your experiences?

A Some provisions can be sharpened. As I mentioned earlier, provisions regarding unspent balances. So there

are some grey areas which can be plugged.

Q CSR awards has been a fashion in India which is losing its credibility fast as there are more awards

then impact on the ground. Your comments

A It has become rather fashionable to be giving CSR awards. Many agencies and entities have been

announcing CSR awards without really contributing sustainably to the government. As far as awards are concerned, why should people rush into awards? If awards are to be given they should be given by the government or by independent agencies. CSR awards given to people who are not deserving of them will send a wrong message down the line.

Q CSR Data compilation & sharing was planned to be done by DPE in 2009, which shifted to TISS

afterwards. What is its status now?

A The DPE had collaborated with TISS for a year. That arrangement was only for one year and seized to exist

after that year. Monitoring is basically done by the companies or by the government. Basic idea is to get information at regular intervals because after all parliament also has a right to know. So since they ask questions, we should get the information at regular intervals.

Q CSR impact monitoring is an idea VISION has been promoting since 2010. Do you think time has come

for impact monitoring?

A Impact has to be measured in some tangible form. Let us say, ROI (Return on Investment). Companies are

very good at calculating ROI, so if they can do it for business processes, why not for social processes. We should look at the ROI of all projects which are undertaken by corporate.

Q PSU’s CSR has been a leader in the CSR domain in India. Do you think CSR impact monitoring needs to

be started by DPE for PSU’s to lead the process of impact monitoring mandatory for all?

A The corporate are responsible for the execution of CSR projects. The boards of directors as well as the

independent directors are there. So, we also monitor what they are doing. But according to the act, it is the responsibility of the company. u

IDFC Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) arm of IDFC Group, has partnered Vasudhara Dairy, to bring

financial inclusion to over 1000 unbanked villages in the tribal districts of Gujarat and Maharashtra, using Financial Inclusion Devices or interoperable microATMs.

This initiative will enable thousands of farmers to now access financial services in their villages. Farmers in these unbanked locations are compelled to travel 5-10 kilometers to reach a traditional ATM or bank branch.

The first few Financial Inclusion Devices were officially handed over at a ceremony in Mogarwadi village, around 25 kilometres from Valsad, in the presence of Shri. Sangram Chaudhary, Executive Director of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Shri. N Vashi, Managing Director of Vasudhara Dairy, Dr. NS Rajan, Group CHRO, Group CMO and CEO of IDFC Foundation and Shri. Amit Kumar, Head – Personal Banking, IDFC Bank.

Established in 1973, Vasudhara Dairy is the District Cooperative of Valsad and serves the tribal districts of Valsad, Navsari and Dangs. The dairy procures a significant 800,000 litres of milk a day. Vasudhara dairy has been continuously working towards improving the quality of life of dairy farmers. Its efforts in bringing financial inclusion to the locations it serves, is one more significant step in this direction.

Vasudhara Dairy’s initiative in the 1000 villages ties in with IDFC Foundation’s flagship programmes on Financial Inclusion and Dairy Development (Shwetdhara), which aim to enhance rural livelihoods on a national scale.

The Financial Inclusion device or interoperable microATM is a digital innovation by IDFC Bank that has helped build access to banking services and convenience even in the most remote locations in our country.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. NS Rajan, said, “Financial inclusion is key to improving the quality of life in rural India. Within the rural landscape, the dairy sector is an area which provides livelihood to millions of marginal, small and landless farmers. Many of them are excluded from the financial mainstream. Thus, we have identified it as an area of large scale social intervention.”

“It is a privilege to work with Vasudhara on realising its dream of creating financial inclusion for dairy farmers. Vasudhara is perhaps the first dairy cooperative to envision a project of this scale, under the able leadership of Mr. Vashi who saw inclusion as a possibility in these villages,” Dr. Rajan added.

The biggest issue faced by dairy farmers is the access to their own funds as the nearest bank branch or ATM is located several kilometres away. Vasudhara Dairy has sought to address this pain point by joining hands with IDFC Foundation and IDFC Bank.

“This transformative programme will result in deployment of Financial Inclusion Devices at milk collection centres in every village, visited by dairy farmers on a daily

basis. These devices offer convenience as they enable cash outs and all basic transactions. For many beneficiaries, it is also their first brush with digital payments. It also promotes a spirit of entrepreneurship as the Financial Inclusion Devices are operated by village residents. This model has huge potential for scale up due to its efficiency and cost effectiveness,” Dr. Rajan added.

The Financial Inclusion Device or microATM comprises a tab, a biometric reader and a thermal printer. Dairy farmers residing in the village and holding an account in any bank, can now avail of all basic inclusion services, including deposits and withdrawals, fund transfer, remittances and bill payments, in their village; thus saving them significant time and money spent in travelling long distances to the nearest banking facility. Farmers can also open accounts on these devices, using Aadhaar-enabled biometric authentication in just 4 minutes.

Vivel, ITC’s leading personal care brand and one of India’s most trusted brands collaborated with the

professional feminist organization, Azad Foundation to launch Parvaz – A Feminist Leadership Programme to help transform communities. The mission is to equip young women with comprehensive training to become community leaders and catalysts for local change.

Ujjivan Financial Services in partnership with PiramalSwasthya, an initiative under the aegis of

Piramal Foundation announced the launch of Mobile Primary Healthcare Programme in Pune, Mumbai and Nashik. The Programme targets the unserved and under-served, and endeavors to make quality primary healthcare services available, accessible and affordable for all.

In India, basic healthcare is a critical challenge for the unserved and underserved populace, due to lack of resources, lack of adequate medical centres and steep costs of treatments. Maharashtra has made significant progress in providing healthcare facilities to the residents over the last few decades. However, despite the progress, the State has a long way to go in achieving the desired health goals. The infant mortality rate of 24 per 100 live births and maternal mortality of 68 per 1 lakh live births (source – National Family Health Survey 4 and NITI Aayog) are significantly high. Inequity in access to healthcare services, as evidenced by health outcomes in Maharashtra, makes it imperative to come up with supportive programmes to provide available, accessible and affordable healthcare to the underprivileged communities.

Commenting on the initiative,Ms. Sudha Suresh, MD & CEO, Ujjivan Financial Services said, “Ujjivan has always conducted self-sustained social development programmes for the benefit of the community at large and believed in its CSR well before it was made mandatory under the Companies Act, 2013.This financial year amongst other CSR initiatives, Ujjivan has partnered with Piramal Foundation for executing various CSR Programs on behalf of Ujjivan and in collaboration with Piramal Swasthya endeavors to provide technology enabled health services to the community at large, specifically the unserved and underserved.”

