Welcome to 13 days of JOMBA!JOMBA! Is a unique contemporary dance festival in that it sits squarely within the Centre for Creative Arts and the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s vision of a centre of excellence in arts that supports, first and foremost, the university community. Various workshops, guest classes, free studenttickets and the acclaimed JOMBA! Writing Residency (and the accompanying blog JOMBA! KHULUMA) all support the growth of dance within the arts and humanities vision of UKZN. By supporting the growth and development in the arts within a space of teaching and learning like UKZN, the CCA and JOMBA! also embrace its wider community which is its city and its province. Our biggest and most consistent funding partner, for 21 years of JOMBA!, is the City of eThekwini. As such our mandate grows to support the development of Durban and KZN based dancers and choreographers and this is done by variousperformance grants to local artists, and the creation, within JOMBA!, of various platforms that support KZN artists; platforms like KZN ON THE EDGE, the JOMBA! Fringe and the JOMBA! Youth Fringe.

Beyond this, the curatorial vision for JOMBA! is four-fold:1. To create a platform to showcase the excellence of Durban based dancers and choreographers, and to offer space for supporting the onwardtraining and development for Durban dancers and choreographers through a series of JOMBA! based workshops, masterclasses and residencies. 2. To invite current South African dance theater works that are breaking boundaries, causing controversy, and offering performance excellence. 3. To create a space in both contemporary performance and in residencies/workshops/collaborations to connect Durban and South Africa to ourAfrican continent, making JOMBA! a platform that consistently supports African dance works of excellence.4. To link Durban dancers and audiences, via the JOMBA! platform, to international dancers, choreographers and dance companies that arecutting edge, innovative and inventive. This includes dance companies and choreographers from, amongst other global spaces, USA, Europe andmore recently, India.

I invite you to sit back and enjoy another overflowing edition of JOMBA! and to celebrate the incredible power of the contemporarydancing, moving body to speak truth to power!

Jazzart Dance Theatre continues to do what it does best - challenging the dance status quo and social stereotypes,by breaking barriers, defying gravity and embracing and celebrating the curves of African bodies. Since its inception in1973, Jazzart Dance Theatre has held sacred, it’s deep responsibility to tell the stories of South Africans. It has been at theforefront of contemporary dance development by serving all communities without prejudice or bias and continues its social responsibility through its training and outreach programs servicing marginalised communities.

Heritage? Economy? Legacy? Ancestral land is far more than a few grains of sand.It holds a profound spiritual connection to the earth for many and marks the place where forefathers were laid to rest.

As an artist oneconstantly sharpens and deepens one’s understanding of who we are as performers by being vulnerable andopen; our joy, sorrow, pain and pleasure, juxtaposed with the discipline and self-reflection is necessary to createan artist and embrace the landscape of our lives - this is ‘limitless self ’.

Boyzie Cekwana and Danya Hammoud(South Africa and Lebanon)“Bootlegged”In the American Midwest of the 1880s, white men would conceal bottles of illicit alcohol in boottops when going to trade with Native Americans (an effective strategy of neutralizing recalcitrantNatives by intoxication). Bootlegging then, was born. With the advent of the Prohibition, in the 1920s, theterm got inducted into the American vocabulary. In effect, the term denotes ‘smuggling’. This is an invitation to witness a process of multiplying the angles of a critical encounter between two bodies, two stories and two histories. Each emanating from a continent, colliding in a third one. Formed by troubleand wrinkled by time, our bodies bend and contort in order to slip through borders. In an attempt to unfold one to the other, tensions are revealed, vulnerabilities exposed and transcended, perhaps.New wrinkles will start to appear, this time through the presence and complicity of twobodies, standing up, standing for, standing with or standing behind each other.

JOMBA! 2019 is proud to be presenting its second year of collaboration with theDurban Art Gallery in a magnificent dance theatre and film event that is one of JOMBA’s ‘free events”.

