Centrex Inliner fans are widely used in square ducts as cleanair boosters in both supply and exhaust systems where the installation of conventional blowers is impractical. Theircompact design gives designers an excellent alternative toconventional blowers.
Direct driveDirect drive models with performance to nearly 3000 CFM tostatic pressures above 1 1/2".
Standard duty belt driveBelt drive models with performance to above 27,000 CFM tostatic pressures above 2 1/2".
High Pressure belt driveSelected belt drive models with performance to above 9,200CFM to static pressures above 4".
As an integral part of a ventilation system layout, CentrexInliner fans can be installed either horizontally, vertically or atany angle determined by the duct work. Full-size removablepanels enable easy access to the fan interior. Direct-drive
motors are isolated from the airstream. Belt drive motors aremounted on the outside housing and can be positioned atany angle to avoid existing building obstructions. Optionalmotor covers are available as belt guards.
Centrex Inliner fans feature durable galvanized steel construction (aluminum is optional for selected belt drivemodels), which works in conjunction with a patented wheeldesign and deeply spun inlets to provide smoother flowthrough the ventilator. The centrifugal wheels are aluminum,non-overloading, backwardly inclined, robotically welded, and dynamically balanced.
All models have been rigorously tested in our state-of-the-artR&D lab. PennBarry, is registered for AMCA Air and Soundtesting and qualified for the Underwriters’ Laboratory ClientTest Data Program.
Designed for easy maintenance accessibility, CentrexInliner fans accommodate a wide variety of motor types. All units are fully assembled and test run prior to shipping.Belt drive models are pre-set to the RPM specified.

Motor SelectionBoth direct drive and belt drive models are available with awide range of voltages and enclosures. (See Motor Selectionsection for a complete listing). Standard belt drive Open DripProof (ODP) ball bearing motors are selected using a conservative portion of the NEMA service factor. Standarddirect drive ODP motors have Class B insulation and internaloverload protection. Each size is carefully engineered tomatch the motor to the wheel capacity.
All belt drive motors are installed “outside” the fan housingand the drive train components are out of the airstream.Direct drive ODP motors are isolated from the airstream withremovable motor covers and forced cooled from the exterior,or provided as Totally Enclosed (TE).
Internal WiringAll models with ODP motors are wired to an appropriateexternal junction box. An appropriately sized disconnectswitch is available. The initial electrical connection does notrequire the removal of any access panels.
Sound PerformanceLowest AMCA licensed sound performance in the industry.Units deliver outstanding air performance with minimal noise.
Structural IntegrityCorner post structural members are joined at their corners byan aluminum extrusion and then firmly locked in place toform a rigid framework.
Unique Mounting Frame Unique “fully flush” mounting frame allows installers to quickly fabricate “flanged” duct ends which can be easilysecured with common sheet metal hardware. The duct isconnected to a heavy-gauge corner post ensuring a sub-stantial wall for the fastener threads and a rigid base to holdthe shape of the ductwork.
Features & BenefitsCentrex Inliner
PENNBARRY4
Because of the rigid corner post construction of the Inliner, three of the four panels can be removed; only the top motormounting side is fixed. The removal of these panels is usual-ly for inspection and normal maintenance.
However there is another, and often overlooked, benefit tohaving this type construction. Any of these three panels, orall of them, can be removed and replaced by a duct connection. This option allows ducting directly out ofthe sides or bottom of the unit. This ducting arrangement:
• eliminates the static pressure duct loss throughduct fittings
• eliminates the cost of one or more field duct fittings (elbow or tee)
• is possible with no performance penalty
In some cases, just the space savings of transitioning directly from the unit can translate into a large savings byeliminating a lengthy “out of the way” run of duct.
A side discharge duct may either be the full panel size, orsmaller if desired. However, if not using a full panel, the ductopening must be installed at the inlet (wheel end) of the unitto avoid excessive “system effect” turbulence. In either case, the corner posts provide an effective surface for duct joints.
If this side ducting method is used, the typical straightthrough outlet may or may not be blocked, depending uponthe application.
Sizing using the unit as a transition is done the same way asif calculating the requirements of a duct only system.Basically, the total CFM of the system and the highest SP ofthe system dictate the selection. Air distribution can beimproved using these alternates, which may also simplify thesystem balancing process.