Mr. Vishal Phanse, CEO, PiramalSwasthya said, “PiramalSwasthya envisions transforming the health ecosystem of India through high impact solutions, thought leadership and partnerships. This collaborative initiative of providing healthcare services to underserved communities is a high impact solution, with specific focus on availability of accessible and affordable healthcare services. WRI India Ross Center for Sustainable Cities, with support from FedEx Express, the world’s largest

express transportation company and a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. announced on 5th April the “Better Bus Challenge”, a competition to augment the quality, safety and efficiency of public bus systems in India. The open innovation challenge will bring together ideas from manufacturers, technology and service providers, mobility entrepreneurs, NGOs, corporations, and transit agencies to co-create solutions in the public bus sector.

With around 70 million people traveling on buses, state-run public bus providers play an essential role in connecting people in cities across India. Transit agencies, which operate the public bus networks across India, carry more than 60% of the road passengers, competing with alternate mobility solutions that operate on-demand, and can offer greater comfort and service quality. Highlighting the need and importance of public bus systems in India, Dr. O.P. Agarwal, CEO, WRI India, said, “By 2021, it is estimated that India will need around 650,000 buses to cater to its transit needs. There is a need for decision- makers to broaden their perspective of urban transportation beyond traditional models to identify and implement strategies to meet this ever-growing demand in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly manner.”

The challenge will address one of three categories: Operations Management and Efficiency, New Service Models, and Commuter Experience. The ‘Better Bus Challenge’ will offer the top three solutions a financial award of USD 50,000 or INR 32,00,000each. The cash reward will be supplemented with a year-long mentorship to collaborate with transit agencies to design and implement solutions which cater to the needs of cities. Champions in the transit agencies will manage the year-long demonstration projects, and help measure their impact with the support from WRI India Ross Center.

FedEx and WRI India Ross Center have worked together

over the last seven years to assist cities in improving public transportation by addressing issues such as service quality, and fleet and fuel selection and training. Globally, the collaboration has helped nearly five million daily transit users, trained more than 9,000 transit professionals, and reduced 63,908 tons of CO

2 emissions.“We believe that the more connected a community is, the

more it thrives. We are excited to support the launch of the ‘Better Bus Challenge’ and believe that this unique platform will encourage stakeholders to create innovative solutions for the public bus transit system in India, making it more affordable, accessible and sustainable for everyone,” said

Jack Muhs, president, FedEx Express Middle East, Indian subcontinent and Africa.

FedEx support for this project is part of the FedEx Cares initiative, under which FedEx has committed to invest $200 million in more than 200 communities by 2020 to create opportunities and deliver positive change around the world.

“In India, public bus transport is the backbone for two-thirds of commuters, connecting them to jobs, schools, health care and places of economic opportunity,” said Amit Bhatt, director, Integrated Transport, WRI India. “By bolstering their service with innovative technology, transit agencies can make public bus services more efficient, accessible and comfortable for all.”

Keep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic community improvement nonprofit organization, announced the

awarding of grant funding to 42 communities as part of its Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. In addition, new marketing resources will be unveiled later this spring to help grant recipients and participating organizations spread the word in the fight to combat cigarette litter, the leading form of litter in America.

New grants from Keep America Beautiful, totaling $295,000, will be distributed to 42 organizations through the 2018 Cigarette Litter Prevention Program. Keep America Beautiful affiliates, local governments, business improvement districts, downtown associations, parks and recreation areas, and other organizations dedicated to ending litter and beautifying communities are receiving

grants. Since the establishment of the national initiative, communities in 49 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Canada have implemented the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program to reduce cigarette litter. Throughout its history, the program has helped reduce cigarette litter in the communities in which it has been implemented by an average of 50 percent.

“The 2018 grant recipients are charged with moving the program forward to help educate and inspire smokers to do the right thing,” said Helen Lowman, Keep America Beautiful president and CEO. “The new marketing assets,

which any community can localize and use, will enable affiliates, local governments, and other community groups to teach adult smokers about the negative impacts related to littering and the role they can play in improving their community.”

Since its establishment over 16 years ago, the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program has consistently cut cigarette butt litter by approximately half based on local measurements taken in the first four months to six months after program implementation. Survey results also demonstrate that as communities continue to implement and monitor the program those reductions are sustained or even increased over time. Keep America Beautiful has distributed over $3 million in grant funding to support local implementation of the program in more than 1,700

communities nationwide. To address cigarette butt litter,

Keep America Beautiful’s Cigarette Litter Prevention Program advocates that communities integrate four proven approaches:• Encourage enforcement of litter laws, including cigarette litter;• Raise awareness about the issue using public service messages;• Place ash receptacles at transition points such as entrances to public buildings; and• Distribute pocket or portable ashtrays to adult smokers.

The Cigarette Litter Prevention Program is supported by funding from Philip Morris USA, an Altria company; RAI Services Company; and the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco

Company.About Keep America BeautifulKeep America Beautiful, the nation’s iconic

The Arbor Day Foundation and Publix announced an expanded collaboration to help restore Florida’s water

ways with additional tree plantings in the Little Orange Creek Preserve and the Withlacoochee River Watershed, building on the inaugural watershed partnership which had focused on the cleaning and restoration of the Ocklawaha River Watershed in Alachua, Marion and Lake Counties in Florida.

The combined projects made possible by the generous support of Publix have planted more than 230,000 trees throughout the counties in Florida, encompassing more than 300 acres of land. Because of the success of the plantings Publix is helping restore water bodies deemed impaired by the Environmental Protection Agency, providing critical habitat for a variety of wildlife and aquatic species as well as expanding important conservation lands in the state of Florida.

“Publix’s continued commitment to the watersheds of Florida illustrate how positive and large an impact that can be accomplished through the planting of trees,” said Dan Lambe, Arbor Day Foundation, president. “We salute Publix and their leadership in the use of tree planting to help restore water quality to the state of Florida and hope these projects inspire others to follow suit.”

The initial impact of these two additional projects will benefit the region over the next half-a-century and will result in the restoration of two cleared former plantation sites which will restore natural water flow, creating a high-quality wetland habitat with in the Little Orange Creek system. Additionally, the plantings will reduce nitrogen and phosphorus in the Withlacoochee river which will continue to restore fresh groundwater quality.