·“SOUTH-SOUTH: Dance on Screen”Curated by Sofía Castro (Argentina)The young dancers and creators in these 5 short cinematic dance films, come from different corners withinArgentina, and make a revolutionary statement against traditional audiovisual forms of "fiction", "documentary" and "experimental"cinema to depict dance that jumps off the stage and into the streets, taking the spaces they inhabit as their own through their moving manifestos.

1.PATH OF EXPLORATIONDirection: Chama - 2:18A professional dancer questions his role in a ballet company while searching for truer art forms that allow him to contribute deeper as an artistto the dance world.

2. MAIDSDirection: Sofía Castro - 5:07Inspired by Augusto Monterroso’s “Maids”, this short film combining fiction and screendance presents a maid ballerina embodying the voices oftwo stock radio drama lovers who plan to murder her with their own hands.

3.LADO ADirection: Alejandrina Groisman - 6:42Two instruments (body and drums) execute a mimetic unit to play with the confusion of the origin of sound and movement, in order to plungethe body into a state of madness.

4.LOS LOCOS NO SE OCULTAN (“crazy people do not hide”)Direction: Francisco Bouzas - 8:57A young percussionist and dancer travel the neighbourhood promoting themselves and the carnival – their goal toshift the negative image of the slums …

5.BAILABILONIADirections: Silvina Estévez - 26:57Here the music, the movement of the body, and that of the camera are intertwined until they merge to re-think therelationship of body to space. A free body runs through and old 1912 library ..

• hymn + them (New Orleans, USA) Choreographer and Director: Leslie Scott - BODYART Performers: Rachel Abrahams + Jonathan Bryant Costumes, Set and Lighting: Hannah Lax

Anybody who has swallowed the Wizard of Oz's scriptwriters notion thatthis is a work about the superiority of “home” over “away,” that the “moral”of Oz is as sickly-sweet “East, West, home’s best”—would do well to listen tothe yearning in Judy Garland’s voice as her face tilts up toward the skies. What she embodies with the purity of an archetype, is the human dream ofleaving. hymn + them is about the joys of going away, of leaving the graynessand entering the color. Over the Rainbow is, or ought to be, the anthem of allthe world’s migrants, all those who go in search of the place where the dreamsreally do come true. “It is a celebration of Escape, a grand paean to theuprooted self, a hymn—the hymn—to Elsewhere” (Salman Rushdie).

BODYART is a New Orleans-based multimedia dance and visual art companythat combines live performances and projected videos in non-traditional spaces. With a mission of public accessibility, the Company works to produce artworkin community spaces across the USA. BODYART regularly collaborates withcomposers, video artists, set/fashion/lighting designers, poets, and theater artists. This “creative community” approach to creation is at the core of our mission.

Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company(Washington, USA)

Founded in 2003, Dakshina/Daniel Phoenix Singh Dance Company is one of the leading dancecompanies in Washington. Dakshina means “offering” in Sanskrit and in keeping with this spirit,Dakshina offers artists and communities the unique opportunity to experience dance as amovement that links the arts, cultures, and social causes. In recent years, Dakshina has examined the connections between Indian, social, and moderndance forms; brought dance out of the auditorium and into schools and community centers.Singh works in a broad palette of styles ranging from Bharata Natyam, modern dance and asyncretic hybrid of the two forms. Daniel Phoenix Singh is the Founding Artistic Director.

In this work Singhcombines his love of Modern Dance and Bharata Natyam to create movement that is built on groupdynamics and use of space while layering in the fine filigreed detail of hand gestures, rhythmicvariations, and facial mime that Indian dance is known for”.

He has always been drawn to the drama and the lushness in Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, and it was rejuvenating for him and the dancers to choreograph a dance that celebrates thecycle of life in all its aspects.