Three Removable Panels Both side panels are removable for inspection, periodicmaintenance, or optional discharge ducting. And, if requiredfor cramped close to-the-wall installations, once either sidepanel is removed, the bottom panel can then be removed.
Self-Aligning BearingsHeavy-duty bearings are sized for minimum L50 life inexcess of 200,000 hours of operation.100% factory tested, they are designed for air handling applications.
Drives and BeltsPulleys are pre-set to the specified RPM. Cast iron variablepitch pulleys are adjustable, allowing for field balancingbased on actual field conditions. All pulleys are sized for atleast 150% of the driven horsepower.
Aluminum WheelsCentrex Inliner fans offer patented wheel designs. Carefullymatched highly-tooled venturis enhance the performance ofthese backward inclined and non-overloading centrifugalwheels. Made of advanced aluminum alloys, the variouswheel components provide superior strength and durability,as well as spark resistant construction.
Silent Wheel (Direct Drive and SX100/120BC)• Blades’ highly curved leading edge provide unsurpassed
low sound numbers with excellent air performance.• Backplate and inlet are stamped for consistency,
plus dynamic balancing assure smooth vibration-freeoperation.
• Riveted or riveted and welded construction ensuresuperior dependability over other wheel designs.
Standard Duty, All Welded Wheel
(Standard Duty and High Pressure Belt Drive)• Blades are curved for improved air performance while
increasing their strength and rigidity.• Backplate and inlet are stamped for consistency. They
include a perimeter rim which enhances strength andimproves balancing.
• Wheel assembly is robotically welded to provideextremely durable and consistent performance.
• Wheel is dynamically balanced. Balancing weights aremechanically attached to both the backplate and wheelinlet. This allows a precise placement of the weightsanywhere within a full 360º range on two separateplanes, without the possibility of detachment.
Support AnglesShipped loose with every unit, these heavy-gauge anglesattach to two long corner posts. They can be used to installvibration isolator devices or to bolt the unit to a solid founda-tion.
Reverse VenturiReverse venturi reduces turbulence and improves distribu-tion of the air as it enters the wheel inlet and is “captured” bythe blades.

Motor SelectionCentrex Inliner
After choosing a fan model from the Direct Drive or Belt DrivePerformance Data sections, it is important to review themotor availability charts in this section before specifying elec-tric motors for your particular needs. Factors which influencethe selection process are discussed below.
Electric Power ConsiderationsFirst, determine the nature of the electric power feeding themotor. Is it single phase or three phase power? Next, deter-mine the required line voltage. Is it 115V, 230V, 460V? If yourHVAC application is in the U.S., the frequency of the alter-nating current will be 60 Hz. All of North America and most ofCentral and South America use 60 Hz as does Saudi Arabia. Most other countries in the world use 50 Hz.
Environmental ConsiderationsStandard motors supplied with fans are called Open DripProof (ODP) motors. Other types of motors may be requiredto meet specific field conditions; high temperature (50°C) orTotally Enclosed (TE) are two examples. Hazardous environ-ments require Explosion Proof motors. Standard ExplosionProof motors are rated for Class 1, Group D, Div. 1 and ClassII, Groups F and G, Div. 1 applications. Motors for otherclasses and groups may also be available. Please consultyour local PennBarry representative for information.
Fixed Speed Motor Control Two-speed motors, used in conjunction with external switch-es or sensors (gas concentration, odor, temperature), areused to quickly adjust the airflow through the ventilator bychanging from one fixed speed to another. Two speed motorsoperate at either 1800 & 1200 RPM (2 speed, 2 windings) or1800 & 900 RPM (2 speed, 1 winding). However, 2 speed, 1winding motors are available only in 3 phase power. A singleoperating voltage must be specified because dual-voltageversions are not available in a 2-speed motor.
Variable Speed Motor ControlPennBarry offers Lek-Trol™ solid state controllers to alter thehigh speed of most direct drive motors by as much as 50%.If variable speed is required, check the Lek-Trol availabilitytable on the following page to verify that controllers exist forthe fan model selected. Remember, Lek-Trol controllers arecurrently only available for direct drive motors. Motors suit-able for use with field supplied Frequency Inverters (variablespeed control) can be supplied for belt drive models. Contactyour local PennBarry representative.
High-Efficiency MotorsMotors that comply with the requirements of the EnergyPolicy Act of 1992 are available.
Notes:
Caution: Hazardous environments require that fans be built for such service. (Care must be taken regarding thelocation of these fans in the duct run and surrounding environment). All belt drive inline fans, regardless of manu-facturer, inherently leak. Additionally, the flat access panels supplied are not designed to provide air-tight service.Duct systems, except those fully welded, are not air-tight.
Direct Drive Motor AvailabilityThe following chart lists the various motor options available for each of the direct drive fan models. Once a fan model isselected, this chart can be used to determine if a suitable motor is available. (If not, another selection may have to be madefrom the fan performance charts). Look under the nominal RPM heading to determine which fans have 2-speed and 3-speedmotors. PennBarry’s electronic FanSizer will ensure accurate selections.