“Reducing our water use through process improvements at our retail and support locations is an important way to minimize our impact on natural resources,” said Maria Brous, Publix director of media and community relations. “Balancing our consumption through strategic collaborations that protect and restore watersheds is another way to make an impactful difference. We are excited about our expanded work with the Arbor Day Foundation as we continue to work together

towards strengthening the sustainability of our water sources.”

Publix also encourages their customers to join their journey of sustainable efforts through the purchase of designated Publix reusable bags. A portion of the proceeds from sales of these reusable bags are used to support sustainability projects throughout their operating area.

Robert A. Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company, announced an innovative plan

to dedicate more than $100 million in company resources, including cash, products and services, to reinvent the patient and family experience in children’s hospitals across the globe. This initiative will roll out over five years, expanding the Company’s rich legacy of supporting children’s hospitals, which dates back to Walt Disney.

“Disney’s timeless stories have touched hearts and lifted spirits for generations, and we believe they can bring comfort to children and families going through a very difficult time,” said Mr. Iger. “Using the powerful combination of our beloved characters and legendary creativity, we’re planning to transform the patient experience in children’s hospitals around the world – creating a personalized and engaging atmosphere that will inspire young patients and ease the stress of a hospital stay.”

Leveraging its renowned “Imagineers”—the global experts in theme park and family entertainment design—the company plans to introduce a rich array of distinctly “Disney” elements into children’s hospitals. Drawing on their decades of creativity, and working with patient care experts, Imagineers will use some of the world’s most iconic characters and stories to weave together many different touchpoints and experiences creating a supportive atmosphere that is personal, warm and entertaining for patients and families during their time at the hospital. Concepts for these elements include:• A new RFID-based system allowing patients to

customize their hospital visit by choosing their favorite Disney stories and characters, which will surround them during their stay. The system will also unlock special elements to further personalize and enhance the experience, such as “enchanted” artwork that comes alive.

• Themed treatment and patient rooms featuring interactive murals of Disney stories, bed linens and gowns featuring each child’s favorite characters, and personalized in-room entertainment. Additionally, well stocked mobile “play carts” will include Disney-themed games and activities to give families something to do together to help alleviate stress and boredom.

• Disney first-run movies and television shows, available both in-room and in themed pop up movie theaters in the hospital, along with other Disney entertainment options.

• Disney customer-experience training for doctors, nurses

and staff. The renowned Disney Institute, a part of The Walt Disney Company that provides professional development training focused on leadership, employee engagement and high quality service, will create a customized program for healthcare professionals designed to foster a less stressful, patient and family-centric hospital experience.

The first hospital to work with Disney in this comprehensive new approach is Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. As the largest children’s hospital in the United States, recognized as a national leader in pediatric health, Texas Children’s will add valuable insight in collaboration with Disney on these and other new experiences.

“We are honored to be the inaugural hospital to collaborate with Disney on this exciting patient-focused initiative,” said Mark A. Wallace, President and CEO of Texas Children’s Hospital. “Patient care is at the center of our mission, and in addition to providing the highest-quality medical care to children, we strive to make the hospital experience as enjoyable and stress-free as possible for every patient and their family. We are looking forward to working with Disney to enhance our efforts in this area.”

Disney is working with a panel of medical experts, including doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, parents and child life professionals from around the world, to advise on the best ways Disney can help hospitals create a more personalized and comforting experience for patients and families.

This new initiative to reimagine the children’s hospital experience is part of the Company’s “Team of Heroes” community outreach and philanthropy efforts. The Walt Disney Company is dedicated to delivering comfort, happiness and inspiration for families around the world and recognizes it takes a team to make a significant impact.

Taco Bell announced that it’s partnering with Guild Education to provide education support for

all 210,000 team members in its system of 7,000 restaurants in the U.S. As one of Guild’s largest partners to offer education benefits across its entire system, Taco Bell team members will have access to personalized college advisors and tuition discounts for thousands of classes, certificates and degrees from day one of their career at Taco Bell.

“When we surveyed our employees, education support was one of the top three things they asked for,” said Frank Tucker, Global Chief People Officer at Taco Bell. “The barriers to achieving their education goals were time, money and support. Our partnership with Guild delivers on all of these needs for our employees through access to online classes, financial aid guidance, tuition assistance and a personal counselor to support each student in real time.”

All Taco Bell corporate and franchise employees will have access to Guild’s academic and financial aid coaches and discounts to Guild’s education partners – a network of 80 online non-profit universities and learning providers, offering Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, programs such as high school completion and English-as-a-second-language and a wide selection of certificates. Taco Bell corporate employees, along with employees of participating franchisees, will also have access to up to

$5,250 per calendar year in tuition assistance including books and supplies, paid up front so that employees don’t have any out of pocket costs. Additionally, all employees can get college credit for on-the-job restaurant training, which could save an employee up to an additional $5,000, bringing their potential total savings to more than $10,000.

Taco Bell piloted its partnership with Guild in 2017 in about 700 corporate-owned restaurants, and more than 2,000 employees have since worked with a Guild coach to go back to school. Those who enrolled in a course, program or degree through Guild had a 98% retention rate over six months, a 34% increase over employees not enrolled. This added benefit will support Taco Bell’s plans to create 100,000 new jobs in the U.S. as part of the company’s 2022 growth goals. In 2018 alone, Taco Bell plans to open more than 250 new restaurants in the U.S., creating thousands of new jobs and increasing the

In celebration of Women’s History Month, JetBlue and The JetBlue Foundation are

bringing attention to the great work being done by the Rwandan Girls Initiative (RGI) whose mission is to educate and empower the girls of Rwanda to reach their highest potential. JetBlue was recently introduced to RGI through their inflight entertainment partner - The Nantucket Project (TNP). Last fall, the JetBlue Foundation helped fly several women involved with RGI to Nantucket for the TNP annual gathering.

President of the JetBlue Foundation, Joanna Geraghty, and Rwandan President Paul Kagame are featured in a special video highlighting the importance of providing access to STEM to students from traditional under-represented communities. This is airing onboard all JetBlue flights throughout March as the airline celebrates Women’s History Month.

Just two decades ago, young Rwandan women would not have had access to a

primary STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) education, an opportunity that’s now available through RGI at the Gashora Girls Academy of Science and Technology. Similar to the Rwanda Girls Initiative, JetBlue started the JetBlue Foundation in 2013 to encourage young people to pursue STEM education as early as possible in their academic careers. The JetBlue Foundation focuses on those that are traditionally underserved in the aviation industry, including women and people of color.