“A mother; born first, lives, succeeds and fails through what she expected her life to be, what shelived her life to be, what she dreamt her life to be. In her daughter she sees a second chance, a secondattempt to rectify all wrongs and a war plan where she will be the victor over all her battles. However, thedaughter is not a docile body - she has her own autonomy, her life and her vision. She constantlyand persistently refers to her mother and stands tall on the foundation her mother built. Should adaughter's life be a replication and repetition of a mother's life? “

• “On the Margin I …” Choreography by Sizwe Hlophe in collaboration with Mzamo KuneneCostume: Derrick MhlongoDesign: Sizwe Hlophe and Mzamo Kunene

The dance work follows the journey of two men trying to find meaning on thefringes of society. When people recognise the other as not being able to fit in because of beliefs, status, class, gender and race, they are considered strange or extreme. In this dance work wefollow two black men faced with the chaos of society and we journey into looking at howthis alienation allows these ‘misfits’ to negotiate interacting with each other.

Sizwe Hlophe, though currently based in Johannesburg, is from Port Shepstone and Empendle. He is currently reading for his MA: Theater and Performance at the University of the Witwatersrand. He completed his BA (Hons) in Drama & Performance Studies in 2018 and completed his BA in Psychology, and Drama & Performance Studies in 2017 (both degrees from the University of KwaZulu-Natal).In 2014 he joined Jay Pather’s Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre dance training program. In his Dance career he has also worked with Musa Hlatswayo,Mlondolozi Zondi, Mandisa Haarhof, JC Zondi and Zenzelisphesihle ‘Sparky’ Xulu.

FANA TSHABALALAwith FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANY• “MAN”Choreographed and danced by Fana TshabalalaMusic composer/musician: Thulani Chauke and Fana TshabalalaCostume: Fana TshabalalaLighting and set designer: Alexandra and Mandla MtshaliThe work is inspired by the ideal kind of a “Man“within the society and howthe roles and responsibilities has changed throughout years, leaving manin a state of bewilderment. A “Man” in a society is expected to be brave andindustrious and if this not archived most ‘Men’ end up losing their image and ego.But a new type of “Man” is emerging - gentle, sensitive, caring, a“Man“ not afraid of giving vent to his feelings.

"... just want to make enough so that we don’t sleep on an empty stomach..."by various street vendors!

The work explores the journey of women and men who wake up every day to sell in the streets to provide for themselves and the loved ones; they choose not to sit at home and hope for better without doing anything. In most cases those street vendors tend to be very close to the passer buys and people also tend to be very open to them share their daily problems and success, they don’t just become entrepreneurs but they also become the pillars of the society.

About FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANYFLATFOOT began as a contemporary dance training programme by Lliane Loots in 1994 in an attempt to challenge the historical lack of spaces to train specifically young contemporary dancers in Durban (KZN). In 2003 it became a professional dance company and began its now 16-year meteoric life to become one of South Africa’s leading contemporary dance companies. FLATFOOT has an international reputation for itsinnovative dance education and community engagement programmes (run in both rural and urban KZN) where they fosters an understanding in dance as a tool for self-development and living democracy.

An abstract journey of a traveler: A quest to an Emperor’s elegant path to oblivion, behold! the Birds taking flight,Lions prey, howling dogs in the distance, winds, and dust raises to a silent storm.A slavish imitation of a great monk’s journey, conversing the narratives on the pathto a roaring, hissing torrent of oblivion.Naked trees stripped by roaring sheets of hail, march on!!Foot Forward…….A permanent attitude behind changing expressions in thought and action, precious veils being saturated with one foot forward to uncertain note, true in aim, sentiment and sacred conscientious, behold the inevitable and unvarying oblivion. March; breath; listen; see; speak to the patient waves of murmuring heat, sweat stinging eyes, stumbling foot forward, we never been to this path before, yet it seemed strangely familiar, Soliidad!!

“A Good traveller has no fixed plan, and is not intent on arriving”LAO TZU

Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe is considered to be one of the founding fathers of South African contemporary dance and now spends his time between France and South Arica teaching, choreographing and doing masterclasses. He performed at the first JOMBA! Festival in 1998 and it is with delight that on JOMBA!’s 21st anniversary we host the world premiere of his latest solo.