Lek-Trol™ Controller AvailabilityThe table above shows the availability of Lek-Trol controllersfor direct drive models. There is a controller available for allsize models. Not all totally enclosed motors are currentlyavailable with variable speed control.
Note: Lek-Trols indicated for multi-speed models are applicable only for thehigh speed. Do not use on low or medium speed for multi-speed models.
Belt Drive Motor AvailabilityThe chart below lists horsepowers, voltages, and enclosuretypes. After selecting a model and horsepower that meetsperformance requirements, an engineer can verify that thedesired voltage and enclosure are the same (or smaller) asthe maximum NEMA motor frame shown for each model (seeNEMA Motor Frame Size chart).
NEMA Motor Frame SizeThis chart summarizes the largest allowableNEMA frame sizes for motors used on beltdrive models.
On horsepowers less than 1 1/2, motor frame sizes may change due to variations in voltage, special features and motor manufacturer.

Performance DataCentrex Inliner
IntroductionCentrex Inliner direct drive models (except size 085) areavailable with single and multi-speed motors. Multi-speedmotors are designated V (1050 RPM), S (1300 RPM), andR (1550 RPM) (SX085R is an exception being a single speedmotor). Q, Q1, Q2 (1725/1760 RPM) are single speedmotors. A single Centrex Inliner fan may be suitable for several requirements by a simple wiring change. This featureprovides flexibility for a variety of reasons, including energysavings, future expansion or unexpected field variations.
By using Lek-Trol variable speed controllers, the high speedflow rate of most models can be reduced by as much as50%. Do not use on medium or low speed for multi-speedmodels.
When compared to belt drive models, Centrex Inliner directdrive fans require less maintenance, have a simpler construction, cost less, and are lighter in weight.
Centrex Inliner direct drive models are available in three sizes (085, 095, 115). Capacities range from below 500CFM to over 2750 CFM, with static pressures from 0" toabove 1 1/2".
Performances in 50 Hz applications will be less than shownbelow; consult with local PennBarry representative.

FAN CURVESThe fan curves illustrated here show the range of capacitiesavailable for direct drive units. Each graph shows the perfor-mance of several models at one particular nominal speed.Fan curves provide a quick method for selection a fan unitbased on design point requirements.
The direct drive performance chart on the previous page pro-vides the tabular data (CFM and static pressure) used to plotthe fan curves. In addition, horsepower, tip speed and sonesare tabulated. Since sound is normally an important factor inthe selection of a fan, and engineer will usually want to selectthe “slowest” unit which meets CFM and SP requirements.