TNP brings fresh ideas to curious audiences via live talks, short original films, and unforgettable experiences. Much like JetBlue and our STEM-focused Foundation, TNP is supportive of endeavors encouraging girls and women to pursue STEM education and careers.

Smithfield Foods, Inc., and Food Lion have partnered for the second annual Easter Eats donation, a Food Lion

Feeds initiative to provide Easter meals to families facing hunger. Together, Smithfield and Food Lion delivered a total of 300 Easter meal bags each containing a Smithfield ham and an assortment of sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, cornbread stuffing, carrots, brown gravy mix, and more.

Part of Smithfield’s and Food Lion’s shared mission to alleviate hunger and address food insecurity across the country, the Easter Eats donation served families in need at two donation events: one in southeastern Virginia and the second in central West Virginia.

“We’re hopeful that this donation of delicious Easter staples of Food Lion side items and Smithfield ham will make the holiday extra special for hundreds of families in

the towns and cities we serve,” said Benny Smith, manager of community relations for Food Lion’s Eastern market. “We’re grateful for partners like Smithfield who share our commitment to help end food insecurity in Virginia, West Virginia, and beyond.”

The first of two Easter Eats donation events took place in Kearneysville, West Virginia, where Smithfield and Food Lion delivered 150 meal bags to the local community during a mobile donation event at Leetown Baptist Church community facility.

Smithfield and Food Lion distributed the remaining 150 meal bags to those in need during a second mobile donation event in Norfolk, Virginia, with help from the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore. Volunteers from each of the participating food banks assisted with the

preparation, packaging, and distribution of the donations.“As a food company, we believe that it is our great honor

and responsibility to feed people, especially those in need,” said Dennis Pittman, senior director of hunger relief for Smithfield Foods. “Easter is a time for loved ones to come together and we are proud to partner with Food Lion Feeds for this heartwarming donation of wholesome meals, to keep the focus on family and friends this holiday.”

The Easter Eats donation supports Food Lion’s pledge to provide 500 million meals by the end of 2020 through its Food Lion Feeds program. To date, the company has already donated more than 377 million meals. Smithfield’s contribution was part of the company’s Helping Hungry Homes® initiative. Since the program’s inception in 2008, Smithfield has provided more than 100 million servings

of protein to food banks, disaster relief efforts, and community outreach programs nationwide.

Q Your profile is rich as a champion for the cause of collaborative CSR. What attracted you to this &

what have been your major experiences for collaborative CSR?

A Earlier individual companies across the IT-BPM industry were trying to break an iceberg with a

pickaxe. The problem remained that even with 50 people making the same efforts, the resultant impact was minimal. But in case all these fifty people were to combine their efforts and pick up a big hammer to do it, then definitely, the iceberg will break and that’s where our whole focus is.

NASSCOM has 3000+ member companies. If you look at the IT-BPM industry, there are about 20 - 30 large companies followed by 200-300 mid-sized companies and a long list of 15000+ small companies.

When we started with the programme on Digital Literacy, we realized that certain companies wanted to invest their CSR money into good causes, but they did not have enough funds to start something on their own and that’s where we said, can we all club of efforts together and make it happen! And that is how collaborative CSR

started to help bridge the gap between digital haves and digital have-nots.

Another thing that we observed was – in the area of providing employability enhancement driving skills. Today if we look at the Indian demography, fifty percent Indians are first generation graduates. We decided to work with them and help them get better employment opportunities. And that is where the second part of collaborative CSR came in where the companies joined hands together to get these graduates placed in well-paying jobs as they became a part of a ready resource pool for thee IT-BPM sector.

Those are just a couple ways through which the NASSCOM FOUNDATION initiated collaborative CSR.

The third model which became a huge success story for collaborative CSR was city based collectives like Pune City Connect (PCC), where we are working with Pune Municipal Corporation on one hand and the city collective of PCC (comprising of likeminded corporates), where one of the goals is to make Pune 100% digitally literate.

The aim is to have at least one person from every household become digitally literate by 2020 across the Pune district. That’s where we started getting in donors

Shrikant joined NASSCOM Foundation as the Chief Operating Officer in September 2014 and quickly scaled up to the position of Chief Executive Officer. He plans to bring in more agility in the foundation’s working by directing, administering, and coordinating the internal operational activities, while contributing towards the goal of ‘technology for Good’ through five of NASSCOM Foundation’s mainstream programs. With over 25 years of experience in education sector, Shrikant played a key role in the success of aptech; starting in 1989, fresh out of delhi university and going on to become Senior General Manager for the company.Prior to joining naSSCOM Foundation, he was based out Malaysia, as head Corporate learning, aPaC and MEna, at Globalnxt university (formerly universitas 21 Global or u21Global), an Online Graduate School owned by Manipal Global Education, helping thousands of people working in corporates across the Asia-pacific, Middle-east and north african regions with limited or no access to good quality academic opportunities.as the CEO, Shrikant looks over the entire operations and strategy for NASSCOM Foundation while directly controlling five different programs. truly, a person with many hats, Shrikant’s extensive background in the skilling and education spaces will significantly complement NASSCOM Foundation, especially in the national digital Literacy Mission, naSSCOM knowledge network and the Connectit programs.

aligned to a particular cause under the umbrella where PMC, PCC and Corporates could come together and help make Pune, one of India’s first smart city.”

Q CSR in India is troubled by Adhoc charity orientation with a short-term perspective & unable

to get out of its grip & adapt strategic CSR with a long term orientation in which they can collaborate with appropriate partners. Your comments.

A Right from day one when the CSR Act got passed as a law in India, we have been running several

advocacy workshops where we got the corporates from across various cities together and helped them demystify the law further giving them pointers on how they can best adapt their CSR policy to it.

So in those organisations where we have been able to help them draft the policy, we encouraged them to have a long term vision on CSR. We made sure to educate them on how CSR should be treated as a long term project that actually creates a sustainable positive change in the society. We asked them to invest for a minimum of 2-3 years in one project and be patient when it comes to the impact mapping because a project like, for example, girl child’s education would not show immediate results, but the impact would definitely be seen in the future, and would be felt over a much longer time.

It is therefore important to understand what an organization’s CSR policy is and what kind of a time frame of impact it is looking at. Interestingly, a lot of organisations today have moved towards this impact driven CSR model. I can definitely vouch for the IT-BPM industry and is already showcased in one of our recent ‘Catalysing Change’ reports. Some of the findings from the report: • Growing number of companies spending 100% and

above of the CSR funds, among both MNCs and Non-MNCs: 61. 6% of the surveyed companies reported spends of 100% or above their prescribed CSR budget. This includes 63.3% of the MNCs and 68% of the Non-MNCs.

