    A successful refurbishment and extentension of an 80s office building in to contemporary headquarters of a leading central european software developer. The 20 000 sq m office buiding comprises of highly flexible accomodation allowing frequent project re-grouping. Due to the nature of the work, security was top priority eachieved through applying access control and monitoring. The vast back-up equipment stored called for poly carbon reinforc-ing of existing concrete slabs. The new atrium, glazed mid section and cladding elements have been specified to highest standards underlining the companys prestige. The building achieved A class rating and is monitored through its BMS system.

    Mental Health Unit, Muckamore Abbey Hospital.The 35 bed Admissions and Assessment unit and 23 bed Forensic unit are the first of five phases of dvelopment planned at Muck-amore Abbey Hospital. This development is isn response to the national requirement to scale down inpatient facilities and provide adequate facilities to enable patients to return to the community comfortably. The plan form of the Assessment Unit was derived from the clinicians and the design teams aspiration to integrate the build-ing into the landscape and focus patient activities therapeutic land-scaped areas and a circle of trees, known as the Fairy Ring exist-ing on the site. The unit is unuasual in providing male, female and intensive care wards all in one building. The design allows social interaction between sexes, crucial for enhancing patients resettlement into the

    The central social space with free-flowing oak partitions and external windows is centred between four themed gardens which have varying degrees of secu-rity. The materials and themes of these gardens has also been employed in the interior design concept to allow a seamless flow of the patient journey from the external therapeutic classes right through to the private spaces of the bed-rooms and quiet rooms in the rear of the building.The elevational chosen were carefully selected to provide empathy between the old and new buildings on the site, alleviating the existing institutional im-age of Muckamore Abbey Hospital. Roof of zinc and slate tiles incorporate roof glazing to allow, ventilation and delight to the corridors of the wards. Random rubble walls help to root the buildings to the landscape and form an important element to the building, together with brick and render.The Forensic Unit is geared at assessing the needs of male juveniles, and then housing them in an environment which will provide secure accomodation and premises for learning life skills and other educational needs.     This development comprises of a residential unit for 16 young people with additional facilities providing education, tharapy and administration support.The unit provides residential care for children, boys and girls of 11-17 years old, whom are at high risk, have experienced trauma that require their liberty to be restricted.The initial impression when approaching the fa-cility is non-institutional and avoid the enclosed feel usually associated with this type of facility. This is achieved with a sweeping front facade, domestic in scale, with a glazed entrance providing improved eye contact and light/airy entrance flooded with natural light. The planning of the facility developed alongside detailed discussions with the Client and User group to carefully respond to their complicated operational procedures. The plan is based around a Quad which is both a circulation space and usable garden for therapeutic activi-ties.

    The state-of-the-art research facility replaces two buildings on a brownfield site to cre-ate a new gateway to Oxford Universitys Old Road Campus.Ensuring flexibility for future extension, the footprint of the building is maximised and successfully integrated into a compact site with existing buildings and landscaping. Bridges, open courtyards and a central enclosed courtyard break up the mass of the building, introducing natural light and views deep into the heart of the building. The 14,000m2 building is three storeys above ground, with a partial basement that accomodates a slope across the site. The accomodation comprises flexible laboratory and office space, with communal facilities facing onto two principle social areas in much the same way that a traditional University college building overlooks the quad at its heart. The main and secondaty entrances are linked by a street which draws a pedestrian route through the structure.Especially designed facade cladding modules continue the philosophy of incorporating the building into the landscape, creating a dynamic ribbon signifying the main gateway into the campus. Solid panels are coloured in a spectrum of greens to harmonise with a band of mature planting around the perimeter of the site.Having considered the important functional, financial and technical requirements, the project team have developed an exciting design for a flagship building, a world class research institution that will be of a highly adaptable, flexible and of sustainable construc-tion. It will incorporate new developments in laboratory design, where circulation areas are seen as important communal spaces that encourage interaction between research-ers.