Performance DataCentrex Inliner
Performance DataThe eleven belt drive models shown on the following pageshave sizes and capacities ranging from below 400 CFM toabove 27,000 CFM, with static pressures from 0" to above4". All models are available in up to eight different horse-power sizes with a wide range of RPM. Two-speed motorsare commonly used to increase this flexibility.
The data provided for each belt drive model includes:• Performance chart • Fan curve graph• Elevation drawing showing overall dimensions
Each curve graphically displays the range of capacities avail-able for each model, in most cases beyond the specificsshown in the tabular data. The maximum performance afford-ed by each horsepower is indicated by dashed lines and theRPM is indicated by solid lines.
Some models have graphs that show both shaded andunshaded areas. Selection should be made from theunshaded area only. Shaded areas reflect unstable perfor-mance (“surge”), a characteristic typical of backwardlyinclined wheels, and should be avoided. These unstableregions are not shown in the tabular data.
The highest RPM shown for a specific horsepower in the tabular data is the maximum speed that for any point alongthe performance curve, the BHP will not exceed the availablehorsepower.
It is important to note that while it is common industry-widepractice to exceed a “nominal” horsepower by using amotor’s service factor, PennBarry uses a conservative por-tion of the service factor, allowing half to remain a true “safe-ty” factor. PennBarry’s software also factors an additionalallowance for belt drive losses into the BHP calculations toensure proper motor selection. This allowance is currentlythe most conservative in the industry.
Use the Motor Availability chart (see Motor Selection section)to select motor enclosures and voltages which can beinstalled in the fans.
Note: Centrex Inliner fans are only one component of a total system. As such, performance is directly affected by the system. It is critical that systemdesigners determine actual system losses to ensure that the actual flow isspecified in the system range.
Belt Drive LossesThe air performance tables shown in this catalog do includedrive losses. When comparing the data found in our charts todata that does not include drive losses, the chart below willhelp estimate our equivalent brake horsepower (BHP).
The AMCA Review Committee has developed the chartshown below for the purpose of estimating belt drive losses. To calculate total BHP (including drive losses): Find the BHPof your operating point on the x-axis on the graph below.Follow the vertical line to the lines indicating the range ofdrive losses. Look at the y-axis on the left and find the driveloss percentage. Calculate the total BHP by adding the driveloss to the operating point BHP. For BHP’s below 0.3, use30%.
Caution: For totally enclosed, explosion proof, multi-speedand all 1.0 Service Factor motors, fan BHP plus drive lossesshould not exceed motor rated HP.
Note: FanSizer software incorporates a drive loss allowance when selectinga required nominal horsepower.

SOUND POWER LEVELSSince any mechanical device generates some sound energyinto the air, fans will create some noise. Because of the greatnumber of factors influencing sound output it is invalid tocompare fans based on RPM, tip speed or outlet velocity. The only accurate basis of comparison is the sound powerlevel generated by the fan at the required point of operation.
Having sound power levels for a specific fan at a specificoperating point allows the system designer to determine thetheoretical sound pressure level at any point in the occupiedspace. AMCA Publication 303 and the ASHRAE Guides pro-vide more information on this process. Another typical appli-cation of sound power levels is to compare similar fans.Generally differences of 6 dB in the 63 Hz band and 3 dB inall other bands are considered insignificant.
System designers use many methods to predict acousticacceptability of an occupied space.
The A-weighted sound pressure level provides a single num-ber that corresponds well to the human judgement of relativeloudness. OSHA bases their requirements regarding expo-sure to noise on A-weighted sound pressure levels. The dis-advantage of this method is that A-weighted sound pressurelevels do not provide information as to the quality of thesound. Noise Criteria (NC) curves are also widely used. Todetermine the NC level, the sound power spectrum is com-pared to defined limits. Other methods include RC curves,Sones, SIL and Noise Rating Curves.
Each method relies on sound pressure level informationbecause the human ear “hears” sound pressure fluctuations, not sound power (watts). Sound pressure is a function of the
attenuation of the space and the distance from the source.Consider a 100 watt light bulb. It provides adequate light fora closet, but not for a classroom, and in a stadium it wouldbe imperceptible. While the light source was the same power(100 watts), the brightness level changed dramatically.Similarly, the same sound power level (acoustical energy)produces greatly different sound pressure levels (noise).
Sone RatingsPennBarry has provided sone ratings to allow designers tomake an educated judgment as to the noise level a fan willdevelop in a space. Sone ratings are a loudness indexdeveloped from sound power level data. The calculation is at5’ from the fan inlet and in front of a reflecting plane (hardwall). Sones are weighted similarly to the A-weighting scalein that more weight is given to frequencies that people canhear “well” and less weight to frequencies that people do nothear “well”. A significant feature of the sone scale is that it islinear rather than logarithmic. This means that 40 sones is33% louder than 30 sones, as opposed to 40 dB being twiceas loud as 30 dB.
Since the sone rating is determined from well definedassumptions and is linear in nature, it is ideal for comparingdifferent fans moving air at the same CFM and SP. Whenusing sones for this purpose, differences of 3 sones are con-sidered negligible. The suggested loudness level chartbelow is a practical guideline for acceptable installed perfor-mance.
The sone values shown in this catalog are based on thesound power levels determined above, and calculated inaccordance with AMCA Standard 301 “Methods forCalculating Fan Sound Ratings from Laboratory Test Data.”