• Smaller sized companies (turnover below INR 100 Crore) proactively pushing CSR initiatives with full utilization of prescribed budget: While 57.57% of large companies, 53.3% of medium companies are spending 100% of CSR funds, an impressive 72.7% of small companies spending 100% of CSR funds.

• Underspending is a rare condition: Only 5% of companies surveyed reported a spend of less than 50% of their CSR budget.

• Education remains the top focus area of companies’

CSR activities especially in MNCs: 76% of MNCs reported highest CSR spend on Education. Other MNC focus areas:

• 12% on Hunger & poverty • 18% on Gender equality. • MNCs increasing liaison with government to tackle

developmental issues: While overall, 43.3% of participating companies confirmed working with the Central/State government in their socio-economic projects for 2016-17

Q NASSCOM has been very aggressive in promoting IT in various development domains including

disability. What has been the experience? Please share.

A We understand the importance of accessibility, and are continuously working towards this cause. We

were, along with NCPEDP championing the cause of ensuring that disabled people not just get a voice in this country but also contribute their part in its economic growth as proud citizens of India.

We are running two Centres of Excellence - One in Noida and another in Bangalore. We are training the Persons with Disabilities in employable skills so that they may get jobs in the IT or any other industry. Today, the IT-BPM industry has got less than 1% PwDs employed in it and we want to change this figure. We are continuously working towards getting more and more companies to absorb talented and skilled PWDs as their workforce.

In the RPD Act passed in 2016, the number of recognized disabilities has been changed from 7 to 31 providing more opportunities for all PwDs to be employed and help support their families.

Also at NASSCOM FOUNDATION, we promote social innovation, especially in the area of assistive technologies. Three years ago we helped this organisation named Innovision which had created this amazing refreshable braille keyboard for persons with disabilities at a fraction of the market available keyboards. Earlier such things costed in excess of INR 1.5 Lakhs when imported and their innovation promised to bring the costs down by a sixth of the available.

Another example could be of Soham Technologies, social innovators who even our Prime Minister recently mentioned in his ‘Mann ki Baat’. NASSCOM FOUNDATION supported them through mentoring a couple of years ago. Soham Technologies had developed a solution to help detect early childhood health risks, came to us as an innovation in its starting phase. We hand-held them for a period of one year, supported them and helped them test out their product.

Our belief is very simple – ‘It’s Our inability to see their ability that is our biggest disability’.

We have also been supporting CABI (Cricket Association for Blind India) along with an organization called Samarthanam, through the last couple of years and are glad to in some way help become a part of the world champion team.

In fact, in our flagship, The CSR Leadership Conference, we had a separate workshop devoted only to educate CSR and HR leads from across organizations on the RPD act and how they may heklp empower persons with disabilities.

We also have a portal called as ‘inclusion powered’: www.inclusion.nasscomfoundation.org, with the aim to bring the disability sector under one roof. We hope for it to become a one stop-shop for everything on ‘disability’ and encapsulate everything from assistive technologies and consultants to NGOs that promote accessibility and work on empowering PWDs.”

Q The major IT companies through their respective CSR foundations are busy in implementing various

developmental programs but the impact made by them needs much to be desired in absence of collaboration and a National Vision. Your comments.

A There are discussions that we are leading along with NASSCOM, with our member companies on areas

such as Med-Tech, Digital literacy, environment, education, accessibility skilling and many others, because, we are confident that it can have a huge national impact.

Q Do you believe the top IT companies combine their resources and enter into collaborative program that

can solve major National problem?

A Pune City Connect is a great example, already discussed above where the corporates and Pune

Municipal Corporation has joined hands together to make Pune digitally literate by 2020. They just reached a target of making 30,000 people digitally literate – A huge accomplishment for any city. We are already on our journey over there. Of course, these are our early steps. It needs to be amplified to a much larger scale but I think at least the first steps have been taken in the right direction. We are positive that we’ll be able to do more things, empower more people and positively impact more lives through collaborative CSR.

Q Does NASSCOM promote collaboration among ICT players for development in the social sector? If so.

Please share few examples.

A One big point before I answer this question, that I would want to address is how do we define ‘ICT

players’. To us, any particular company which has a prominent IT department is our potential member organisation and basically works in the ICT space. That means that most banks, retail organizations, manufacturing organizations, energy and utilities companies etc are ICT driven organizations.

In fact, Hero Honda Motors, are one of the biggest donors for our Haryana Vision Zero program where our goal is to reduce the number of fatalities due to road accidents in Haryana to ZERO. Our board permits us to work with anyone and everyone.

Another example that we may talk about is how during

the demonetization exercise last year, the whole industry came together and through its associates volunteered to train underserved people on various different cashless transaction tools. We had volunteers coming in from banks like RBS, Barclays, Bank of America, Retail organizations like Amazon, IT services companies like Accenture, Genpact, Financial product companies like Mastercard and even other NGOs like Youth for Sewa making it a true and complete example of joining hands to solve a larger issue. u

The agony and drastic conditions of the people in Dr. Kailash Nath Gupta’s village due to tuberculosis and lung diseases distressed him so much that he thought to be a doctor to help his villagers. Dr. Kailash Nath

Gupta belongs to a rural background. His native place is a small village near Firozabad (UP). The place is famous for glass work and bangles industry. Many people from his village used to work and are still working in these factories in Firozabad. The factories at that time, around 30 yrs ago used coal and wood for furnaces. The burning of coal and wood gave rise to high environmental pollution inside the premises. Tuberculosis and Lung disease especially COPD was very much prevalent in the population. There were neither Govt dispensaries nor qualified doctors. The workers and their families whenever they used to get ill were at the mercy of quacks to get treated.

At that time lot of people used to die because of Tuberculosis and lung related diseases specially COPD. The disease were more rampant in labourers and casual workers because of their exposure to industrial smoke, unhealthy living conditions, poor nutrition and smoking habits. Poor wages added to their woes and they could not afford treatment in cities.

After doing his MBBS, he used to visit to his village every Sunday and holiday to help these people. Even today when the medical facilities are much better and availability of medicines

have markedly improved; there is a section of people who are unable to purchase medicines. Dr Kailash used to help them with free samples and whatever medicines he could gather with the help of his friends. Now he has decided to form a welfare trust which is going to address the health concerns of the downtrodden and BPL people.

