CENTURIONS

The Centurions were a dedicated battalion of soldiers who led the legendary Roman armies into battle. Named after those storied warriors, the krewe was founded in 1979 by a group of Harahan-River Ridge business-men. After presenting its fi rst two parades on Jefferson Highway, Centurions switched in 1983 to the standard Veterans Memorial Boulevard route. In 1988 the group changed its parade night from Tuesday to the second Sunday before Fat Tuesday, before moving to its current Friday evening slot. Feeling that the Metairie parade scene needed some new energy, the founders of this coed-club, Jefferson Parish’s newest, is not named after a fi gure from mythology but rather from a literary classic, The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland, written in 1865 by Lewis Carroll. The krewe promises a parade that will feature interaction with the crowd as well as live music and a host of local celebrities.

CENTURIONS moves to prime time Saturday night its 41st annual procession, which will be led by the Archbishop Rummel Marching Band. This year’s theme is FINS & FESTIVALS. Floats will depict sea creatures such as Stingray, Eel, and Sea Turtle. Royalty for 2020 are King Centurions XLI, C. J. Bruno and Queen Centurions XLI Emma Grace Bourgeois. The 20-fl oat parade, produced by Rizzuto & Company, features a new Royal Barge for the captain, a special Magnolia School fl oat and a Ladies Auxiliary fl oat. March-ing bands will participate in the Rhythm on the Route band contest. Riding as Grand Marshalls will be the 2019 Little League World Series championship team from River Ridge, Louisiana. Signature items to be tossed by the krewe’s 300 male and female mem-bers are anodized doubloons in purple (captain) and aluminum (krewe). New this year will be hand-decorated swords. The parade traditionally features nearly 60 units. The Centuri-ons Celebration ball will be held on January 18, 2020, at the Landmark Hotel in Metairie.

Led by Co-Captains Dr. Joey and Gwen Lacoste, the Magical Krewe of MadHatters is a club of 400 male and female riders that promises many innovations in its inau-gural 26-fl oat presentation. In place of a king and queen, celebrity MadHatter (Bobby Hebert) and Alice (Amanda Shaw) will ride. Other recognizable fi gures include Mike DeTillier as King of Hearts and Scoot in the Afternoon as the Black Knight. Spouses Jo Jo Hebert (White Queen) and Linda DeTillier (Red Queen) will also appear. Float builder Mac Cantrell and his wife Kathy will ride as Grand Marshals. Media personali-ties include Karen Swensen, Doug Mouton, Juan Kincaid, Dave Bernard, Sula Kim, and Gina Swanson. Live music will be provided by Amanda Shaw, Rockin’ Dopsie, the Top Cats, Table for Four, Red Fury, and the Todd O’Neill Band. First year collectible throws include lighted MadHatter signature scepters, hats, pendant beads, footballs, and cups.The MadHatter High Tea Gala, the club’s version of a Carnival ball, will be held Saturday, January 25, 2020, at Copeland Tower in Metairie.