Application
Centrex Inliner fans are widely used as clean air boosters inboth supply and exhaust systems where the installation of con-ventional blowers is impractical. Their compact design givesdesigners an excellent alternative to conventional blowers.
Fan LawsThe following section includes engineering and technicaldata, guidelines and system explanations related to air mov-ing and control devices. Fan laws and system descriptionsare consistent with industry standards, definitions andaccepted practices. This information is provided to assist sys-tem designers in sizing, selecting and defining their air mov-ing and control systems as well as explaining variables inher-ent in system design.
There are nine fan laws, three are of prime importance to theunderstanding of ventilation systems. These, together with anappreciation of fan types, should help avoid most problemswith poor airflow performance. These three laws assume thesame fan operating with air at a constant density.
1. Airflow and fan speed are directly proportional.
CFM1 is the original flow rate in cu. ft. per minute.CFM2 is the desired flow rate in cu. ft. per minute.RPM1 is the original rotational speed of the fan.RPM2 is the desired rotational speed of the fan.
2. Pressure varies as the square of the fan speed or airflow.
P1 is the original static pressure.P2 is the desired static pressure.
3. Power varies as the cube of fan speed.
BHP1 is the original brake horsepowerBHP2 is the desired brake horsepower
Interaction of Fan Curves & System CurvesA ventilation system using a Centrex Inliner may consist of afan with duct connected to the inlet side. Control dampers, grilles, registers and duct fittings may also be part of the sys-tem. The fan is the component in the system which providesenergy to the airstream to overcome the resistance to flow offthe other components. The determination of the “pressureloss” or “resistance to flow”, for the individual components canbe obtained from the component manufacturers. The determi-nation of pressure losses for ductwork and branch ductworkdesign is well documented in standard handbooks, such asthe ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals. The fan curveshown in Figure 1 is a typical fan performance curve, devel-oped through the actual testing of a fan in an air tunnel. Thefan is run at constant speed and constant air density. Whenthe fan is installed in the field, then it becomes part of the sys-tem. System curves are developed by using field tested dataand applying fan laws. The point of intersection of the systemcurve and the fan performance curve determines the actualflow volume. If the system resistance has been accuratelydetermined, and the fan properly selected, the performancecurves will intersect at the system design point (point A).

If the system resistance has been underestimated, then fancurves and system curves will not intersect at the systemdesign point. They will intersect at lower CFM (point B). If thesystem resistance has been overestimated, then the fancurve system curve will intersect at a higher CFM than thesystem design point (point C) (see Figure 1).
Effect of Change in Density, Altitude and Temperature Correction FactorsThe resistance of a duct system is dependent upon the den-sity of the gas flowing through the system. A gas density of0.075 lb/ft3 is standard in the fan industry.
Pressure and horsepower vary directly as the ratio of the gasdensity at the fan inlet to standard density. This density ratiomust always be considered when selecting fans. To select afan, pressure should be corrected to standard air density,0.075 lb/ft3, 70º F. at sea level. Static pressure at operatingcondition x correction factor=static pressure at standard.Refer to Table 1.
Table 1 Correction FactorsUnity Basis = Standard Air Density of 0.075 lb/ft3
At sea level (29.92 in. Hg barometric pressure)this is equivalent to dry air at 70° F.
Horsepower at standard ÷ correction factor = horsepower atoperating condition. Motors should be sized for highest den-sity conditions at which it is expected to operate.
Inlet System EffectFor roof mounted exhaust fans, the most common installa-tion problem is ductwork connection to the inlet side of thefan. Here are several design criteria for connecting ductworkto the fan. Keep a straight duct run twice the diameter of theinlet size immediately before the inlet of the fan. This will givethe air a chance to straighten out before entering the fan. Faninlet swirl and non-uniform inlet flow can often be correctedby inlet straightening vanes or guide vanes. Restricted faninlets located too close to walls, obstructions or restrictionscaused by a plenum or cabinet, will decrease the useableperformance of a fan. Cabinet clearance effect or plenumeffect must be considered a component part of the entire sys-tem; the pressure losses through the cabinet or plenumeffect is considered as a System Effect when determiningsystem characteristics. The backdraft damper is part ofexternal static pressure, and should be accounted for when
estimating system static pressure. Use a motorized backdraftdamper when the fan has a variable speed controller.
System EffectA System Effect Factor is a pressure loss which recognizesthe effect of fan inlet restrictions, fan outlet restrictions orother conditions influencing fan performance when installedin the system. Figure 2 illustrates deficient fan/system performance resulting from one or more undesirable flowconditions. It is assumed that the system pressure losses, shown in system curve A, have been accurately determined, and a suitable fan selected for operation at Point 1. However,no allowance has been made for the effect of the systemconnections on the fan’s performance. To compensate forthis System Effect, it will be necessary to add a SystemEffect Factor (SEF) to the calculated system pressure lossesto determine the actual system curve. The SEF for any givenconfiguration is velocity dependent and will, therefore, varyacross the range of flow volumes for the fan.
In Figure 2, the point of intersection between the fan perfor-mance curve and the actual system curve B is Point 4. Theactual flow volume will, therefore, be deficient by the differ-ence from 1-4. To achieve design flow volume, an SEF equalto the pressure difference between Point 1 and 2 shouldhave been added to the calculated system pressure lossesand the fan selected to operate at Point 2. Note that becausethe System Effect is velocity related, the difference repre-sented between Points 1 and 2 is greater than the differencebetween Points 3 and 4.
The SEF includes only the effect of the system configuration on the fan’s performance.