The incidence which he always remembers in his life is about a TB patient who was out casted from the village and was allowed to die in the fields, tied to a cot along with sheep and goats. This had left a deep mark in his mind and compelled him to work for the awareness among the masses. He has taken many educative and awareness seminars on lung diseases at many places like school, corporate houses, community halls etc. He has organised many camps along with pharma companies in slum areas and suburbs with free consultation. Dr Kailash did his post-graduation in TB & Respiratory diseases from National Institute of Tuberculosis and Respiratory diseases, New Delhi. This was a great learning period for him, both in academics and socially. This period helped him to develop a road map about how can he utilise his knowledge for betterment of the society. During this period he had the opportunity to interact with Eunuchs, who visited the OPDs for respiratory ailments. Along with tuberculosis patients he is actively working for the Eunuchs community. After post-graduation,he started working

would not have achieved his goals and stood where he is today.

He feel that anyone who wants to achieve or want to do something in life, has to work at the ground level with honesty and diligence and then only he can achieve his goals. He has developed Centre for Chest Diseases. Currently he is running 3 such centres, in Janakpuri, Dwarka and Najafgarh. In all these

centres they provide free treatment to BPL card holders, war widows, their families and Eunuchs.

They are in a plan to open many more such centres in our country which can provide specialise treatment for Chest ailments with compassion and care at very affordable cost and they will always be free for BPL families, War widows and their families and Eunuchs. u

Q What is your say about drug abuse?

A Drugs as medicine are meant to help sick people, but in drug abuse, people use drugs to alter their brain function

in harmful and dangerous ways. Drug abuse is defined as a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically major, impairment or suffering. It means any use of drugs that causes physical, psychological, legal or social harm to the user or to others who are affected by the drug user’s behaviour. When drugs enter the brain, they interfere with its normal processing and can eventually lead to changes in how well it works. Over time, drug use can lead to addiction, a devastating brain disease in which people can’t stop using drugs even when they really want to and even after it causes terrible consequences to their health and other parts of their lives. Your brain is who you are. It has various centres for regulation which act together in harmony perceiving under all sorts of situations. Overdosing of drugs disrupt the normal brain functioning.

Q How is drug abuse dreadful for any nation?

A The negative consequences of drug abuse affect not only individuals who abuse drugs but also their families and

friends, various businesses, and government resources. Drugs and crime undermine development by eroding social and human capital. This degrades quality of life and can force skilled workers to leave, while the direct impacts of victimisation, as well as fear of crime, may impede the development of those that remain. Iran tops the list of countries in terms of drug abuse whereas Switzerland is claimed to be least affected country worldwide.

Q What are the common drugs which are abused?

A Commonly abused drugs in India and worldwide includes alcohol, prescription drugs like opioids given as

a pain suppressant, cannabis, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin etc. All of them are responsible for serious consequences which can be fatal. The National Household Survey of Drug Use in the country is the first systematic effort

to document the nation-wide prevalence of drug use. Alcohol (21.4%) was the primary substance used (apart from tobacco) followed by cannabis (3.0%) and opioids (0.7%).There was a marked variation in alcohol use prevalence in different states of India (current use ranged from a low of (7%) in the western state of Gujarat (officially under Prohibition) to 75% in the North-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Tobacco/nicotine is the most misused drug in the world. According to recent statistics carried out by the World Health Organisation, about 15 billion cigarettes are sold on a daily basis and it is predicted. By 2030, if trends continue as it is smoking will kill one in six people globally (WHO).Various studies conducted by WHO predict that on an average, smokers die 10 years earlier than nonsmokers and tobacco kills more than 7 million people each year, more than 6 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 890 000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.

The Centres for Disease Control indicated that more than 15% of the adolescent population between the ages of 12-18 years already smoked cigarette regularly and considers themselves as smokers. It had been found out that 95% of regular smokers start to smoke during adolescence, and the question arise whether these young people have correct information before taking the judgment to begin. This trend is very dangerous for future of mankind.

Alcohol abuse is related to not only addiction but also to traffic fatalities, violence, cirrhosis, liver failure, permanent brain damage, and many deaths throughout the world each year. About 10 percent to 15 percent of people with

Every form of addiction is bad, no matter whether narcotic be alcohol or morphine or idealism.

alcoholism develop cirrhosis, the condition can lead to death if alcohol consumption is not reduced or stopped. Worldwide, 3.3 million deaths every year result from harmful use of alcohol, this represent 5.9 % of all deaths. The harmful use of alcohol is a causal factor in more than 200 disease and injury conditions.

Cannabis is an incredibly popular and widely used drug in India and is known as ganja, charas or bhang. India has a long history of cannabis use, and the drug is one of the five sacred plants mentioned in the Hindu texts, the Vedas. It is typically associated with the Hindu deity Shiva, who is believed to like the hemp plant. Some figures place regular cannabis users as high as 10 million in India. Many of these heavy users suffer from major health problems including respiratory disorders, memory impairment, mental disturbance, digestive tract problems and problems with sleep.

Over the counter medications(OTC) are easily available without a prescription and some are highly abused and addictive. However, many people who abuse these medications eventually turn to other more powerful drugs. OTC medications that contain Dextromethorphan are the most abused. However, caffeine pills and OTC medicine that contain ephedrine are also commonly abused.

Methamphetamine is one of the abused stimulant and is often used to suppress appetite(used by obese people to shed weight), increase energy and alertness(used by students to combat examination pressure), and for the euphoric effects.Methamphetamine use is linked to many serious physical and mental health concerns including violence, paranoia, insomnia, organ damage and brain damage. Apart from being highly addictive they can damage motor skills, problem solving skills and can also lead to sexual dysfunction.

A form of heroin known as brown sugar is commonly used in the country, which is made of a mixture of heroin which typically ranges between 20 to 60 percent purity, and adulterants in the form of chalk, zinc or other chemicals. Injecting drug users often suffer from cellulitis or other infections, and respiratory issues are common amongst users who smoke the substance.

Opium was used not only as a pleasurable substance but also as very important self-administered household remedy for range of illnesses, i.e., diarrhoea, dysentery, chills, malarial attacks, asthma, chronic coughs, and rheumatic pains etc. It was also administered to the infant in wrong belief that it will keep them quiet, calm and healthy. As per Mahabharata, Lord Krishna was tried to be poisoned by evil Putna by applying opium on her nipple. In 1813, the first Indian regulation on opium consumption was introduced and later in 1878, all India Opium Act permitted only licensed vendors to cultivate and sell opium to registered users .

Some of the club drugs like Methylepedoxymethamphetamine (street name is Ecstasy,

Adam lover’s Speed), Gamma hydroxybutyrate (Liquid Ecstasy), Ketamine (Special K, Vitamin K),Flunitrazepam (Forget -Me Pill), Methamphetamine (Speed, Ice, Chalk) and Lysergic acid diethylamide (Boomers, Purple Haze) are also in increasing trend of being abused.

Q What is drug trafficking? How is India in vulnerable zone in this regard?

A Drug trafficking is a global illicit trade involving the cultivation, manufacture, distribution and sale of

substances which are subject to drug prohibition laws. Drug Trafficking is a problem that resonates and reinforces itself in just about every part of the world. Drug trafficking is big business, bringing in a fifth of all profits from organised crime. It ravishes communities, endangers businesses, strains government institutions, and drags down the wider economy.

In 2016, 6 drug types accounted for nearly all drug trafficking offenses which include Methamphetamine: 33.6%, Cocaine: 19.8%, Marijuana: 17.6%, Heroin: 14.4%, Crack: 8.1%, Oxycodone: 2.8%, Other: 3.7%India's vulnerability in drug abuse

The fact that India is in close proximity to the largest producers of heroin and hashish-the Golden Triangle (Myanmar, Laos and Thailand) and Golden Crescent (Afghanistan-Pakistan-Iran)has made India's border vulnerable to drug trafficking. In India Drug-dependence is a major social issue in parts of India like North East, Punjab, Delhi , Maharashtra.

Q What are the vulnerable groups in this regard?

A The incidence of drug abuse among children and adolescents is higher than the general population. With

most of the drug users being in the productive age group of 18 to 35 years, the loss in terms of human potential is immeasurable. This is notably because youth is a time for experimentation and identity forming. Changing cultural values, increasing economic stress are some other reasons leading to initiation into drugs use.One of the major reasons for drug abuse is it’s glorification in popular media such as television series and films. Quite often it so happens that doing drugs is romanticized and some fictional positive aspects of the same are shown. The processes of industrialization, urbanization and migration have led to loosening of the traditional methods of social control rendering an individual vulnerable to the stresses and strains of modern life. At a very basic level this happens because the person concerned feels a desperate need to deal with stress, to get a momentary high or to just ‘fit in’ with his or her peers, as happens in the case of youngsters. It soon reaches a stage where this need becomes much more than other needs in life and the person begins to believe their survival depends on those drugs.

Q What are the major risk factors that lead to drug abuse?

A The National Institute on Drug Abuse indicates the following risk factors for developing drug abuse problems

(typically seen in adolescence) Unstable home environment, often due to drug abuse or mental illness of the parent, Poor relationship with parents, Inadequate supervision over adolescent's activities, Use of drugs by friends / peers, Permissive attitude towards their own drug use and the drug use of the adolescent ,Behavioural problems combined with poor parenting, Poor achievement in school, Apparent ambivalence or approval of drug use in the school, peer group or community, Availability of drugs in the community, peer group or home are all risks leading to drug abuse.

Q What are the harmful effects of drug abuse?

A •Drug abuse leads to physical, psychological, moral and intellectual decay. This means wastage of economic

potential of young generation.• At the national level, drug abuse is intrinsically linked with racketeering, crime, conspiracy, corruption, illegal money transfers, terrorism and violence, threatening the very stability of the governments. Drug abuse is emerged as public hazard and dangerous threat to human life.• drug abuse can lead to some serious consequences as per the route of administration like intravenous(heroin, amphetamines, cocaine etc.) cause viral disease like Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV which can effect vital organs like Liver and can prove fatal if left untreated. Also repeated injections at the same site can cause scarring of veins and blood vessels and can impose to serious infections and non healing wounds. Oral intake of drugs can cause dry mouth (decrease saliva production), jaw pain, nausea ,tooth discoloration , oral and oesophageal cancers and can ultimately lead to death. Drugs like cocaine , heroin which are snorted and snuffed through intranasal route can lead to nasal bleed, necrosis(tissue death) in septal nasal cartilage (perforation), sinusitis, anosmia (loss of smell) etc.

Q How is any drug detected after being abused?

A Alcohol, Heroin can be detected till 3-5 days in urine and up to 10-12 hours in blood. Amphetamines and Codeine

can be found till 1-2 days in urine and up to 12 hours in blood. Drugs such as Benzodiazepines can be estimated in urine up to 3-6 weeks after intake and 2-3 days in blood. Barbiturates, Cocaine can be detected in urine till approximate 2-4days and up to 12-48hours in blood.

Q How to detect drug abusers?

A People facing loss of appetite, increase in appetite, changes in eating habits, unexplained weight loss or

gain, slowed or staggering walk, poor co-ordination, awake at night, unusual lethargy, red watery eyes, pupils larger or smaller than usual, blank stare, cold, sweaty or shaking hands, puffy face, blushing or pale, unusual smell on breath, body or clothes, extreme hyperactivity, excessive talkativeness, running nose, hacking cough, Needle marks on lower arms, leg, nausea, vomiting, change in attitude or personality, in friends, sudden avoidance of old friends, won't talk about new friends, friends take drugs, changes in activities or hobbies, falling back art school academically, loss of interest in family or family activities, difficulty concentrating, forgetful, low self-esteem and apathetic, moodiness, irritability, silliness, paranoia, excessive need for privacy, withdrawn, secretive and stealing.

Q What are the strategies should be incorporated in eradication of drug abuse?

A The greatest toll is on the young. Every 12 seconds another school-age child experiments with illicit drugs for

the first time. Because drug abuse is a global problem, it requires a global solution. Government, Teachers, Parents, Health care personnel ,NGO, Media all should join hands in order to eradicate drug abuse.

ROlE OF GOVERnMEnTGovernment has been working by introducing comprehensive strategy involving specific programmes to bring about an overall reduction in use of drugs has been evolved by the various government agencies and NGOs and is further supplemented by measures like education, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation programmes. India has bilateral agreements on drug trafficking with 13 countries, including Pakistan and Burma.

June 26 is celebrated as International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking every year. It is an exercise undertaken by the world community to sensitize the people in general and the youth in particular, to the menace of drugs.

The Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act is a drug control law passed in 1966 to phamacognosy app & other relevant by the Parliament of India. It was established to enable the full implementation and enforcement of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985 by Chaman Chaudhary. The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment as the nodal agency has been supporting Integrated Rehabilitation Centre for Addicts (IRCAs) under the scheme of Prevention of Alcoholism and Substance (Substances) Abuse being run by voluntary organizations.