Inlet Duct ElbowsNon-uniform flow into a fan inlet is the most common causeof deficient fan performance. An elbow located at, or in closeproximity to the fan inlet will not allow the air to enter theimpeller uniformly. The result is less than cataloged air per-formance. (See Figure 3).
Inlet Vortex (Spin or Swirl)Another major cause of reduced performance is an inlet ductcondition that produces a vortex or spin in the airstreamentering a fan inlet.
The ideal inlet condition is one which allows the air to enter axi-ally and uniformly without spin in either direction. A spin in thesame direction as the impeller rotation (pre-rotation) reducesthe pressure volume curve by an amount dependent upon theintensity of the vortex. The effect is similar to the change in thepressure volume curve achieved by inlet vanes installed in afan inlet; the vanes induce a controlled spin in the direction ofimpeller rotation reducing the volume flow rate.
A counter-rotating vortex at the inlet may result in a slightincrease in the pressure-volume curve but the horsepowerwill increase substantially.
Inlet Turning VanesWhere space limitations prevent the use of optimum fan inletconnections, more uniform flow can be achieved by the use of turning vanes in the inlet elbow (see Figure 4).
Numerous variations ofturning vanes are avail-able from a single curvedsheet metal vane to multi-bladed “airfoil” vanes. Thepressure drop throughthese devices must beadded to the system pressure losses.
Spark Resistant ConstructionAMCA standards offer the following definitions and notesconcerning spark resistant construction:
C - The fan shall be so constructed that a shift in theimpeller or shaft will not permit two ferrous parts ofthe fan to rub or strike.
B - The fan shall have a non-ferrous impeller andnon-ferrous ring about the opening through which theshaft passes. Ferrous hubs, shafts and hardware areallowed, provided construction is such that a shift inimpeller or shaft will not permit two ferrous parts ofthe fan to rub or strike. Steps must also be taken toinsure that the impeller, bearings, and shaft are adequately attached and/or restrained to prevent alateral or axial shift in these components.
AMCA “B” construction is an option.
Notes:
1. No bearings, drive components or electrical components shall be placed inthe air or gas stream unless they are constructed or enclosed in such amanner that failure of the component cannot ignite the surrounding gasstream.
2. The user shall electrically ground on all fan parts.3. For this standard, non-ferrous shall be any material with less than 5% iron
or any other material with demonstrated ability to be spark resistant.4. The use of aluminum or aluminum alloys in the presence of steel which
has been allowed to rust requires special consideration. Research by theU.S. Bureau of Mines and others has shown that aluminum impellers rub-bing on rusty steel may cause high-intensity sparking.
The use of the above standard in no way implies a guaran-tee of safety for any level of spark resistance. Spark resistantconstruction does not protect against ignition of explosivegases caused by catastrophic failure or from any airstreammaterial that may be present in a system.