In 1999–2000, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, along with the United Nations office for Drugs and Crime, undertook for the first time, a major national study

on the extent, patterns and the trends of substance abuse in the country, a major component of which was a national household survey. In its 2010 report titled “Preventing Drug Use among Children and Adolescents”, National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) listed several factors that can enhance or mitigate adolescent risk for initiating or continuing to abuse drugs.Apart from above formulation of acts Government has been trying to combat with drug abuse eg. curbing activities like public smoking by imposing heavy fines.

India has a two-pronged strategy towards it- (a) running deaddiction centres in Government hospitals; and (b) supporting NGOs involved in this endeavour. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the Government of India runs a

number of drug-de-addiction centres in various Government hospitals across the country. The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment has been implementing a Scheme for Prohibition and Drug Abuse Prevention since the year 1985-86. The approach of this Scheme is to provide the whole range of services including awareness generation, identification, counselling, treatment and rehabilitation of addicts through voluntary and other organizations

ROlE OF TEaChERSThere should be launch ofeffective programs which would help improve students' self-esteem, reduce stress and anxiety, or increase activities. Teachers should try to emotionally relate to their students when required and create a friendly atmosphere especially in adolescent age groups. There should be chapter which should be introduced in the curriculum which would educate and guide the students about the

addictive and harmful effects of drug consumption even by trying it just for once.

FaMilY SuppORTParents should also provide emotional support at home providing time and interest in kid's routine activities. There should be healthy and a disciplined environment at home which would facilitate an emotional connect thus help building self confidence and self worth in growing kids.

ROlE OF phYSiCianSPhysicians should be cautious in prescribing long term medications like pain killers and consider medications with less abuse potential. Close monitoring of patients at higher risk, reducing the length of time between visits for refills so fewer pills are on hand. It is always beneficial to educate patient and attendants about possible potential risks of medications including the risk of sharing them with others.

dEaddiCTiOn and REhaBiliTaTiOnIt is the process which involves concepts from medical, behavioural to psychotherapeutic treatment in order to recover from drug abuse or dependence. During the initial stages of recovery, the body must rid itself of drugs. This is called the detoxification period. Detoxification can last several days to several weeks depending on the drug. Coping with withdrawal symptoms is often the most challenging part which includes symptoms like nausea, anxiety, depression, sweating, muscle aches to seizures etc.

Different medications are used to treat different withdrawal symptoms. Some of the commonest medications prescribed include Benzodiazepines whichreduce anxiety and irritability as they have a sedative property. These are prescribed by physicians in regulated dose and under supervision. Another antidote medication used is Clonidine. Mainly used to treat alcohol and opiate withdrawal which acts by reducing sweating, cramps, muscle aches and anxiety, tremors and seizures .Various other medications also form a part of drug de addiction which are prescribed by the physicians under their constant supervision and for a limited time interval.

There are various de addiction and rehabilitation centres situated in various parts of India and world which work on specific grounds in helping an individual to cope up with withdrawal andstress post recovery. After enrolling into programs of these centres, individual is asked to stay at the centre for a period of time where they work on various principles like addiction counselling, constructive recreational activities, behavioural therapy, physical and mental fitness, lifestyle balance, managing thoughts and feelings, coping up with surges and after care support. Proper schedule is provided to the individual post recovery with guidance and details of follow up visits. u

Saurabh Shukla outshines Ajay devgn

Based on the real life story of an Income Tax officer, Raid is about the longest-running Income Tax raid in India’s history. IT officials raided the house of a businessman, and Congress MLA, Sardar Inder Singh in Kanpur on July 16, 1981 and recovered an

unprecedented amount of undeclared assets in cash and gold. After the critically acclaimed Aamir and No One Killed Jessica,

director Rajkumar Gupta’s last venture was Vidya Balan’s forgettable affair, Ghanchakkar. Three years later, the filmmaker is back with what he is best at - telling real life stories. And Ajay Devgn’s Raid is the right vehicle for the comeback.

Ajay plays Income Tax officer Amay Patnaik – based on the life of Sharda Prasad Pandey, who was the Income Tax commissioner of Lucknow in 1981 – while Ileana essays the role of his dutiful wife.

Saurabh Shukla essays the role of a menacing and manipulative politician who is clearly a Congress MLA, who is shown meeting ‘Madamji/ ‘Prime Minister Sahiba’, though we never get to see her face.

Raid is dialogue-heavy, with Gupta relying mainly on Devgn’s intense performance to build his case. Right from his morning tea to a visit to the office, officer Patnaik is all about heavy-duty dialogues that are high on the moral quotient. Not just him, even others tend to speak similar language when the officer is around. While Devgn fans may love these seemingly ‘seeti-worthy’ moments in the film, you are likely to be put off if you aren’t one.

innovation:Leadership also involves a continuous search for new ideas. It compels an individual to continuously evaluate the existing modes of business operations so that more efficient and effective systems can be evolved and adopted. In other words, leadership is a continuous effort for synergy (optimization of performance) in organizations.

PrioritizationLack of focus is the reason many small companies fail. The best leaders solve that problem through ruthless prioritization. They identify the three most impactful projects from a list of ten and focus their team on those three. They help keep their employees’ proverbial plates just the right amount of full.

Warmth and CompetenceResearch out of Harvard Business School found that the best leaders have two unique qualities: warmth and competence. They followed leaders from around the world and discovered that these two characteristics set the best bosses apart. Manager’s need both of these qualities to lead with their head and their heart.

CharacterIf you don’t trust their character then nothing else really matters. There are many key attributes of a good leader that are derivatives of legitimate character and integrity. Leaders that can’t be trusted are dangerous and, more often than not, end up being a cancer to the organization that is painful and costly to remove.

Lifelong CuriosityThe world is constantly evolving. Without an intense curiosity and a desire to learn, you will be left behind and increasingly unable to converse, much less keep up, with your peers. Staying abreast of new learning opportunities requires a humble awareness that what you know is not enough and that you always have more to learn.

Good NegotiatorDoing business across ethnic, national and regional boundaries requires strong negotiating skills. If you can add these skills to an innate enjoyment of the gamesmanship involved in negotiating, you will become a highly effective negotiator.

PresenceA certain charisma surrounds you if you are an influential leader. Part of it — but only part — is position or title. The bigger portion is dress, self-confidence, energy level, interest in other people and comfort with the challenges at hand. You may not want to believe these things matter, but they do.

Leadership and learning are

indispensable to each other.
